View Full Version : Emulation of old PC games

I wanna play games like the first King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Monkey Island, and possibly others. These older games don't seem to fall under "roms," because I haven't seen any rom sites that support these older games.

So, where do you find them, and how easy is it to set them up and play them on your computer? I imagine you install them and run an .exe that goes into DOS, right?

http://abandongames.com/

http://dosgames.com/

These sites have the standard list of games that can be legally downloaded (I didn't know Police Quest 1 was legal?)

Other than that, you'll probably have to try looking on Kazaa. It's a slim shot, but it's hard to get old dos games nowadays. Seems like only yesterday (or 1998) you could get any full version game you want anytime. And you didn't have to vote for peoples websites either.

Just search for abandonware on Google.

Home of the Underdogs is also a good site for getting some of the lesser known games. Chances are you will have to run these games on an older computer, though. A lot of them won't work properly in XP depending on your hardware (or run too fast).

Ok, here's another question.

I downloaded the old Mega Man PC game, and the question is: How the hell do I slow this game down? The instant I start the game, a robot cat comes up and kills me because it's running so fast it's virtually unplayable right now.

What should I do?

download a slow-down utility of some sort :/ I don't relaly know what's out there that works anymore, as MoSlo crashes on 1 ghz+ machines now :(

DosBox. Google it. Then there's VDM or somesort sound card emulator that can work for most simple old games. Tell you what, since I have had some experience with running old games on XP, tell me which game you are trying to emulate and I'll tell you what combination of utility and settings to use to run it. Not that it will work for sure, but at least you'll be having someone helping you.

Ok, i got DosBox, and for some weird reason, it's set to Z:\ yet I don't have a drive named Z:\

How do I change it?

Helm

Okay I can't help you if you're gonna be stupid. Read the documentation. You can bind a directory in your hard drive to the virtual drive Z:

subst z: <directory>

It's DOS, fo'shizzle. If you want to play the games, learn the controls. >: :(

You don't want to play Mega Man for the PC. Seriously. The fact that it doesn't work is a hint from the video game gods. The game is awful.

Drev

I KNOW it's awful, but the thing is, I wanna play all the Maga Man games, even the 2 shitty ones.

All these sites I'm going through don't have the games for download, or they just have demos. WTF.

If it's abandonware, doesn't that mean the full game should be available for download, and there is no excuse to not have it for me to download? >:

Classic Trash (http://www.classic-trash.com/) has a few full version games.

Edit: Okay, for some reason it redirects you to "ping games" or whatever. I don't know how reliable that site is.

Yeah, I actually am playing the remake of KQ2 right now.

I tried downloading LSL2 from one of the other sites, but I couldn't figure out how to install it (the install setup kept exiting instead of setting up the game), and the downloads for KQ2 and 3 I got didn't have any installers, which I guess would mean I have to run them manually in DOS, which I don't know how to do.

Have you tried running the executable? That usually works. :rolleyes :P

Yeah, that would work if there were any. That's part of the problem.

http://www.the-underdogs.org/ has a lot of great stuff. There's no signing up or voting, just a lot of abandonware. The only catch is that you're limited to one download at a time.

executioneer

yeah but he wants old lucasarts and sierra shit and they're protected so you can't download off of HOTU >:

Buy the LEC games. Seriously. Indy FOA talkie is bliss. Can't go wrong with their classic period anyway. Be at least that decent to get their greatest games original. Mail them and ask for copies.
