Dammit I hate that quote. If it feels that good to be pessamistic then wear beartraps as shoes and claim "its cheaper than nikes!" Then have a kid and throw it out a plane to prove how unfair life is.
If you were born with lung cancer, then that would be dying from birth. If you were born with a knife in your stomach, that would also be dying from birth. But saying that you are dying from birth to a death 70 years later is just stupid. Especially since you are more living in your first twenty years than when you are in the womb. In fact, if you could call anything the opposite of dying, it would be puberty, so there is no way that as soon as you are born you start dying.
Maybe you ram one nail a day into your head, but for most people, they are living until they actually do start dying.
But anyway, it hurts to be alive because that is how you know you are alive. If it didn't hurt you would be a robot, and they... wait, they are alive too. So, I guess the answer is because you are human. Thank god I'm not, 'cause that would suck.

Life is suffering.
The origin of suffering is egoistic craving and attachment.
There is a way to the cessation of suffering.
This Way is the Eightfold Path:
Right Understanding;
Right Thinking;
Right Speech;
Right Attitude;
Right Livelihood;
Right Effort;
Right Mindfulness;
Right Concentration.

It hurts to be alive because of the millions of stretching nerves cells within our multiple systems of tissue, growing weary over time and catching other foreign debris thus causing us pain and most certainly death.

Yes! Yes! Put her in the Iron Maiden. What it means it that your cells ultimately have a limited amount of times they can replicate before they start to degenerate and reproduce poorly no matter whether you have a dilibilitating disease or not. In short, death is inevitable. Pessimistic but truthful, it depends on what you do with the information. If you take the information in stride and decide that your're going to do your best in a limited amount of time and be good to people, then it's not so bad. It's those procrastinating Christians that think that they have time in the afterlife to make up for their lazy\iness and misdoings that really stick in my craw.

Know what else hurts? That thing? With the clamps? And the twisting? and the waiting and holding? And then the scoutmaster says he's going out for cigarettes? And there's no clock? So you have no way of knowing if he's really been gone for hours and hours or if it just seems like he's been gone for hours and hours? And then when you come to the policeman just keeps asking you what you id with it? And he says he'll get you a glass of water if you just tell him what you did with it? And you're so thirsty your tongue is swollen, but you don't know wht it is and you tell him you don't know what it is and he just stares at you for like five minutes and then asks you what you did with it again?
That hurts.
