View Full Version : I have a brain tumor :(
Big McLargehuge
Oct 22nd, 2004, 08:52 PM
I went to the opthamologist yesterday because i recently lost my periphreal vision. The doctor saw that my eyes were in perfect shape and suggested i get a CT scan. It showed that i have a rather large pituitary tumor that has grown to a size that it is putting pressure on my optical nerve.
There is a 99% chance that the tumor is benign, but it will still have to be either shrank using radiation or removed. The tumor has apparently been there for a long time and i have manifested all the symptoms associated with acromeglia (over production of growth hormone due to a pitutitary tumor, Andre the Giant yo) big hands, big feet, big head, and my Herman Munster-esque facial features.
I am going to see a neurosurgeon monday and my doctor thinks that there is a 90% chance that he will decide surgery is the way to go.
Well that's my story :(

Good luck with the tumor.... oh and when they remove it, see if they'll let you keep it afterwards... I mean they should let you kepp it, it's technically yours, you should be able to keep it, name it, put it in a cool jar... at least, that's what I would try and do.

I got an MRI today and if i can't get my parents stupid computer to stop fighting with their stupid scanner i will post a pic :0, it is about the size a a walnut (a normal pituitary gland is the size of a pea). Oh and they took all sorts of x-rays and are gonna put them up on a lightboard in the middle of the hospital reserved for "interesting cases". They also found that the tumor has wrapped around the cartoid (sp?) atery. This complicates the surgery and it is now urgent and can't be put off.
Thanks all for the good wishes.

A while back someone asked what the largest tumor was.
It was a 200+lbs one that no doctor would dare remove due to it being located near the woman's spinal cord I believe. But eventually someone accepted and after several hours of surgery and her losing over 6 times the amount of blood in her body, they finally removed it.
Why the Hell have people been saying good luck? Since when was being a doctor something to do with luck? It's skill, they didn't spend however long they spent learning to be a doctor to flip a coin.
Rant over, hope they succeed, even though I am sure they will!

Wishing "good luck" is for obvious reasons. Up until a certain time, it's been bad luck in whatever the reason for wishing a person "good luck" is/was for. Skill, via the medical profession in this case, has little to do with "good luck."
In fact, if one has to wish a surgeon "good luck," one had better find another fucking doctor real quick. Preferably before the first cut. >:

For all the morons who can't be bothered to look it up (i.e. me), what is a benign tumor?
I assume it means it isn't infectious or whatever the word is.

Benign means its not expanding/attacking other cells I presume, as the opposite is malignant which spreads and grows.

Well my surgeon disagrees, i have surgery on the 9th of November. The surgeon i got is one of the leading experts on pituitary tumors (he has done over 1000 of these surgerys), and feels optimististic that he can get 80-90 percent of the tumor on the first go. He then will treat what remains with radiation therapy unless it is too big, in which case he will try another surgery. I have a 60% chance of regaining the vision that i lost,
I also have a 30 percent chance of becoming infertile. The worst thing is that i have to drop out of school for this semester, and i will prolly have to give up a job i just got hired for. After the surgery i will spend about 4 days in the hospital and then be discharged, i can resume normal activity after 2 or 3 weeks, but will not be allowed to blow my nose, sneeze, cough, or lift anything over 5 lbs for 3 months.

I can remember going through surgery and radiation and not needing the pain pills as much as I needed the nausea medication. But that was five years ago. I think medicine has come a long way in that short of time.
They ought to keep you on the pain meds until the stitches are out shouldn't they?
The pain pills are for the headaches, i lost a fair amout of cerebral spinal fluid and that causes very painful headaches untill your body can replace it. I don't have any stitches, unless you count the sutures in my stomach from the fat graft.

You could prolly just go see your family practitioner and he will tell you it is a cyst or whatever and drain it or something.
I actually went to an opthamologist because my first symptom was loss of vision he sent me in for a CT scan because my eyes are fine and he suspected a problem with my optical nerve.
