For those of you that received the email... yes we were hacked and it's obvious that the forums are gonna have to be upgraded. I only hope that we won't lose a lot of the posts/accounts here in the process.

What sucks is that I installed a lot of mods 'n what not to get the forums looking nice like this... not sure how that's gonna work after we've upgraded. :x

Yes it needs to be upgraded to prevent future hassles like this. And no the software is free so it won't cost me money... just time.

I don't think you need to get new bb software, just limit acess to folders and things as well as applying any new security patches as soon as possible. There are so many viruses and things going around now a days its going to happen.

I know keeping websites up and running smoothly is a pain in the neck and despite this hacker gaining access to your board, they obviously liked the forums because it looks like most things remain intact.

Who cares what the boards look like for a while? Installing the new boards is as simple as deleting the old stuff, uploading the new stuff and running the upgrade script. You keep everything that's in the database, and your host doesn't get pissed off at you for running old shit.

As for the update, you can take a backup, install the new forums and restore the backup, so you wont have to loose anything at all.

If you have a list of the phpBB modules you have installed you could probably talk to someone that is familiar with phpBB and they could determine whether or not they will affect the newer versions.

For the most part, the older versions of phpBB only need a few more slight tweaks to not be succeptible from the latest exploits. It's kind of dumb though, because the developers added some features that simply don't get used and those are what is exploitable.

A good way to determine if you're going to need to do any serious changes/reinstalls is to set up a beta site or beta forums, export the SQL with all the posts (minus the "General" and "Philosophy" forums since they are the largest, though the version of PHPBB you have might not let you export by forum, so you'd just have to manually remove the tables from the text file) and then load it into the beta forum. Assuming the images are hardlinked, you'd be okay, but even if they aren't, you don't need them to know whether or not the rest of the functionality is there.

Or you could just use IPB since it is generally more secure than PHPBB.
