Nickelodeon is named after Earl H. Nickelodeon. He was a former head of the Ku Klux Klan. To this day, only pure white Americans run the station.

Well, that would explain why they run the Cosby Show now, wouldn't it? ;)
But I'd be lying if I didn't mention that Kenan and Kel made me laugh a few times. Of course, that show had some really funky problems with either lead losing their clothing to a horrifying extent or some really obvious homosexual stuff going on. I mean, what kind of Nick show would show a fatass like Kenan running home with his already stretched out shirt trying to cover his minuscle package? UGH!!

I'd agree that Salute Your Shorts was probably the best but a close runner up would have to be Legends of the Hidden temple, just because I loved watching the stupid kids run through that maze,/building thing and miss the relic thing 100000000 times in a row. Then get caught by the "guards" and scream. Saw one girl cry once, best episode ever.

*= (here's where I'm gonna sound like a News Nerd) Viacom, the company that owns Nick, also owns the new TNN. Nickelodeon relinquished rights of R&S to Viacom, the parent company, and Viacom handed them down to TNN. TNN then, essentially, gave the rights to Ren and Stimpy back to Spumco (JOY!!) and so NEW!! Ren and Stimpy eps will be shown on TNN starting this summer.

Nah, if anything ruined Nick it was definitely Rugrats and the hypocritical stance that toilet humor was only funny if it was in a cartoon that pandered to parents. Spongebob (and Invader Zim) were and are good shows simply because it's manically funny. I can't understand why anybody would bother with Rugrats at all, personally.

Yes, that means PANTERA, the SAME Pantera everyone knows and should love, played for an episode of SpongeBob, which, I might add, I caught on accident. I was flipping channels and noticed the stupid SpongeBob theme but then I saw "With Special Guest:" and the PANTERA logo.

Hehe, never heard of the new ren and stimpy, that sounds great. But what about that viacom thing? Doesnt MTV own nick and stuff?
PS misinformed man, I take it your name means your know nothing, I'll just straighten it out:
I'm not sure if this is the WHOLE truth, but here ya go. Nickelodeons were old machines in stores, just like those candy machines we see in grocery stores. Back before TV, they put a film strip in the thing, and you could watch it through a hole. Like an ancient style of of those wierd contraptions where you looked into the box and cranked the thing, and it showed soundless mickey mouse things in it. But this you put a cent in and it pleased the kiddies with the high-tech picture thingy.
So, whatever owned nick thought "Hey, back in the day a nickelodeon was a stupid thing that moms could use to shut thier kids up". Therefor, nickelodeon now has bad shows t& stuff that moms use to shut thier kids up. Just stick it in thier face and they pipe down before you kill them.
As for my list:
1. Ren and Stimpy
This show was just too funny, and they said mildly bad words in the early eps to keep us entertained. Too bad Nickelodeon noticed.
2. Wild and Crazy Kids
YEEHAW. Donny Jeffcoat and Omar Gooding (recognize the name? He was Cuba Gooding Jr's bro. DANGIT OMAR MADE HIM WHAT HE IS!). Did you know that the redhead was only there for one season because she was really like...30? She jsut dressed and loked like a teen. She got pregnant!
3. That zany shorts camp thing (I keep thinking "Eat my shorts" and I cant remember the name
Donkey Lips owned. Remember when budnick and the one with the yellow hair pretended to vomit so they didnt go on a trip. They had like ketchup and corn in there. That show was pure brilliance

Cyber: About Viacom...
I assume you know about 'parent companies' (Don't fret, I'm not mocking you, it's just essential to know what one is to understand the relationship)
Viacom is the parent company for Nick, TNN, and yes, MTV. MTV does indeed own Nickelodeon, but both answer to Viacom.
It's sort of like this (every level up establishes ownership)
VIACOM
/ \
TNN MTV
\
Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon bought the rights for Ren and Stimpy from Spumco (I won't explain this, I assume you already know) and ran it into the ground. Well, fast forward a few years. Nickelodeon relinquished the rights to the characters to Viacom, their parent company, meaning Nickelodeon still has the right to air the old R&S episodes if they choose to, because the old episodes are indeed owned by Nickelodeon, however, since Viacom handed the rights to the characters back to TNN, only TNN (or whoever they sublet the rights to, say an animation company) may make new episodes of Ren and Stimpy.
TNN is planning a new block of adult-oriented animation programming in Summer 2003, and Ren and Stimpy happened to be one of the projects TNN was into. (This following part is my own speculation) TNN knew that without the original creators of Ren & Stimpy, which is Spumco, that the old fans who might be interested would shit all over it, and John K. himself has expressed interest in reviving the series. (personal speculation over) So TNN 'sublet' the rights back to Spumco (meaning Spumco now once again owns the characters it created, but still must ask for TNN's approval to merchandise the characters) and now, Spumco is working on 6 new eps. of R&S for Summer 2003.
If memory serves, they plan on showing all 52 (I believe) original episodes of R&S (which is technically legal, since Viacom owns Nickelodeon and doesn;t have to pay a DIME) and the next night they will show the first of 6 new eps. of Ren and Stimpy.
Sorry that was so long. Hope that helps.
PS The mildly bad words will be a little more wilder. Think "Adult Swim" :)

