If you could include consciencious objection in your taxes. Like, I think Thoreau was just a cheap-skate for not paying his, but what if we could specify that we want the money we pay to be allotted anywhere except the war in Iraq, et cetera? It wouldn't make any difference unless such a huge portion of the country has such leanings, in which case it SHOULD make a difference.

Well the way the system is set up, our conscientious objection to politicians choices in taxes is supposed to be voting for a certain politician, so in a way it's in-built.
*Many persons have attempted to argue this to the Supremes and that's their answer*
If you're asking if we received a ballot every year with a list we could check off saying "I don't want money to go to this" that might be interesting b/c all the money saved not going to that would probably go to administrative fees just to implement that voting.

It makes the system too unreliable.

People would have to be smarter and thus better educated. I'd be scared to put so much more power into the hands of marketers. Think of all the boring, regulatory jobs no one thinks about, like mine inspectors (I'm getting that from a recent article I'd post if I could remember where I saw it...) that would cease to exist for at least the first year...
Wait... I like this idea.

If you were self-sufficiently living out in the wilderness what, exactly, would you be paying taxes on?

That was a bit out of the blue...
My Guess: The privledge of being able to do so unmolested.
Basically, it's protection money.

Just charge me a carnivore tax and I'll pay the government in pelts and back-strap.

Wasn't Walden technically city property or something like that?
