View Full Version : Grenada woes

So, my sister goes to med school on the island commonwealth of Grenada. That island got thoroughly ass-raped by Hurricane Ivan. 90% of the buildings were destroyed. This includes the jail and the mental facilities, so all the colorful characters a population of 100,000 has to offer are prowling the streets hungry and thirsty. My sister had someone with a gun demand her shoes. I don't think she gave them to him, though. She's now on campus, where things are suitably safe. Hopefully she'll be on a plane home by Monday.

Life is funny sometimes. I hear -rog-'s parents are there as well. A local news station came out to our house to interview my parents about how it all feels, and the segment ended up on Univisión. Since my dad is tite with the coach of the Colts, the announcers gave my sister well-wishes before the Patriots game last night on national tv.

I hope this builds lots of character for everyone.

Didn't we wage a whole friggin' war there?

Hope your sister is okay, though. I can imagine that caring for all those Grenadeans will bring her credibility. She saved a whole country!!!

Yay for Seth's sister!!!*

Yeah my parents are stuck in Grenada right now with no way out and their boat is pretty badly fucked up. They've been locking themselves in the boat at night and keeping themselves armed because of all the jail breaks, looting 'n shit going on. Fuck Florida, Grenada suffered far more than any other place in recent times. Their entire way of life has been practically wiped out. Their major source of income, gone.

Hope your sister is ok man.

See, Mod brings up a funny point. In the 80s, Reagan invaded the island because after the Empire renounced its sovereignty over it, the interim government decided it would be socialist and it invited the Cubans over to help out with some of the technicalities of nation-building. Reagan's excuse? There were American students and tourists whose lives depended on intervention.

Now that people are actually dying, the only major intervention that's come about has been from the British navy for the simple reason that Grenada used to stock English tea houses with nutmeg. Let me tell you, Conservativism makes perfectly good sense and it ROCKS. :-/

Eat my ass.
Ivan might not have hit Florida [yet](?) but those small little islands are getting slaughtered. Having people we know on those islands doesn't help.

I really don't care about a bunch of asshole 3rd world islands getting owned by a hurricane.

When Castro goes over to Grenada and rapes every man, women and child with the 6 foot penis of communism, then I might care. Well, I would laugh atleast.

Hitman, do yourself a big favor and shut the fuck up.

We recently heard from my parents (they still have a little battery life left on their phone) and the situation down there is extremely dire as a result of the hurricane, the prison break and looting. Local law enforcement hasn't been able to do much of anything. I was able to get in touch with Overseas Citizens Services (1-888-407-4747) and they said they are going to start evacuating people from Grenada to Port of Spain in Trinidad beginning tomorrow (Saturday). Problem is, people who want to evacuate have to make it to Point Salines and I have no way of getting in touch with my parents or the other people they're stranded with, nor do I know where Point Salines is in relation to where their boat is.

Currently, they've been locking themselves in their boat along with some other people who are stranded on boats that are practically piled up upon each other. Everybody there is everybody is really worried. There's now reports of looters with machine guns, and since the most advanced weaponry my parents and the other stranded boaters with them have is a couple of spear-guns, they really need to get out of there or have some military assistance pronto.

You don't need to edit/double-post for a single capitalized letter.

Anyways, hope your parents are okay, Mock. I also hope that they have seen Road Warrior, because from what I've seen on the new, that's what it looks like down there. Tell them to watch out for gay guys with mohawks on ATVs. :(

Thanks. I'm still waiting to hear back some more news on their situation. All I know is that they should evacuate if they can.

My sister got stuck on a plane to Trinidad, so perhaps your family could fight their way to the airport and maybe arrange to get on one of those flights, if they're still running. The military has been providing escorts for the students, and as aliens I would think that such would be extended to your family to get from place to place. Grenada's economy rests on spices and tourism, so the government would definitely take your folks' interests at heart. I don't know any useful numbers, but you might find some help at www.sgu.edu or http://www.valuemd.com/viewforum.php?f=33&sid=3dc9c295ae70e401337fecae150e918e .

Damn...That does suck, I'm a Floridian and honestly, I wish that hurricane had come through here so I could have gotten out of school...Not take out Islands...Blows my theory though, was thinkin whatever deities there were, were going out for Disney.

Anyways, I hope your parents make it out ok, and don't have to resort to cannibalism. Though, hunting down some loonies with a spear gun to get supplies would be awesome...
