|Title: Bases Loaded
Rom Player: NESticle
Reviewer: Steve Leone
Synopsis: This was the start of the true baseball fanaticís game. From what I can remember, Bases Loaded was the first game to implement a full season mode. Sure, there was no battery backup and you had to keep scribbling down the codes to continue the season, but what the hell? Also, unlike today's arcade-ish baseball games where 23-21 football scores are way too common, this game was hard to win without cheating. There were twelve teams to choose from, all being generic. However, since I was from Jersey, I always chose them. What a surprise to my 7-year-old ass when I first found out that Jersey had the master of disaster: Paste. Paste was Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth rolled into one. Batting .400 and with 60 homers, the ball usually sailed out of the park with ease for him. Ah, the days I remember trouncing my dad royally with him. Anyway, here are my ratings:
Gameplay 8.. This was a great game, but it did have its moments of slowdown. However, this was the first game I know of that also included errors, which could totally fuck your game up.
Graphics 9- For a Nintendo game, these graphics were quite awesome, the behind-the-pitcher view when batting was well done, and the field view was quite good.
Music 7- Anyone who has played this game knows the main themes. When the game first loaded in, we were greeted with the DA DA DA DA DAA theme that sounded like a fucking parade. This game also used voice acting for the umps calling strikes balls and outs.
Originality 9- This game started the console video game full season mode, pitcher-batter interface, brawls, ejections, and many other things.
Overall 8- This game was probably one of the best baseball games for Nintendo, even surpassing the sequels. If you can find this in FuncoLand, eBay, or on a Rom (even though the rom I have is very buggy)... get it. It is well worth it.
