I'm getting a PS2 for Christmas, and I need to know what to get.

So far I'm asking for...

Kingdom Hearts
Final Fantasy X
Devil May Cry 1 & 2
Onimusha 2 & 3
Viewtiful Joe

You see the trend in what kinds of games I like? Could you suggest what else is good out their in that same vein?

Also, where the hell can I buy Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. The only place I can find it is at my gamestop in the mall, but it has that "Playstation Greatest Hits" crap at the top. Can you get a box without that junk on it? If so, do the disks look any different, and are the programs different in any way?

I heard DMC 2 was a disappointment in that it didn't expand on the old one. But it's a sucky game too?

James
Sep 21st, 2004, 08:30 AM
DMC 2 was described as emabrassingly easy.

You can get GTA3 and Vice City as a pair for Greatest Hits, and starting with 3 and working your way up to San Andreas will help you get into the swing of things. Each game is HUGE, and each game is FUN. It'd suck to just jump to San Andreas, because then the previous games just aren't as fun to play, and you'll miss out on two great experiences.

VF4: Evolution ONLY came out as a Greatest Hits game. It was released for $20 because Sega is awesome like that. Besides, half the games on your list you'll only find as Greatest Hits unless you buy them used. I'd also suggest less intense fighting games, like the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Deception or Tekken 4. Just because VF4 can get VERY aggrivating with its steep learning curve.

I'd also suggest Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2. Since you seem to like RPGs and action/button mashers, these games are a great mix, with some wonderful features mixed in.

Other things worth note: Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Jak 2, Sly 2, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, and eventually Jak 3 and R&C 3. The first Jak & Daxter is pretty "by the books" in terms of gameplay, but it's fun, but you can still skip that. Sly and Ratchet are GREAT platformers (coming from someone who HATES them).

Skip anything with Final Fantasy in the title. They are all the same as previous installments.

HOWEVER, I HIGHLY reccomend ICO. That game just makes you feel in tune wiht the characters like no other game I have ever played. If you are into that kind of stuff, then definitely get them.

Another thing to make note of is the Legacy of Kain series. Skip over Blood Omen 2, is sucked. Just go with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (PS1) Soul Reaver (PS1) Soul Reaver 2 (PS2) and Legacy of Kain: Defiance (PS2). They all rock.

I have finished FF 5,6,7 and have watched people finish 8, and play through the more significant portion of x and x-2 and I can testify that things didn't get any better after 6, and 6 wasn't the best game every anyhow.

Get Rez, too.

Actually, I have spent a considerable amount of time with a few FF games, and I never saw any difference in them.

BASIC FF FORMULA REVEALED:

1. create reluctant angst-ridden teen lead character
2. create love interest
3. create generic cast of extras, but make one a different species
4. create large, overpowerful boss
5. send all characters through a generic action/love/loss story
6. lather, rinse, repeat.

I stand by my original statement.

Don't listen to the anti-FF crew. You either "get" the games, or you don't. They're enjoyable, plain and simple.

The same could be said about a lot of successful series. Legend of Zelda, for example. Even GTA.

The point is just because you don't like a series, doesn't mean it's BAD. And just because I want Boogie to laugh again - sad little man that he is - you either "get" the games or you don't. People will like the games, and others will not understand why.

Besides, now you're basically on the same side as Ernasty. So therefore, I automatically win this discussion. Ernasty's the Old Maid of the boards: You get stuck with it, you lose.

Well I liked the Armored Core series. Build yourself a nifty robot and go on missions with it.

Oh and James, I'm sorry I upset you. It's just that you've turned into a kapn/SSA hybrid all of a sudden, and I thought it was amusing. Either someone likes a game, or they don't. There's nothing to get, with or without quotes. Different strokes, and whathaveyou.

Besides, we're talking about an RPG series, here. They focus more on story than other gameplay elements like combat. I mean, if you can't pass a particular FF battle, you can just level up until you do. If you don't like the story in a FF game, why bother with the game itself?

Helm
Sep 22nd, 2004, 02:03 AM
James, I finished all these games, and whereas I didn't start to feel like a masochist until up to 8, I don't think there's something to 'get' at all. Also, I suspect I enjoyed 6 more because I was I think, 14 at the time? than because it's seriously a great game. The ideas were just fresh then. Now, they're not. The gameplay's more of the same, the characters superficial and the total plot and character development rivals a particularily adventurous episode of Friends. If you're a fag that cried when Sepiroth killed Tifa then I can see how you might think the FF series are OMG THE BEST SERIES OF GAMES EVER INVOLVING OMG I GET THESE GAMES but for anyone with half a brain the ff series are some of the most bland console rpgs by square.

Ah, the obligatory "Helms jumps across the forums looking for other areas to harass his target" method.

If you read anything I said, you would have noted that I did say they're not without their faults. But they didn't get all the way up to 12 (with numerous spin-offs) because they're "not worth playing."

Keep your aggression focused in one thread and stay there, like the caged animal you deserved to be treated as.

I myself find the spinoffs better than the actual series. FF Tactics? Love it, because it is different. Kingdom Hearts? Great game, if only because it is such an original idea executed almost perfectly. Final Fantasy? Been there, done that.

If it was Tifa that Sephiroth had killed, I might have cared about it ;<

FF1 was tedious and irritating, even moreso than the original Dragon Warrior. 2 I played for maybe 10 minutes before I realized it was the same game. 3 as well. 4 I have lots of good memories for, but upon a replay, I find it boring and stupid. 5 I liked, though didn't beat because it started getting monotonous. I tried to get back into FF6 a few years ago and it was just mind-numbingly dull. I seriously hate FF7. 8 was a little better because I could actually relate to maybe 12% of one of the characters, but it was really way too boring. 9 was probably the best I've played in recent memory, but nothing really special. 10 was boring, though I think they did a good job on the ending. 10-2 actually looks like a lot of fun, but I've already seen someone beat it so I don't wanna play it now. ;<

I also tried the old SNES Mario Kart recently because I've been saying that none of the new ones can compare to it, and upon playing it again found out that it sucks.

What the gay? I don't even think you as I target, James. We're discussing the FF series and I'm just saying that evethough I'm very much aware of the history of them and I've played most installments, that doesn't stop them from being very very mediocre at best in my oppinion. And that they've reached number 12 I attibute to the fact that bored pre-teens worldwide somehow relate to these cheezy love-stories in them. It's no wonder people think FF7 is omg the best evah and FF7 was the first of the series with a major love thing going on. To be seen on every FF game thereafter, also.
