Title: Caliber 50
Author:Mentrix Software Inc.
Rom Player: KGEN

Synopsis: More war in the Far East? Wooo! Ahem, well, that is the basic idea behind the game: your jet crashes somewhere in the Far East in 1972, and you decide to try and escape in 1992. The first thing you’ll notice is that your character has to be in his 20s, 30s at most. Apparently, playing arcade games gave him enough hand-eye coordination to make him a Top Gun by age 8. Bad plot aside this is a good game. It handles much like Smash TV, with just as much killing, but no toasters. You get weapon upgrades by picking up bullet shells that enemies drop when you kill them. This actually increases your life, as well as your weapons. Despite this, the weapon choice is severely limited. You start out with a machine gun, and then proceed to get the rocket launcher, and then the flamethrower. You find various powerups throughout the levels that maximize your life, extend your weapon’s reach, kill everything on-screen, etc. As in many other games, the enemies range from believable to LSD trip. Typically, you’ll see lots of white guys in safari gear and old men with berets despite the game being set in the Far East. The bosses, however, really show off mental problems in the game’s creators. They range from a big tank to giant howler monkeys and turtles. Apparently, there were a lot of chemical weapons being tested in the Far East during the 70s. The sound effects are pretty weak, especially since there were no howler monkey screams. The music was ok, but was somewhat repetitive. Still, fans of the shooter genre will love the consistent carnage.
