how should you tip your bartender?
the other night, me and my 2 friends were at a rock show, and between the 3 of us, tipped the bartender over ten bucks. then when i went for the next round, i got a gilt trip from the bartender saying "you guys havent tiped me all night". so i tipped him again, we all drank our beers and left.
i was going to complain to the mangment, but then i thought "maybe i am a sucky tipper".
so i ask, how do you tip your bartender?
do you just give him a big tip the first time you order? or do you just give him a buck every time you order?

20% tip, or more. Don't rip them off. Not that I read the enitre message, but yeah, first impressions are nice.

because here, in the us, most servers and bartenders only make about $2.00 an hour. they rely on tips to live.
on the other hand, i would have never complained about someone not tipping me. i would just take an extra long time to serve them or make their drinks weak as hell.
the general rule for bartenders is that if you are running a tab to tip 15%-20%. if you are going beer by beer you can leave change or a dollar for every drink you have.
as ziggy said, you don't have to tip, but if you don't, i wouldn't expect to get any kind of great service.

If I don't get "great service" first, I won't tip, and I rarely go above 10% (unless it's a hot chick am I right guys???).
I've just taken my drink and walked away from the bar because the bartender was an asshole.

First time I went to 'Merica, the bar tender in the first bar we went to came and spoke to us after a few beers and said ' You're English arent you?' and we said 'er...yes?' -he said he knew we were because we weren't tipping. I apologised for our mistake and smiled warmly as I left some counterfeit english notes in a small tray near him.
Interestingly (or perhaps boringly), we don't tend to tip bar staff in the UK, mainly because they make more money than their yankee counterparts. HOWEVER, we do tip taxi drivers, barbers, chimney sweeps, abortionists, priests etc

In Montreal they are very militant about tipping, much moreso than the rest of Canada. I ordered a beer at this bar and it came to $4.25. All I had was a $5 bill and a couple of $20 bills, so I gave her the 5. She gave me a strange look and said "Umm the beer costs $4.25...". At first I didn't understand what the problem was but when I did I was so disgusted I just said "Ohhhh... ok. So you owe me 75 cents." I've never gone back there again!! :explode

As I'd worked at restaurants all through high school, I know exactly what you're talking about. That being said, I know exactly what constitutes good or bad service. If someone takes an incredibly long time to serve me in a place I'd never been before (because I realize one can be known, after a while, to be a bad tipper in a familiar place) they are just not going to get a tip, regardless of the low wage. I didn't choose their occupation for them but I did choose to do into their establishment. I'm not talking about being waited on hand and foot (I realize how busy things can get), but just to be treated in a fairly timely manner and politely. I've been in places where the bar maid stared daggers into me for the simple request "When you get a chance, can I get a LaBatt here, please?" when she happened to be on the phone talking to who knows whom. I wasn't eavesdropping but I could tell by her demeanor that the call definitely wasn't business-related; therefore, no future tips for her. Is that so wrong? Also, your earlier reference to watered-down drinks is one of the principal reasons why I usually order beer.

I never tip. People are paid to do their jobs and unless they're really good at what they do I see no reason in giving them extra money.
Edit: Oh, I tipped the guy that started my tattoo even though some of the lines had to be fixed when I got it finished :/

i only poured weak drinks if the person was a total cock and never tipped. every person who walked into my bar got a stiff drink as their first. i figured that if you start them off with a strong one, you have a better chance of them coming back to you and tipping you, especially if you aren't the only person working the bar.
i always tip. the only time i don't tip is when the person serving me is god awful, insulting or never serves me.

If people want a tip so bad they should just add that to the total of the drink. but yes I agree, you should tip based on the level of service. If it sucks, they get a dollar.

I'm pretty good with the tipping. If what I get is just a few bucks, I leave a dollar. Larger orders, I do the math and figure out 15%.
The better the service, the better the tip. I've stiffed servers before, but thats for unbelievably crappy service.

I don't get how anyone can be giving an extra dollar or more when it's like 4 bucks a beer (here in Canada anyway).
felix_tibs
Feb 16th, 2005, 12:40 AM
2 bucks for the first drink, one buck there after. 1 dollar per drink. None of the that 15% shit unless you got a tab. How can people not fucking tip the bartender. I mean, I know its not like he had to do much to get the beer from the fridge/tap to you but still, a buck wont break you.

I'm a bartender, and I wouldn't serve any of you fags.
Here's some tips on tips so they're less chance of you pissing of my drink dispensing brethren.
1. The server is being nice to you only cause she wants your tips. Don't try to pick her up. Especially with a big tip. Achimp, you seem like the type to brag about the waitress flirting with you. Now you know.
2. Tip big once, at the beginning, or tip with the change each time. Or don't tip at all you cheap fuck. I don't work in a restaraunt, so I don't know what flies in there.
3. Don't try and draw my attention to tipping me, I really couldn't give a fuck. Nothing is more publicy embarrassing than fags who sit and make a big display of tipping. Yeah, yeah you're a baller, high roller baby. Great. Fag.
4. Plan it out a little in advance. People who get all flustered over how much to tip look worse than people who don't tip at all. And they hold up the line like fags.
5. If you don't like the service, than don't come back. But don't feel to special about it, we are over capacity almost every weekend, and you won't be missed. Fag.
Yeah, I'm an asshole.

That kinda depends on how much you like dealing with obnoxious drunk fuckers, and on how much your establishment let's a customer get away with before 86in em.
I'd think bartending is either the best or worst depending on the specific bar. But that's not really different than any other kind of job.

Service jobs in general are stressful and irritating which is why I didn't say it was an easy job, just comparatively easy to, say, waitering, or working at a fast food franchise; You don't have to rely on anyone else to get your work done, the bulk of the difficulty is in memorization, and in some places there isn't even a paper trail.

The last time I was served by a bartender was at a milk bar, but we decided to just leave because tipping the bartender might be considered a little insensetive in those circumstances.

But, then again, there are accountability issues because some drunken driver killed someone after leaving the bar you work at because there were over an hundred people at the bar and you can't keep your eye on every stupid, drunken bastard. Has anyone been sued for over-serving Big Macs? ... strike that ... that's probably pending in the court system as we speak.

Wow, Eric the expert, you couldn't be anymore wrong. But I'm sick of defending this topic and my profession. Half of the people on this board won't be legal to go to a bar for at least 7 years and the other half don't belong in a bar, period.

Seriously dude, how much bartending experience do you really have? Work in a club, tavern, restaraunt, all of the above? You haven't fucking defended SHIT. You've just insulted anyone who said bartending isn't hard without saying one fucking thing in the way of a counter-argument. Tell us why it's so hard.
