Title: Earthworm Jim
Author:Shiny
Rom Player: ZSNES

Synopsis: Earthworm Jim! Through the soil he did crawl. Earthworm Jim! A super suit did fall. Jim was just a dirt-eating chewy link of worm flesh, but all that came to a crashing end. Oh boy, did it ever...

Earthworm Jim was one of the craziest games I ever played. When I was a kid, I laughed my ass off playing this damn game. Today there are games like Ninja Gaiden, Rygar, and Shinobi getting updated, but, as great as they were, none of these games can even compare to Earthworm Jim. In fact (dare I say it?) I bet Jim could kick ALL of their asses at the same time. Anyways, on to the actual game...

For anybody who has never even HEARD of Earthworm Jim, first let me tell you to pull your head out of your ass, then we'll have a basic story rundown. Three super-villains, Bob the Goldfish, Evil the Cat, and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt (short for Evil Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-Filled, Malformed, Slug-For-A-Butt) are all after a ultra super-duper suit built by Professor Monkey-for-a-Head. Just regular villain Psy-crow was on his way to deliver the suit to the Queen when, long story short, he fucks up. The suit falls to Earth and lands on an earthworm that happened to be named Jim. Jim gains a bunch of cool new powers and sets out to save Princess Whats-Her-Name (her real name) from the Queen while trying to fight off Evil the Cat, Psy-crow, and the evil Professor at the same time.

The best thing about this game was its humor. The graphic design, the music, and everything else were all meant to make you laugh. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't, but it’s all entertaining. The music is generally pretty long and fits the stages very well (the level "What the Heck?" comes to mind). The graphics are great as well, though sometimes a bit tedious.

The gameplay and control are decent, Jim responds quickly and cleanly to the controls. From giant hampster rides and Psy-crow space races to suitless worm crawls, Earthworm Jim has plenty of variation to keep you interested in the levels. One of my favorites involves whipping Peter the Puppy to prevent him from hurting himself on spikes, pits, or other nasty things. If you don't, Peter turns into a giant, rabid monster that viciously tears into you. The REAL challenge comes in trying to keep up with Peter while fending off the damn monsters that would love nothing more than seeing you ripped into by your "fuzzy buddy." Of course, the only big downside to the levels is the Tube Race. I won't go into this too much, but lets just say that there are tooth marks on one of my controllers and A LOT of duct tape on the other.

Earthworm Jim was a great franchise that simply wasn't exploited to its full potential. There was an Earthworm Jim TV show for a while, but that only lasted 6 episodes or some other ridiculously low number. Earthworm Jim must NOT be forgotten! Buy as many of his games as you can find! Don't let him pass into obscurity with all the other greats like Final Fight and the Ninja Turtles! We must save Jim!
