If there's one classic game out there that most people have played all the way through more times than any other, it's gotta be Contra. It's simply one of the greatest 2-player cooperative games ever made. Yes, we all remember entering in the infamous code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start), and more importantly, stealing lives from our friends when we ran out. Hah, yeah "cooperative" gameplay my ass. For a game to have so much replay value, even 20 years later it's still just as fun as it was back in the day, is definitely rare.
Well, it turns out there's a new Contra 4 game coming out for the Nintendo DS and it appears to be a truly worthy sequel. Behold:
Tell me that doesn't look great. The new game has it all, including the spread gun that we all raced to grab before our partner reached it (complete with the original sound effects). It even has grappling hooks, and come on... who doesn't like to grapple things? Leggo my Eggo. Grapple my Apple.
Alright, now it's your turn. Share some of your favorite memories of Contra!
By the way, you can watch some footage of the new game after the cut.

Damn those robot monkeys!

I always remember the boss in the Jungle stage, nothing more than a huge metallic box bristling with guns and a giant red eye. One of my personal favorites when it comes to bosses.
I always stole my brothers medals when I died first, so I could get back into the game. I look back with shame upon my thieving ways.....even if it helped me win :) Thank goodness for those flying weapon drop off blimps!
Victor (Guest) on 06/30/2007 4:14 pm
its like...contra and bionic comando all in one!
Aks (Guest) on 06/30/2007 6:40 pm
Ive never played Contra but in Nintendo Power this month I saw stuff all about the new one and it makes me want to play the first. And yes, Nintendo Power is alive and kickin. Half of my friends are subscribed to it because we're all friggin awesome.
Do we haul serious ass in the ass-kicking department or what?
No. No we dont :(
monkeyZ (Guest) on 06/30/2007 8:25 pm
I loved playing Contra as a child but I always died alot......another good game to bring back would be Streetfighter 2015.....very difficult as a child but well worth the wait for the skill
TheChampionKnight (Guest) on 06/30/2007 10:06 pm
Damn, they HAD to get another game for the DS i would kill for... they just HAD!
Keith (Guest) on 06/30/2007 11:26 pm
Yeah, why doesn't Bionic Commando get more love? BC is no Contra but you're pscyho guy weighed himself down with a Bionic arm so heavy he can't jump or even step upwards. And I do believe the final boss was Hitler. That's awesome.

The first game I remember playing is Super C with my brother. Have you ever seen a 3 year old's face light up because he's blowing away baddies left and right? Me neither, but that's because I was too busy killing things to look in a mirror!
nathan (Guest) on 07/01/2007 2:55 am
my favorite part was the sound effects :D

I'm baffled why they brought Black Viper back from Operation Contra and threw in two Bill's and Lances (The Mad Dog and Scorpion characters were Bill and Lance's USA names back in the day) but yeah, the plot never really mattered in Contra anyways lol
Anyways, the memory:
Beating Contra: Hard Corps.
Anyone who can get through that game is a true "Contra".
Another could be seeing all the insane shit in Neo Contra on the first run through. Most people hated that game but I thought it was damn awesome. Running on top of helicopter blades? That's instant WIN.
Goatboy (Guest) on 07/01/2007 10:12 am
Contra...okay, folks, confession time. I SUCK at Contra. We're talking Megamaid levels of suck here, and I'd often go from suck to blow. Yay entendre!
Even with the 30 lives code I almost didn't make it.
So my keenest memory is of feeling ridiculed when I watched my childhood-best-friend beat the game without the Konami code.

Those basement levels kicked ass

If you guys liked Contra, you should check out Rendering Ranger R2 for the Super NES.

Contra is the reason that whenever I'm outside I always look for power-ups and surprise attacks.
FlameAdder (Guest) on 07/01/2007 10:09 pm
It's like the best parts of Contra and Alien Wars stacked on top of each other! Konami keeps making my DS worth it.
Spruce (Guest) on 07/01/2007 10:34 pm
The intro to Contra 3: The Alien Wars will always be my favorite moment of my favorite Contra game.
"It's time for revenge."
"Let's attack aggressively!"
For some reason, these two simple, blunt statements have always amused the hell out of me.
Honorable mention:
-When you pass by that creepy looking dog, and it rushes you. Barely into thte first level, and the game is already throwing out traps...
-When the whole city gets firebombed, also in the first level of Contra 3. The whole first level to Contra 3 in general was a pretty good way to let you know "This game is hardcore, no horseshit."

