A Monster Makeover From General Mills!

While I've already covered the 2014 Monster Cereals, how General Mills has released both the 80s incarnations of their boxes (complete with classic cut-out masks) and a more modern incarnation of the original trio of monsters, I simply have to show you what arrived on my doorstep today.

General Mills sent me this incredibly nice "Monster Makeover" box to commemorate their recent collaboration with artists from DC Comics to create the slick new limited-edition looks for Boo Berry, Franken Berry, and Count Chocula. Inside, I found one of each of these new cereal boxes, which is already a great surprise, but it's what's on the outside of the box that really stunned me in the best possible way. I realize what you see above just looks like a somewhat fancy box with a cute skull & cross-spoons and coffin utensils pattern; no big deal, right? Well, that's only because you haven't seen what they did on the other three sides. Behold!

When I first saw this box I shouted "holy crap!", and Re came running into the room thinking there was some kind of an emergency... and there was, because my jaw had fallen onto the floor. General Mills had actually sent me a beautifully crafted box with framed images of each of the big three cereal monsters. What's even better, each monster illustration is actually a large lenticular image! By turning the box, you can see your favorite monsters morph from their original 70s likenesses into their 2014 incarnations. Killer! I love how they created a nice blue frame around Boo Berry too, so it actually looks like a photo worth hanging on a wall. He even has a few happy lil' blue ghosts flying around him. Well, I think they're ghosts. They might be moons, or moon ghosts. Yes, that's what they are - moon ghosts.

Hit the jump to see the other monster sides plus a video to see the box in action!

Here be the Franken Berry side of the Monster Makeover box. As you can see, he has a pink moon and some stars around him. This confirms that the spirits on Boo Berry's side were indeed moon ghosts. Excellent.

And lastly, we have the Count Chocula side, complete with vampire bats flying around his head in search of blood... or chocolate milk. I also went ahead and shot a quick video of it so you can see the full box in motion:

This is one hell of a nice gift, so big thanks to my chums over at General Mills for sending it out to me! While I don't believe this set is being made available to the general public, I honestly think General Mills should do just that. Come on, Big G! Make it a special item exclusive to some retail chain if you want, just like how Target stores are the only ones that carry the retro versions of the cereal boxes. Either way, this is something I guarantee ALL Monster Cereal fans would want to get their hands on. A 3-pack of Boo Berry, Franken Berry, and Count Chocula that shows their transformation from the 70s to modern times? That's a collectible someone would hold onto their entire life.

I know I will.

That is a thing of beauty. If GM doesn't want to release the box to the general public, I think they could at least release individual cereal boxes with those lenticular panels on the backs.

A-bomb: Why put it on the back? Put them on the front for all to see! It'd make more people stop and look at it. Sell more cereal that way!

Man, I need to start buttering up to them and writing them letters. I want to get in on this free ceral train. Gotta love that level of customer loyalty. Someone over there probably still remembers your Totally Obsessed segment.

This is beyond cool. The fact it changes to their originals is nothing short of awesome.

They should seriously put lenticular images on all cereal boxes, they're just fun.. and they catch the eye, right? So that's... business.. or something.
Hell I just like the word lenticular.

Man, everything DC gets involved in has those lenticular covers now. At least this is way cooler than another events month.

Hey Rog, have you seen that Target is also now selling Count Chocula cereal bars and Franken- and Boo Berry Fruit Roll Ups? With the retro box designs, no less!

choco - Yep! If you follow I-Mockery on Facebook, I posted a photo of all of them last night actually. Here they are:

As you can see, there are Boo Berry & Franken Berry Fruit Roll-Ups and Count Chocula Treats. These have been around for a few seasons now, but this is the first time they've ever come in their classic 1970s retro packaging style!

This is truly the most amazing event in the history of flavored cereal.

Hoju Koolander (Guest) on 09/23/2014 5:03 pm

Is it just me or has lenticular technology really taken a leap forward since the 20th century? The transition to such clear and complete images is amazing. Good stuff, RoG.
