So after months of searching for and calling and visiting countless apartments, we have a place in downtown Burbank and are scheduled to move in at the end of this month. We were originally trying for the West Hollywood area, but after experiencing immeasurable amounts of bullshit (ie: price gouging, lies, dragging their feet, etc.) from various landlords and apartment companies over there, we decided to move to the downtown Burbank area instead. You get a lot more bang for your buck there, it's cleaner than WeHo, the view of the mountains is incredible, I haven't found myself wanting to destroy everybody there (as opposed to the Hummer/Ferrari driving braggarts I constantly see on Sunset Blvd) and frankly, I don't even need a car where I'm gonna be living. Within less than a mile of where I'm gonna be, the following places can be found:
· A comic shop (haven't been there yet, but here's to hoping it's a good one)
· A movie theater (hooray movies!)
· A mall (not that it would normally matter, but they actually have a pretty good arcade)
· A huge IKEA store (and we all love IKEA, right Fight Club fans?)
· A variety of martial arts studios (been wanting to get back into it since I stopped right when we moved out here)
· A boxing gym (in case I decide that having a dentist pull my teeth is an act of cowardice when I could have them knocked out)
· Trader Joe's (healthy groceries)
· Candy Shop (unhealthy groceries)
· Ice Cream Shop (more unhealthy groceries)
· Book/Magazine shop (really cool little place that sells all sorts of old used books and magazines)
· One of the few good pizza joints I've been to so far in CA plus a bunch of other restaurants
· Circuit City (too bad I don't get that employee discount anymore. oh wait, the employee discount was a farce)
· Hollywood Video (for when I don't feel like watching one of the many neglected, unwatched movies that I already own on DVD)
· Cartoon Network (maybe I'll force my way into their office building and demand they give us a PickleMan cartoon)
And that's just what I've seen so far. Anybody know of other cool stuff in downtown Burbank that I've yet to discover?
But the real reason I'm moving to Burbank is because I thought our own Max Burbank lived here. Guess I should get to know the few other people who write I-Mockery a little better, eh? So yeah, I'm excited that we'll have a place to officially call home here in CA (well at least for a while) and I can finally get all my shit out of storage. Plus, Re will have an easier commute now which is always a good thing.
Now while I don't need a car in Burbank, I am thinking about getting some additional transportation. We have the one car right now, sure, but I don't always have it during the day. So, there are a few options I'm thinking of. One would be a motorized scooter (like a Go-Ped), another would be an electronic skateboard (which is consequently made by a small company right here in nearby Santa Monica), and of course a bike of some sort is always an option. So which one would you go with if you were in my position? Or am I forgetting some other fun means of personal transportation?
By the way, go check out Max and Proto's collaboration on their newest comic article if you haven't already!

Comic shop...
Would that be RVD's 5 Star Comics?
Jeff The Ninja (Guest) on 08/08/2006 3:01 am
I hate to ask this, but where are you working now that you are living in California. I take it the initial move cost tons and the apartment cant be cheap.
Anyways, congrats on finding a good place to move into. My neighbour hood has only one thing good going for it and its because we are right near the Fair Grounds. Other than that its crap. No malls, no arcades, no fun. Atleast I got to see GWAR today.
Fiona (Guest) on 08/08/2006 3:19 am
RoG, I'm afraid you've forgotten the most fuel-efficent and equally bitchin' transportation on the market:
POW-POW-POWER WHEELS!
(PS, congrats on the new housing!)
-RoG- (Guest) on 08/08/2006 11:25 am
Jesse, hrm no I don't think that's the place. This one is right in downtown Burbank, on a side street just off of San Fernando Blvd.
Jeff, thanks for the congrats. I currently work on I-Mockery full-time, but sometimes I do freelance pieces. That's not to say I'd be opposed to writing for another company as well, it'd just depend on what kind of schedule they'd need me to keep.
Fiona, haha come now, surely you know that I wouldn't go with that Power Wheels jeep when I could go with The Green Machine!

Kisla (Guest) on 08/08/2006 11:52 am
Psh. You silly people with your wheels. Ride in style.
matthew kaplowitz (Guest) on 08/08/2006 12:21 pm
congrats on finding a place to live. If you are looking for martial arts school, i am not sure if they are in the area but you should look for bas ruttens school (www.basrutten.tv), gene lebell has a school there and of course the gracie family has a school there too. I would go with Bas tho, a living legend.
allie (Guest) on 08/08/2006 2:32 pm
Yeah I'm totally for the whole getting cartoon network to play a pickleman cartoon.
haha :]
Well.. atleast I think it's a good idea.
Max Burbank (Guest) on 08/08/2006 2:41 pm
Heh heh... You and Doopa are living in me. 'In' me. Heh. Heh heh heh.
Flamehead6544 (vinny) (Guest) on 08/08/2006 3:00 pm
Well, if you want regulat modes of transport, Rollerskates, Rollerblades, and Heelies are all viable forms of transport. And if those are too normal for you, just get a Big Wheel (http://www.retropedalcars.com/images/Marx-Big-Wheel.jpg)
Jesse B (Guest) on 08/08/2006 4:59 pm
Telling me where it is won't help me, as I am 356 miles away here in Alameda, CA. (You could have moved here... **sob**)
Anyway, I just found out the RVD's 5 Star Comics is in Lomita.
Knighthawk (Guest) on 08/08/2006 5:25 pm
Congrats on finding a place! That's unfortunately all I have to say. Yay for pointless comments?
Smon (Guest) on 08/08/2006 6:12 pm
Cartoon Network? I think Nicktoons studios is there too... so all else fails you could pitch something to them too.
vctreality (Guest) on 08/08/2006 7:11 pm
Pogo ball. Giant madball. Migo brain cannister. Falkor. Just to name a few.
ColdFusion (Guest) on 08/08/2006 10:27 pm
Whatever you get, car, board, or pogo stick, you MUST christen it (with custom decals) the Picklemobile.
larry the crime donkey (Guest) on 08/09/2006 12:42 am
the best way to save money and get around is to simply, Ride the handicapped!
-RoG- (Guest) on 08/09/2006 12:58 am
Matthew Kaplowitz, haha yeah I've seen Bas Ruten before, he's a funny/crazy man.
Max, and it's not the first time we've been there either, now has it? Har har!
ColdFusion, but of course, what good would my transportation be without plastering it with stickers gallore?
Thanks for the congrats all!
Shannon (Guest) on 08/09/2006 3:09 am
just wanted to let you know, i know you are a Gwar fan and they are playing the Universal Gibson Amphitheatre on August 12. they are part of a metal festival thats going on. also, remember that offer i told you about if you ever need a new car...
and one more question. does that book/magazine store near you sell old magazines too or just old books? i collect old Fangoria magazines so having another outletgrab issues would be great. and even though you are in Burbank now, there is an awesome place in Hollywood called Hollywood Book and Poster. how is coolis this place? lets just say i got a Nightmare on Elm St digital watch (original and unused) for under $10. they also run a monthly Grind House festival at the New Beverly theatre on Beverly Blvd. on aug 15 they are showing Mausoleum and Demons, 2 great 80s horror flicks, and they show old exploitation trailers in between the flicks and give stuff away.and its only $7. i went around xmas time and saw a doube feature of Black Christmas and Silent Night Deadly Night. if you like doing this kind of thing i can send you a whole list of crap like this hidden around the area.
James (Guest) on 08/09/2006 7:18 am
Mo-peds are quite good for transportation. you usually only have to fill them up once every two to three weeks, least that is the mileage mine gets.
So,definitely a scooter. Scooters are sexy
Dude (Guest) on 08/09/2006 8:52 am
Go-Peds and other forms of simple gas/electric transport are great, and what with all the hills in CA I could really see their advantage.
But if you've got the legs for it, a bike can be very rewarding. You only have to pay for it once, there's no gas or insurance, it will always start in the morning, and a bike will definitely cost less than these products (cool though they are).
Plus it gives you biker's legs, which ALL the ladies (and some of the guys) seem to like.
Steve (Guest) on 08/09/2006 10:03 am
If you shop at Trader Joe's and practice martial arts then a bicylce will be a perfect addition to your new healthy persona. My roomate has a nice lightweight bicyle and special shoes that let him pull up rather than just push down on the pedals, effectively giving him a better workout and a more efficient ride.
Fuck cars!
Sean (Guest) on 08/09/2006 11:44 am
You could always look like a total prick and get a segway.
