Title: Dune 2
Author:Westwood Studios
Rom Player: PC
Reviewer: Igor Levi

Synopsis: This is the game that started it all. The first real time strategy game ever made. (For those of you who do not know what RTS is, itís basically where you control army units around a map at the same time as your opponent without having turns) All strategy games before this had turns, meaning that every time you move a unit or a certain number of units, you could not play while your opponent used his turn.

This game changed everything because there were actual missions, technologies and differences in the 3 "houses". The three houses were different races that were trying to take over a planet named Dune. I played this game for the first time back in 1994 and I was hooked. There were all kinds of units that you would get after progressing in the game, you would harvest "spice" for money and you fought a different race each time on a different map.

This game sparked much interest in the strategy genre and Command & Conquer was born. This game had more involved missions and better graphics and videos. A new company emerged called Blizzard that created Warcraft, a fantasy based RTS. Dune 2000 was released by Westwood as a sequel to Dune 2, and it had the best graphics of the day. The third Dune, Dune: Emperor is currently being offered and it has the best graphics of any RTS (in my opinion, some may say that Warcraft III is better).

Dune II is almost impossible to find now. Since it is a DOS game, it will not run on Windows XP.

The only bad thing I have to say against this game is that the controls are button-based and you could only control one unit at a time. This is a bitch for large attacks because you have to send units individually. The button interface means that you have to tell the unit what you want to do with a button (attack, guard, stop). With the new games, all you need is a mouse and it is much easier.

Best Cheats: There is one cheat that I am aware of. When you choose a new territory to attack, there is sometimes a "hammer" that appears in the corner next to your money count. This means you have unlimited cash. If you go to a land that does not have it, simply kill all your units by making them attack each other and choose a different land.
