View Full Version : Is my Iron intake healthy?
The One and Only...

Is 18 mg of iron + whatever I get from my food daily actually healthy?
Fully grown adult males do not need that much iron as they bleed far less than females (menstruation), but then again, I'm a growing youth. I need more iron due to the development of muscle mass.
Even so, so high an intake seems excessive. Over-intake of iron can result in free radical damage due to reactions between unabsorbed iron in the body and peroxides.
However, I do have a high intake of Vitamin C (Over 500% DV +) and Zinc (100% DV +). Both of these nutrients work as antioxidants which prevent free radical damage. Ironically, Vitamin C also increases iron absorbtion mildly... but, hell, I don't have hemachromatosis.
Anyway... can someone inform me on this?

Take a centrum and stop worrying so much. I'm sure you have health insurance b/c you are such a conservative so go ask a doctor what you need.

Yeah that's plenty. Most people don't even take supplements and turn out fine.

Your gastric juices are going to demolish much of the content, as part of the normal digestive process. A lot of what you take in does not get as readily absorbed as you would think. Especially many vitamins and minerals, which people tend to shit out in whole form without ever really knowing it.
If you had THAT much iron in your diet, you'd be wheel barreling your cock around. That's the first place that gets the iron y'know. ;)

I agree with punkgrrlie.

The only way you can be sure you're getting enough iron is to soak rusty nails in 18 molar HCL for two days, then imbibe. I recommend taking it with grenadine. Then proceed to get an MRI, so that you can see which areas need special attention. You can never have too much iron.

"Fully grown adult males do not need that much iron as they bleed far less than females (menstruation),"
Thanks for clearing that one up for us. The issue, that is, not the menstruate itself.

I don't think you guys understand.
I KNOW that I'm getting enough iron. The question is if I'm getting TOO MUCH.
As I said before, excessive iron causes free radical damage. This is aside from iron absorption.
I'm hoping that my other vitamins which act as antioxidents will deal with any such problems.

Why are you asking anyways? Do you think you won't grow correctly because you don't have a maximum iron intake every day?
The only iron you should be getting is from food anyways because you're more likely to suffer from too much than too little.

read his posts, he obviously has an educated opinion. It's just another of his useless threads. He obviously knows or knows how to find the information he is asking for, he's just being a douche.

The reason I'm asking is because I take a vitamin supplement for teens that includes iron in it. GNC's Mega Teen product, to be exact.
Although I doubt this level of iron intake would be toxic for a boy my age, I like to get confirmation from those more knowledgable than me. I figured Jeanette would know something about this.