And are you talking about the used bookstore just down the main street from the mall? If so, there are no magazines there, Shannon. But the guy who runs the place is KRAY-ZEE!!! OH NOES, LOOK AT THAT SPELLING!
Ninjawolf (Guest) on 08/09/2006 6:39 pm
Sean is right. I would kill to see a picture of you in the googles wearing the pickle hat on a segway.

Youve got to use one of those. Those things look awesome and are pretty fast. Me like.
Leonard X (Guest) on 08/10/2006 12:24 am
Hey Rog, name's Leonard been a fan of the site for years, any way I'm sure you get this crap all the time but if your at all intrested I live in reseda and my friends in Sherman Oaks so if your at all intrested in meeting (some) people who know thier way around drop me a note maybe we can chill sometime.
snowwhite (Guest) on 08/10/2006 12:25 pm
welcome to the neighborhood :)
Enjoy your martial arts and boxing. Should you decide you actually need a dentist, though, I have a great recommendation for one right in the area (around Glenoaks and Tujunga). There are also great shops in the area that sell of old movie props/memorabilia - interesting stuff.
If you're bored and need a weekday activity, the Westmore make-up academy is down the street from Ikea - they always (or at least always USED TO) need warm bodies to practice special effects make up on.
A bike is probably your best bet for non-gasoline transport... but bear in mind, in Los Angeles county once you get on a bike you're invisible... so be careful!
I'm just curious how could you have missed the Hooters right next to the movie theater...
-RoG- (Guest) on 08/10/2006 12:56 pm
Shannon, thanks for all the info, definitely send me that list of cool stuff in the area if you have the chance, I always like to know what stuff is going on in town. There's always so much, it seems like it's easy to overlook something really cool. And yeah, that place did have a bunch of old magazines, that's mainly what I looked at while I was there. I do think there were a bunch of Fangoria issues along with other horror-themed magazines. I'll find out the name of the place for you the next time I'm around there, but it must be different than the one Sean is talking about.
Dude/Steve, aye, I'm strongly considering a bike too, no doubt about it. It'd have to look exactly like Pee-Wee Herman's bike, but it'd be a bike no less.
Sean/Ninjawolf, haha I don't think I'm gonna blow 2k on a Segway anytime soon. It's funny how many people out here I've seen with them though. We went to Pasadena and all of the metermaids there were riding on Segways and giving people parking tickets. It was like being in bizarro world to say the least.
Leonard X, yeah a bunch o' people have asked to meet up since I moved out here. Maybe later in the year I'll have a big "West Coast Mock Meet" like we did back East a few years ago in NYC. I'll definitely keep it in mind, thanks!
snowwhite, heheh, unless they'd be paying me to sit there for hours while they put make-up on me or it was Halloween season, I'd probably pass on the Westmore thing. Thanks anyway though. The Glenoaks & Tujunga area definitely seemed to have some cool shops when I drove by there before, so I'll be sure to give it a closer look next time. Thanks for the tip! As for the Hooters near the movie theatre, yeah I noticed it, but it's simply not a place I give a rats ass about.
Chris Gray (Guest) on 08/10/2006 2:04 pm
I have it!! You should get a tank, that'll teach those rich show offs whos in charge. i can see it now. ^_^

ok i sent you 4 or 5 emails, but they are on myspace, so go check it out.
GreyFox (Guest) on 08/10/2006 6:38 pm
I thought that this was about Max Burbank. Oh well.
AngryHydralisk/Mohn-doh (Guest) on 08/11/2006 8:39 am
California sounds totally awesome, unlike Louisville here. Give it a couple years and I'll be calling it "My Old Kentucky Home" for a good reason.
Steve (Guest) on 08/16/2006 4:50 am
Shit man, I lived right in that area. You know the 7-11 on Glenoaks and Cypress (Cypress leads to the Mighty Land of Ikea)? Yeah. My apartment was right next to there.
Technically, my apartment is still there. But I'm in the process of moving this week to a new place in West Los Angeles. It's kind of a ghetto neighborhood (And I don't go throwing youthful slang about all willy-nilly, either), the apartment is expensive, but it's also really close to my work and it's a 2BR which means I don't have to sleep in a living room anymore.
Anyway, good luck with the move. And if you need any helpful tips about getting around Burbank, feel free to hit me up.
