I think you're supposed to grab 'em by their undersides with a pair of tweezers. That or you just crush it.

You could pour water on it and knock it loose with minimal chance of it biting and latching on to you, too.

EDIT: It's in your leg? :/

No, you're supposed to light a match and then poke at it with the hot tip to get it to back out, but this one's too small for that and it apparently doesn't work anyway :/

Edit: Yeah :/

if you burn it it will vomit into your skin and you will get an infection :/

just yank it out

You shouldn't use a match or a hot pin (another version). That'll make the tick vomit before it detaches, which will lead to infection. Your best bet is to get a pair of tweezers and dig to it's head and pinch from there. This closes off it's mouth/anus, and keeps the head from popping off and staying in your leg thus leading to more infection if you just "yank it out".

If you're afraid to end up an amputee due to the massive infection and possible Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, go to the ER and check into the minor care; Doctors have much better tools to extract foreign objects.

I got it out, and now there's a small swolen bruisy thing there :/ getting it out hurt just a bit and only for a second, but I'm not certain if anything's left in there.

You people are ridiculous. Not a lot of ticks in your neighborhood, I take it?

I'd take walks in the woods as a little kid and sometimes come back with three or four on me (not always biting, but generally..). Two fingers, grab it next to your skin, rip it off and then torture it with whatever implements are handy. If it's the kind that would infect you with something, it already started injecting you with saliva when it bit and you're fucked no matter how you take it off. And if it's not that kind, the wound it makes is small enough that the only way to actually hurt yourself would be to try and dig it off your skin with a knife.

Most tick infections are due to peoplejust yanking them out and leaving the head in, or by various other means of "tricking" the tick to dislodge. Infection because of leaving the head in is quite obvious, but the other aren't. Since a tick has no anus it has to vomit it's waste, and any reason for the tick to dislodge it's head will make it vomit.

I know this because my area is infested with ticks, the kind that give you all sorts of diseases. Here, people who just yank it out will eventually find themselves in the hospital.

Maybe I'm lucky cause all the ticks where I grew up were the kind that are just annoying and not dangerous then. Because I must've pulled out a hundred of them over the years and never got sick nor heard of anyone in the area getting sick from a tick.

Of course, I also never heard of the head coming off. Usually a piece of skin was left in the tick's jaws, not vice versa.

I agree with Perndog on this. You people, so afraid of a little tick infection. No wonder you people get sick so easily. Always worried about the little things that keep your immune system in practice.

You only have to worry about lyme if the tick has been on you for several days. And lyme is something to worry about, well depending on the area.
Although it's too late - to pull it off without leaving the head inside your best bet is to grab it and "unscrew" it, not just pull. Appart from the vaseline thing. Or you could also apply some frontline or the like on the bugger with a q-tip.

I just watched a TLC program about ticks. They did a cheesy reanactment of this kid that was sent to the hospital and they took a needle and shoved it in her spine to check and see if she had some disease because she had paralysis, but it was a tick. The program said that the effects of the north american tick will wear off after taking it out but the one in Australia gets worse when you remove it and lots of people die : :x

Did you know, you could possibly kill, or paralyze someone, if you took a axe and chopped them in the spin. >:
