Rent this movie. Now. It is fucking amazing.
The attention to historical detail alone is incredible, as is the editing, but what blew me away was the final scene with the draft riots. For those of you who don't know, in the middle of the Civil War there were horrible riots in New York. News of them was suppressed, and the movie presents a carefully reconstructed version of events that were ignored for over a hundred years. The violence in that movie made the Rodney King riots in L.A during the 1990's look about as scary as a fart in a phone booth by comparision.
It was incredible how savage people were back then. I know that NY was a very tough place during that era, but even the worst modern American city looks like a fucking utopia by comparison.
I think the part that moved me the most was the final scene, when they are in the graveyard, and the city is in smoldering ruins behind them. They get up and leave, and music starts up, and the scene changes, showing NY from various stages throughout the 20th Century, and finally it ends with a shot of modern NY, with the WTC still up.
Just go see the damn thing.

I liked it, but it had pacing problems and also Cameron Diaz problems.

I also liked it, but are you sure that it was truly historically accurate? It seemed cartoony and exaggerated to me, but I don't know the history of New York, so whatever.
It was good fun to watch, but I found the final scene corny. :s

It was my second favourite movie of 2002 after About Schmidt. It's definitely a classic, and was really under-rated. It got robbed at the Oscars, even though The Pianist is a very good film. But, Gangs of New York is a broader-line masterpiece.

I liked Daniel Day Lewis. It was a beautiful looking film but I it too violent and cartoonish like Krythor said. Royal liked About Schmidt :lol what a piece of crap...Kathy Bates naked is enough to make anyone never want to see a movie again.

that movie's attention to historic detail is crap. Those two gangs were not the only ones in New York, and the ceratainly weren't the most powerful.

Of course there were more than two gangs! They mentioned the other gangs, but it was about the two of them. You can't expect them to incorperate all of them into it.

It doesn't matter if you said it first. My saying completely invalidates your having said it because I'm so much cooler than you.

I know and have met Mockery personally and consider him a friend. He was making a joke, yes, but was in no way making fun of me. If, for example, he called me a witless, annoying, universally loathed fuckwit on the level of fartinmowler, then I would consider it an insult.