To this day whenever I finish something important I hear victory music in my head.
"Well that takes care of that project..... Da na na..na nu na nuh... na na na nuh.... da nah nuu naaaah!"
Sean (Guest) on 07/02/2007 1:13 am
RoG, this is 100% off topic, but: did I catch you at the Upright Citizens Brigade show earlier tonight?
-RoG- (Guest) on 07/02/2007 1:33 am
Sean, haha yeah I was at the Upright Citizens Brigade show tonight. I missed the cut-off in the line, so I didn't get to see the first half of the show, but they let me in for the 2nd half. Pretty annoying since there were a bunch of extra seats left apparently, but the show was still entertaining as ever... I always enjoy checking out Asssscat. You should've tracked me down and said "hey" or somethin man, it's always cool meeting people who frequent the site in person.

Contra Hard Corps for the Genesis: Best Contra EVER. Unique characters, non stop action and, best of all, tons of diferent paths and ending depending on your actions.

...
-RoG-, at the corner of Olive & Verdugo in the 91505, their is a Kwik-E-Mart. I am not kidding.
Goatboy (Guest) on 07/02/2007 1:22 pm
Kwik-E-Mart? I'd rather go to the Circle K, where strange things are afoot.

Jesse, I know, I was there last night! I saw it on my way home and grabbed my camera. It's one of twelve 7-Eleven stores in the entire country that have been converted to a Kwik-E-Mart.
Pictures forthcoming!
Goatboy, Wyld Stallyns Rule!
Teros (Guest) on 07/02/2007 5:42 pm
I beat Contra but I used the Konami code to do it and even then I was down to about 3 lives. Of course, I had no backup, I was on my own. I'm gonna import this game because I want Contra, Not Probotector (the EU version of Contra) which is most likely the name it will get here.
Bluevirage (Guest) on 07/03/2007 2:27 am
WayForward is doing the latest Contra. All their previous stuff, not counting all the licensed stuff; done purely for cash to keep their operation going is GOLD.
This is another game that will sell DS systems. Count on it.
Jesse B (Guest) on 07/03/2007 9:39 am
Should I get credit for the Kwik-E-Mart artice or something?
Y'know?
-RoG- (Guest) on 07/03/2007 3:30 pm
Jesse, hahah I had already been there before you even suggested it to me. I stumbled on it as I was driving home from a UCB show. Thanks for posting about it either way though, it's always appreciated!
Jesse B (Guest) on 07/03/2007 7:26 pm
LIES!
LIES AND SLANDER!
I swear that one day, it could be tomorrow, it could be a month from now, it could be when I kneecap you in a dark alley one night, I will have my name in a I-Mockery article, even if its that last thing I do!
Black Tooth Grin (Guest) on 07/04/2007 7:59 pm
Teros, I doubt we'll get Proboretector or whatever.
People have gotten passed that silly "its okay to kill robots, but not humans" law.
MEX-TCB (Guest) on 07/06/2007 2:20 am
Looks pretty great, almost enough to make me get a DS. My only handheld at the moment is the Sega Nomad, which is excellent because I have Contra Hard corps. All you Contra fans should give this game a try as its hands down one of the best video games ever made. 1st couple times I tried to play I just got raped, but then I got the hang of the slide and level memorization, and holy shit! I smoke a blunt an play this shit with the only other person i know who can hang with me 2 player style, an the shit makes my brain melt(in a good way!)It takes crazy skillz and is just non stop action with ubsurd bosses and patterns, Konami's best! I love the origional Contra and the Snes one, but you have to play hard core, on a real genesis, no save states or rom bullspit. DO IT! I have just barely beat it on one path, but theres a bunch of paths! Its nuts! PS..always be the Robot
Kenny/Riot.EXE (Guest) on 07/06/2007 5:14 pm
I always knew the code as Up Up Down Down Left right Left Right B A B A Select Start...
but anyways, this game is a definite buy...but I play contra Solo...people always get me killed...
