Title: Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters
Rom Player: Nesticle?
Reviewer: SuperXAsh

Synopsis: Ah yes... Godzilla 2 for the Nintendo. I remember getting this for my birthday... seeing the kickass sweet cartridge art, with Godzilla looking all pissed above the towers of Tokyo city, thinking "OH YEAH!!! That's the SHIT!! Time to open a can of whoop ass!!!".

Then I put the game into my NES console... and... found out what it REALLY was about.

It's a strategy war-game where you are put in control of... the Military. Your mission?: Stop Godzilla and his fellow monster. Now... what the fuck is up with that shit?

That'd be like if they made a game where you're a common everyday criminal/thug being thrown up against the Justice League or Avengers. You're screwed from the get go!!

Ok... so you're the military... or as the game called it... Allied Defense Force. Guess Toho decided that the UN wouldn't be too effective for this, since Giant Monsters don't give a fuck if you send them a letter telling them not to cause destruction. So you're in control of this coalition of military forces, and your jobs is to protect major cities from destruction by the giant monsters.

The approach or format of the game is like that or most WAR games. You get a turn to move your units and the Computer gets it's turn to move it's super powerful units. Just like a standard strategy game format.

You get the amazing arsenal of tanks, missile launchers, planes, supply trucks, and all the other things that we saw Godzilla and company stomp the ever living shit out of as children growing up. And you WILL be stomped... mercilessly, into the ground... by all the assorted giant monsters that are thrown at you.

And they come marching in too. Almost all the biggest and baddest monsters from the early Godzilla movie series are present. Godzilla, Rodan, Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster, Hedorah the Smog Monster, Baragon, Mothra, and a UFO. They CAN be defeated... but usually only after twenty or so tanks (or WHATEVER) have been thrown at them.

There are only a few saving graces though, First, in the form of the SY-3 super jet thing, with a very impressive array of anti-monster weaponry. This is by far your best bet in a fight. BUT the catch is... you have to assemble the parts for it first and transport them to a sciense lab for them to be put together. All this while the tanks, jets, and whatever are getting thrashed by nigh-unstoppable monsters. That and you have to successfully get these pieces to the lab... and not run into any monsters in the process.

Then there's the mighty Super-X2. A little pod jet thing with some impressive weapons at it's disposal and can take a few good hits before exploding.

The final saving grace comes in the form of... Mothra. Yes... Mothra and her caterpillar larvae are the only monsters you get to control in this game (That is after they've kicked your ass for a couple a scenarios). What a fucking gyp. I'd rather have Godzilla on my side personally.

So... a big let-down for me. I wasn't the most strategic minded of persons back then, (and watching your units get demolished for the 18th time kinda wears on ya) and they throw possibly the biggest frickin' obstacle at you in the form of GODZILLA and his monster cohorts.

So I can only recommend this for strategy game fans and only the most die-hard absolute Godzilla fans/completists who need to own EVERYTHING with his name or likeness pasted next to it. Other than that... I can't think of anything to really recommend about this game.

I suggest playing Super Godzilla for the SNES or even the first Godzilla game for the NES.

Best Cheats: Detonate the A-Bomb. Tired of Godzilla putting the boots to your ass? In select levels you are giving an atomic bomb for some fuckin' reason... and it's task is mysterious... other than being able to detonate. Which ends the scenario but still is fun to do.
