The Ball Is Back… On DVD!

Boy oh Boooooooooooyyy!

Boy oh Booooooooyyy! This is something I'm really glad to see - Phantasm 2 is FINALLY coming out on DVD here in the US on September 15th. For years, it was tied up in legal limbo for a US release, so fans weren't able to watch that particular movie unless it happened to air on TV or they played an old VHS tape of it. I've always been torn between which of the first two Phantasm films I like best, but I always seem to lean towards the second one for its sheer entertainment value. The first Phantasm was a groundbreaking horror movie in every way possible. Angus Scrimm immediately became one of the most memorable and downright creepy horror icons of the past 30 years as the Tall Man, and the movie itself is one of the few that I believe deserves an honored place in the coveted "actually scary" category of horror films.

Phantasm 2, on the other hand, while still creepy in parts, had the very different atmosphere of an action-horror-comedy instead of the bizarre and surreal nature of the original. It's probably the most entertaining film of the series and definitely the more accessible one for the general public. I don't think anybody can deny the awesomeness of Reggie Bannister, the world's greatest ice cream man, and his quad-barrel shotgun in this film. So yeah, chalk me up as one of the people who couldn't be happier to see Phantasm 2 finally getting its long overdue DVD release.

All that said, I gotta say that the release is just slightly bittersweet. Once again, they've swapped out the original classic poster artwork for the insert with some Photoshopped imagery. As you probably recall from my post a few years back, in which I purchased a copy of Maximum Overdrive and mentioned how I hate when companies don't use the original (and almost always superior) poster art from films, this is something that will forever annoy me.

The only other problem I'm having with purchasing it is that Anchor Bay released a badass Phantasm Sentinel Sphere box set in the UK several years ago which I posted about at the time. I'm wondering if we'll ever see that incredibly cool set come to the US now that Phantasm 2 (the only one that was still unreleased) is finally out on DVD. I know the only huge difference is novelty packaging, but I am ALL about novelty packaging, especially when the DVDs come inside a shiny sentinel sphere. So if there was a chance the sphere set was going to be released here any time soon, I'd probably hold out for it. However, since I haven't heard any mention of such a thing happening, and it will probably take them an eternity to get the legal crap for that set sorted out even if they do decide to release the full set (Universal owns part 2, Anchor Bay owns the rest), I think I'll go ahead and get the single DVD. I just want to be able to watch one of my favorite classic horror sequels again. Actually, wait a minute... I could just buy the UK sphere set and stick the region 1 US Phantasm DVDs inside it and my problem will be solved. BRILLIANT!

So what about you guys? Which Phantasm movie is your favorite and why? What are some of your favorite moments from the series? I already shared one of mine a few years ago (and I just updated it so it's in the new site template as well).

This is sweet. I love all the Phantasm films. The Tall Man scared the living shit our of me when I was a kid. Scrimm is one creepy dude.

Oh, and my favorite moment is actually a comedic one. Reggie (who as you mentioned is awesome) is trying to score with a chick they picked up, figuring he has a shot since they are already sharing a bed.

Finally she seems to succumb to his bald, ice-cream dealing charms. She decides to get kinky and pulls out a pair of handcuffs. Reggie is thrilled, and allows her to cuff him to the bed.

Then she rolls over and goes to sleep. Poor Reggie.

I think that I will need to find this somewhere.

I've only seen part one, but my favorite scene is when the kid is sleeping and he looks up to see the Tall Man hovering over him in a graveyard as arms bust from the ground and grab him.

Ugh, I'm probably going to get crap for this, but I cannot stand Phantasm, and not because of the movie, but because of the fans. For whatever reason, marketing maybe, it seems like every frat boy in America had seen this movie when I was in college and whenever the subject of the movie came up they'd be all "dude, this shit is so wack, it'll totally blow your mind!" or similar. But these are the same people who would then say that Suspiria or other really weird 70's horror movies were "stupid" just because they were weird. I never understood why Phantasm was cool because it was weird, and the rest of them sucked becuase they were weird. I dunno, its one of those cases where the memories of people talking about it spoils the movie for me :(

I know what you mean, matty, similar experiences did that to me, but see I learned how to get over myself and stop letting my sphincter tighten over fanboys of a movie. :3

just buy the UK boxset (which is great by the way) and a multiregion player. Most are in the UK. Job done!

The problem I see with this is we FINALLY get a full dvd release only for dvds to be outdated. When will we get a proper BLUE-RAY release? This is a problem with older horror movies, namely they have yet to be released on a hi-def format.

Getting back on topic, I liked the hanging scene from the first film. Nothing is scarier than somebody who's been strung up for DAYS and is still perfectly fine.

Btw when are were gonna get some sentinal sphere halloween props? Seems like a no-brainer for anchor bay... take a over-size christmas bulb, glue on a fake knife and triple the price tag. I'd sure buy one!

HowardC, they actually made some limited edition sentinel sphere model kits a while ago. And yeah, I've seen 'em sell for over 80 bux. There are also some people out there who build some pretty badass custom ones with real blades if you wanna shell out the cash for 'em. Me, I'd be satisfied with the sentinel sphere DVD set like they released in the UK.

I've only seen Phantasm 2 and I remember the shotgun best...

Also, it had James LeGros in it who I reconosed years later in another great movie "Living in Oblivion"...(not a horror film but comedy about film makers making a film - check it out you won't be diappointed - it has Steve Buscemi in it)

I don't know why I remember all this or how it's relevant but there you go...

Sheesh!...Excuse the spelling in my previous post. I've been up since 5am and currently have an 8 month old gnawing at my ankle...

Its about fucking time! The only time I ever saw the movie was on the Sci-Fi channel in 2004, and some old hag managed to get the only known copy in town when Hollywood Video got rid of their VHS

I got all 4 movies on DVD a few years ago for 10€, but without the sentinel ball.
DVD/Blueray: I don't think the movie exists in a Quality to see a difference.
And i put my "Tall Man"-action figure back next to my DVD collection

I bought a used VHS copy from the video store I used to work at 6 or 7 years back because there wasn't a DVD at the time.

I actually just recently watched this on FEARnet a few months ago. Fun movie and definitely the best of the sequels.

Phantasm 1 and 4 are art films, 3 is like one of those movies made out of two or more episodes of a short lived TV series, but 2 is an 80s classic. I'm way excited and for years I've been holding off on getting any of the Phantasms on DVD cause it would be incomplete. They better put the ball boxset out in the US but I doubt they will. Anchor Bay should also release Santa Sangre in the US, I have no fucking clue why its not, its one of the most intensely bizarre Mexican art-house slashers ever made.

But hell yeah, Phantasm 2 on DVD!

I'm not positive what the original poster / art was, does it happen to be this?

I was only recently introduced to the Phantasm series in the past year or so, and I had to see them all on VHS tapes on a barely working player. I'm no happy to be able to get this on DVD!
