View Full Version : Anyone here taking interest in World of Warcraft?

Apparently my post yesterday got eaten by the board so I'll just make it again:
So, anyone takin an interest in WoW? I sorta am. I've never played or felt the urge to play a MMORPG, partially because of the horror stories you hear of people who become obsessed with the game, and partially because most fantasy games are too complex and settled in their own genre (all using similar stat systems, terms and abbreviations, and seemingly expecting the player to be familiar with them). However, Blizzard claims, for one, that they're trying to make the game so you won't have to spend 24 hours a day online to actually enjoy the game and be good at it. And I have some faith in Blizzard to make games that are entertaining, good, and accessible to people new to the genre.
There's of course also the matter of the playing fee, which has yet to be established, and I can't make an estimate of it since I have no material for comparison. It's one thing to get too hooked on a game that it starts taking up all your time - it's another to lose all your money to it.
But all that aside, the concept of playing alongside thousands of other people in one of my favorite gaming worlds - that of Warcraft - seems awfully fun. I think I'll definitely want to check it out at least, assuming that the game comes with for instance one month of free online playing, as I think is standard with MMORPGs. But I'm still wary about the problems of getting addicted to a game that doesn't end. I don't play a whole lot of games anymore, but when I do find one I like, I often spend long hours playing it through.

I'm too addicted to FF6 to play anything else, but once I murder Kefka I might try Warcraft, after seeing Starwarcraft :lol

I dont really enjoy mmrpgs much mostly becasue it isnt much pvp and they take forever to do anything interesting. but I am fairly interested. Warcraft/starcraft are some of the only rts games i enjoy, mostly becuase of their simplicity when compared to others, but their total depth of gameplay. Hope fully this will be as easy to enjoy. If i do play it however I am not going to pay for an account by myself, I plan on sharing with a roomate or something like that.

One of my friends was chosen for the WoW beta. He says that there's a system already in effect that penalizes you for playing a lot.
Your character has something like a stamina level (I forget the exact name) and the longer you play, the less experience you get. There's several categories that your character progresses through, from "well-rested" to "tired" or something. On "tired" you basically get no experience for running around and killing stuff, hence playing 72 hours straight won't get you anywhere.
You also have to wait something like 8 hours while being LOGGED OUT in order for your character to start recuperating.
That said, I still won't play this unless it's free like all of the other Battle.net stuff. Blizzard should just charge more initially for the game (like they're going to do anyways) and put ads for Pepsi or something in it. Have a monster that looks like a can of Mountain Dew. :(

Yes, you can pick from eight races: Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes(???), Night Elf, Orc, Troll, Tauren, and Undead.
The Gnomes look truly ridiculous, and I can't imagine anyone would choose that character unless they were just trying to get everyone in the game to kill them. Unless they'll have some incredibly useful attributes.
The races are then divided into the usual classes, like Rogue, Warlock, Warrior, Shaman, Paladin, etc. But each race has a different set of classes to choose from.
GNOMES. wtf. Couldn't they have picked a better race? Like Blood Elves, or Naga, or... Pandaren? :love

lol@gnomes :(
i guess it's a big stretch that nightelves would join some human alliance for any significant length of time. but if they did, they sure wouldnt tolerate sharing space with any other established race :O so.. make one up :o an make sure it's goofy and ridiculous. th evol side has a lock on coolness anyway.
after readin up onnit some, this game looks a lot like ffxi, minus a lot of the things that made ffxi really irritating. the death penalty, spending millions breaking useless stuff with your craft skills :o and i hope they wont force you to party for your entire post lvl12 life, because im an antisocial mmorpg person. :o and i hafta play a game that lets you be undead, so that's that :o

I guess I should clarify. I'd be willing to pay if the fee is something like $5/month, but if it's gonna end up being around $15, NO WAY JOSE. >:

I've actually been playing for the past week. They're having a Stress Test Beta until 9/9. I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed. Just the scale of the world they created is incredible and everything is very smooth thus far, with only a few minor glitches here and there. Any fan of WarCraft would be remiss not to get this.
My character is a Dwarf paladin, if anyone cares.

i don't have a source for this, but i'd heard quite some time ago that they were going to majorly undercut the other mmorpgs and charge like $6/mo.
oh - just found this tho
Will there be monthly fee to play the game?
Yes; however, we are still investigating our business model and have not yet determined what the fee will be.
