It's not that I think that he didn't do it but is getting the death penalty based purely on circumstancial evidence rare? They neither have cause of death, eyewitnesses to the actual murder or physical evidence directly linking him to the crime.

Yes. I don't doubt that he did it. Although it would be kooky and fun for them to 'find' some evidence that proves him innocent...a year after he's executed.

I heard there was some pregnant hispanic lady who was murdered by her boyfriend around the same time as the Peterson murder, and her body was dumped in the very same river, and yet, no media frenzy around her.

"White guy kills wife" Isn't a real tear-jerker :/

They can put a spin on any story to boost ratings. I think the minority angle would actually have worked out better. "Hispanic Woman, 9 Months Pregnant Killed in Cold Blood by Deranged Asian Husband". I'm not sure if he was Asian, but that headline would sell papers.
