Very interesting, from a pure programming perspective.

He gets it wrong, though, when he talks about how compilers could never get more efficient ASM than if you did it by hand. There's a reason why next to no one in industry programs extensively in ASM... because compilers ARE better. No one has written a compiler for the 6502 that takes into account all of the NES's quirks.

It's still cool, though. :(

It's been a long while since programming classes, but I think that's debateable. I notice you said "extensively" which, to me, indicates that folks are still writing more efficient subroutines is machine language.

But I'll agree with you that the kid is just being an assembly snob. :P

Dumbasses. Compilers are nothing but a collection of assembler routines that have been written BY people. The point is moot. Moot, dammit!

MOOT!

The point is moot, dammit. It's moot because everything is written by people, so you're argueing whether something written by people is better than something written by people which is a discussion you can't have. Cause it's MOOT.

Oh yeah, there's still stuff that should be done in ASM. Really low-level device drivers, portions of the OS kernel, video drivers, certain graphics routines, stuff for embedded systems... but most of the time, you'd just write the same stuff in C and have it compile into something better than what you could have written.