ShanghaiOrange
Mar 22nd, 2003, 03:56 PM
Space Cases was like Star Trek: Voyager for kids. It was around '96 I think, which was probably the last good year for Nickelodeon. Angry Beavers was pretty good, but once that show started, it was the beginning of the end for Nick.
Personal favorites:
The Adventures of Pete and Pete
Rocko's Modern Life (Best Nick toon by far)
Most of the shows were seem alot better now then they were then, just because of the whole nostalgia factor, but those two were and still are two of the best shows ever. I wish I got Noggin. :(

Whaaaaaat? No mention of INSPECTOR GADGET?? Wtf? *points to avatar*
I don't care what you say, inspector gadget owned. I always wanted one of those computer book things. Now I can just get a laptop, I guess.
1. Inspector Gadget
2. You can't do that on television - Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there an episode where one of the kids shits in the bathtub? Pure classic, and so politically incorrect. Which is something you wouldn't see on Nick these days with all the paranoia of how television affects kids and all that shit. I mean, look at us, we're normaly developed adults now...aren't we?
3. Ren and Stimpy - I saw a commercial on tnn the other day about them showing new episodes of Ren and Stimpy, at first I thought they were just going to show "rare" episodes or what have you...but they're actually going to make NEW ren and stimpys? If they are, that would be maximum ownage. I just hope they don't ruin it.
4. Roundhouse - shut up, I liked it :P
And finally....
5. Bannanaman - Just because some of my earliest memories is me sitting in the house with my dad and watching Bananaman and Danger mouse :)

It makes me sad to think that the great t.v. network that had such treasures mentioned above me, has complete and utter crap on it now. I was watching t.v. one time and I turned on Nickelodeon and I saw the worst thing they ever thought up of... Pick Boy. Do you know how scared I felt when I saw some 22 or over guy in spandecks? I haven't seen the commercial for the new ren and stimpy shows, when they suppose to start?
Supposedly, sometime between next month and August, on the New TNN which is about to turn into SPIKE, the first cable channel for MEN.
They're already playing commercials for it, where they make fun of the fact that John K. is back in control again by having John's face on a video monitor and hinting oh-so-obviously that he has control of it again. On the plus side, it will definitely make it great to watch again, and this time they have carte blanche more or less, because they're allowing them to gear R&S towards adults.

Some black family. There was a Dad, a Mom, the oldest sister Melanie, the oldest brother Alfie, and the youngest brother DeeDee (LOL).
Alfie had a best friend named Goo (Milton) who had a crush on Melanie, and Melanie knew but he hated him anyway.
DeeDee had two best friends, Harry (the geeky white kid) and the other black kid who I can't remember his name. He had a sister that was best friends with Melanie and hated Goo too.
The only episodes I remember are Goo cutting DeeDee's hair so that it looked like some guy on TV, then he ended up getting his head shaved. There was one where Goo lost his memory by hitting his head. There was one where DeeDee ran away, and there was one with a bully at school the was a girl.

Excuse me folks, but Global GUTS kicked major fucking ass. Not becuase it was actually a good show or anything, but for one reason. MIKE O' MALLEY!! This guy was the man, because he got so pumped up about the kids who played the dumb little games. He called them incredible athletes numerous times and would scream at the top of his lungs incessantly. It is so funny to watch it now.
is that the one where they had climb the smokin mountain at the end?

Anything Endless Mike rules. He was the best character aside from Artie. I saw the actor who played Endless Mike in some vw commercial. True talent wasted with that one. :(

The Agro Crag was great becasue every epsode they tried to make it seem more dangerous and scary. Mo says- "well mike we lost a kid yesterday and had to hire sherpas to go find him, oh and 2 days ago 5 kids fell to their deaths. And this week one of the temple gaurds from legends of the hidden temple will bludgeon kids to death with a crowbar."

You Can't Do That On Television was always my favorite.
:( - Holy shit, that show is still on TV! YCDTOTV was produced in my hometown, and I used to watch it in its original run - Saturday morning, hungover and in between puking sessions. By the way, in case you haven't noticed, singer Alanis Morissette was a cast member for a couple years.

You Can't Do That on Television had better put out all 143 episodes on 21 discs in the next month or so or I will kill myself. >:

PS The mildly bad words will be a little more wilder. Think "Adult Swim" :)
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but Jesus Tapdancing Christ the new Ren and Stimpy sucks. It's all a bunch of gay jokes that would only amuse a few 13 year olds who just had their first wet dreams.

Yeah, Pete and Pete was great. Remember when Artie and Pete fought the ocean. Or the episode with inspector 27. Good times.
It was inspector 34 as I recall.
Pete and Pete is the best show on t.v. period.

Jeez, strange memories on this lonely night in Anchorage.
Obscure references aside, I recall the hey-day of Nick with relish. I remember how my parents would FORBID me to watch Ren & Stimpy. Of course, they also forbade Beavis & Butthead, huhuh, and we all know how well that went, don't we buttmunch? Huhuh.
Shit, I remember I watched Nick all the damn time. Until Cartoon Network came along. Now honestly, Nick had nothing to compete with Thundarr the Barbarian, or Centurions, or Galdar. The only thing they did have was Looney Tunes, and eventually Cartoon Network was like "What the hell are you doing with that? GIMME!"
Wow, nostalgia is hitting me upside the head like the dank odor of Gak, remember that stuff? Smelled like someone tried to perfume horseshit and fuse it with silly putty and sell it to kids.
