Oddly enough, after posting this:
In Louisiana, we don't have tornadoes.
We have hurricanes.
...we receive one of those ear-shrilling cable interruptions which announce that we have one heading our way, accompanied by severe thunderstorms. I started panicking a little bit because lightning struck a house just down the road from here (and might I add, caused my dog to do a hilarious 5-foot jump).
10 minutes later, a heavy downpour starts. My mom calls (paranoid woman that she is) and tells me I probably shouldn't leave the house because if I get caught in water over the road I could be swept away.
10 minutes after that.... it's all over. The sun is out, and it's dry and hot for the rest of the day.
Those damn people at the NWS made me panic for no reason >:

What happens if you don't have the tv on or radio? how do they notify you?

One supposes the 100mph winds knocking your house down would be alert enough.
Seriously... I noticed it clouding up awfully quick, but the wind never picked up.
On another note... without radio or TV, I suppose a paranoid mother is a good way of finding out. Had my TV been off, her panicky phone call would've alerted me to our "tornado".

Yeh.. we just got a severe thunderstorm warning. Which will soon enough turn into a tornado warning. :-/

If it was anything like ours, you'll get a ten minute downpour.
I felt let down (but also strangely relieved). The Emergency Transmission that interrupted my TV promised "dime sized hail".

It's over with now. Wasn't much to it.. just a shit-load of thunder and hail. I think my roof almost broke. :(
No tornado though. :/

The other day, the Doppler Weather System showed just a blip of a weather system just north of Port Huron, MI but issued absolutely no warnings for the tornado that blasted through just north of the city. This wouldn't have been so annoying if this hadn't been proceeded by several days graphics of huge weather systems and numerous tornado warnings from the same sources which barely amounted to any real occurences of tornados. There WAS extensive flood damage, though. Sucked to be them, but I was alright.

The weather in NJ changes every 10 minutes, so you can't believe anything the forecasters say.

So basically if you are a heavy sleeper and don't get woken up by the torrential winds then you die?

Punkgrrrlie: You only die if the storm is THAT bad.
Say, if I'd slept through all the warnings for Hurricane Andrew... one supposes my body'd be a stripped skeleton in a drainage ditch right now.
I found it kinda funny that they were even about to issue an evacuation order (I'm not kidding at ALL) for a 10-minute downpour. You shoulda seen my neighbors all take off :lol
