View Full Version : YOUR MOST VALUABLE COMIC(S)

I collected comics when I was a kid, because I was under the impression that they'd all become worth millions of dollars in 20 years. The vast majority of my comics I bought from 1993-1994, most of them were from "Collector's Packs" from costco. I'd also go to comic shops and buy random first issues, and most any comic that had a shinny or holographic cover. I really didn't know what I was doing. I didn't read comics, except for stuff like Ren and Stimpy, and "funny" comics like that.
Last month I spent a weekend at home, and I looked up every comic book I had online, to find that they were mostly worthless. I'd spent 20 dollars buying Ren and Stimpy #1, only to find it's now worth something like 5 bucks. But here are some things I found to actually be worth some money:
Second printins of random old Marvel comics - Sears and Toys 'R' Us had a package of "vintage" comics that you could buy for like 20 bucks. My mom got them for me in a Sears Catalogue for christmas one year. Nothing in the Sears ad said anything about them being reprints, so I thought they were the real deal. I spent the next few hours looking up each comic, to find they were worth hundreds of dollars each. Then I opened one up, saw an ad for a Super Nintendo game, and realized they were reprints. I was so mad, I tried to get my mom to sue Sears for false advertising, rereading the ad for any indication that they were reprints. I was like 10 years old at the time. Ironically, these comics are now worth more than all my other comics, they are now worth something like 10-15 bucks each, and it was a pack of like 20 comics.
The other big comics I have are two Popeye Comics from 1937. These I got from my Grandpa when he heard I was collecting comics. If they were in better condition, they'd be worth about 1000 bucks each, I could probably get 1000 bucks for both of them.

I used to have the 1st issue of spawn in the long log ago but I lit it on fire during a camping trip. So now the only comics I have that may be worth anything are Turok issue 2 and Nijak issue 2, The justiceleague Europe annual Bloodlines( with the genisis of Lionheart), Flash Annual Bloodlines (The genisis of Argus), Superman annual Bloodlines (the genisis of Loose cannon)
I know a friend who has The first ten issues of the Headmasters wqich is, if I'm not mistaken the original transformers.

yeah i collect comics i used to have piles of silverage stuff early amazing spidey but sold most of them all so i could buy a mini disc sort of a spur of the moment thing it was my biggest ever regret the most expensive single issue i held onto i think was amazing spidey 300 the 1st venom and the 90s were the dark ages of comics nothing from that period is a good investment if you think of it that way im more likely now though to buy comics just to read like milk and cheese, gotham knights, preacher etc

Honestly? Selling comics is a fool's game at the moment. Right now you could go into Canada and find hobby shops that sell comics from all the way back to 1986 for less than $1 CDN. Back in 2002 when I was traveling I was able to get most of the WHAT IF? series (volumes 1 and 2) for less than $20 CDN and they're resting in my closet until comics go by the wayside in a few more years and become a true collector's item.

The sad truth is there is a HA-YUGE difference between what a comic is 'worth' and what you can get for it.
If you want to make some cash of your old books and aren't inclined to half onto them, e-bay may be the best way to go, as you can list them for about 1/2 what the comic price guide does and hope someone new to collecting get's excited.
X-Men 94, first regular issue featuring the 'new' X-men that appeared in Giant Size X-men 1. In fairly bad condition.
Oh, and I have elfquest number 1, that may be worth a fair amount ito some huge homo fag collector out there.
I also have two of the early issues of Raw Magazine that featured the serialized chapters of Maus by Art Speigelman. I believe those are sought after.

I'm not sure what "value" really is. I have a Daredvil #1 in so-so shape, and Uncanny X-men #1 in so-so shape, and Showcase 22-24 and Green Lantern #1, all in decent to almost ratty.
Problem is, I could probably get more money quicker for an Ultimate Spider-Man #1 these days. Comics are not a game to get into for value- it's way too easy to get burned unless you start out with and stick with high ticket items ("investment grade" copies of key books).
I HAD a couple copies of X-men 94 and Giant Size #1 in VF or so pass through my hands years ago, but they weren't valued at anything close to what you see them going for now... if only I'd known.

I'm not really looking to sell my comics, I was just curious after 10 years time to see if they appreciated in value at all. and I don't need anybody telling me getting into comics is a fools game. I was 10.
I'm kind of thinking of selling all my worthless comics just to free-up space. Maybe putting them up on ebay in a lot. or something.

I have the complete Scud: The Disposable Assassin series first print all tucked away in little protective sleeves somewhere. The only comics I really like, which is probably the reason they're the only ones I own. Probably not worth anything though :<.
