so i've had a few of these threads before.
people have started paying me for stuff so i started trying to do stuff strictly design and un-arty. i futzed around a bit and fell onto something i thought i could run with for while. i took some light pictures, scanned my sketches and here we are:

i think you have no idea what art is.

You obviously havn't been paying attention then.

Spectre X

I don't like it because it looks like a bunch of photoshop filters and other effects thrown together to achieve an effect that isn't too interesting to me anyway. :(

FartinMowler

I agree with Spectre X. I've seen similar stuff :/

glowbelly
Nov 4th, 2004, 09:32 AM
you've seen similar stuff that is subpar.

you've seen similar stuff that was done in 5 minutes, that took no thought and looks the same to you because you don't have the tools to see the difference between chaotic order and just plain chaotic.

rez takes time with his images and if you had the eye for it, you'd be able to tell. those aren't all filters. those are layers upon layers of manipulated photos that are worked together to form a continuity that not only spans across a single image but encapsulates his work as an entire body.

you don't have to like it, but to say it's shoddily done just proves that you have no idea what you are looking at.

Spectre X

I never said that it was shoddily done. I said that it looked like a bunch of filters and other effects thrown together. They can be thrown together very well.

And I didn't know that it's a bunch of photos, I'm sorry for being a dumb blind fuck. :(

I was wondering how exactly he does these. I think they're completely gorgeous, especially that second one.

Rez

i cant say that not a single filter was used, but since i rarely go in the filters section anyway, i can definately say whatever you're thinking is wrong.

these are sketches i made. laid on top of photos and altering color. if you want to pin me for laziness, go after the mirror option that i used, but you wont find much for filters here.

guys, it's all design work. i dont even call this art because art goes past looking pretty and makes statements or represents life and science and ideas. this is just me going over my obsession of light, color, and fluidity. when i start threads like these i only call it art if i really think it is, usually you'll see "new shit" or "new stuff."

it jumps to 17 responses and all it turns out to be is fartin being a bitch.

thanks glow :)

Can you make one that doesn't look like you folded a piece of paper?. I think that is what is distracting to me. I know I'm a prick.

that was the thing though. i got tired of making a bunch of abstracted images according to what i thought loked good and decided what i could do if i made things a lot more symmetrical than i was used to. just something new for me.

That black and white one makes me cream each time I see it. And the second one is awesome after you look more into it--I thought it was a simple photograph at first. Lovely awesome stuff.

the black and white one isnt very large at all, just something i did as part of a contest to raise money for charity. there isnt much to it, but it donated ten bucks :)
the second one, i made an 11x14 print of it, framed it, and gave it to my girlfriend.

the last one is last night's work, i'm pretty proud of it.

These are great. It's a shame 'cause UK doom band Esoteric had some pictures up 4 years ago with the exact overdeveloped-then-mirrored swirly patterns, but they don't anymore and I wanted to show you.

I like the orange cube one. It reminds me of a huge workstation or something.

Actually this one might work better because it breaks up the pattern on the overlayed photograph nicely and makes this even less a 'photo over a photo' piece and more of an abstract piece.

Rez
Jan 6th, 2005, 05:01 PM
that's a cool way of seeing it, i think i'd agree, too... i thought the fact that it'd be a little difficult to distinguish what one of the photos would be would set off that impression of one atop another, but i guess not.

thanks.

that's quite a way to take a doodle and make something that looks really complex and deliberate. Good work, on the technical level, shame on you otherwise.

Rez

well, that was just me screwing around. my design class is coming up so that means i just kick off on shit that's laying around the hard drive. most things i do actually have an idea behind them.

and i also think there's *some* level of integrity behind it. i'm not going to like it or put it out if it isnt what i want to do. i never finish stuff that's strictly for other people, i dont make enough money to do that, for now i do it for myself and know there's a few who'll like it.

now i like this one, i feel it enough to lend some imagination as to what it is and it reminds me of different stuff i do. there *is* a connection, it's just not as strong as it usually is, but it's not detached

Wow, I take back anything I said about this not interesting me earlier and about it looking bad in any way. I guess just the light and everything in the earlier pieces kinda threw me off course.

This stuff is rad. :love

i was hoping this inspiration woulda popped up while i was on break. :p

i've got 6 piles of homework that i'm infuriated at neglecting and i've been working on this nonstop for about 2 weeks... i need sleep and get out more.

six finished images in two weeks... i dont get it. i think it's very unhealthy (i've skipped a couple classes, even), but i've been dry for half a year (not counting the odd image here and there) and so i'm going to RIDE this bitch to ruin.
