...or are videogames one hell of a lot shorter these days? I finally decided to catch up with the times and rent some current gen games (Enter the Matrix and True Crime: Streets of LA), and man were they short. I beat each of them in less than 24 hours and managed to get a decent amount of sleep that same night. Same thing with the splinter cell games. What's up with that? Am I just renting all the impossibly short games by some crazy coincidence? :(

Some games nowadays are ridiculously short, but I think it's more the difficulty level which has gone down. As games have become more complex, they've become more about the play experience than the difficulty.

I think it's just that you spend less time looking at a badly rendered ...say, chair, and sit there for twenty minutes wondering what the fuck it's supposed to be.

Just all the wrong games; Nobody should ever play Enter the Matrix.
There are plenty of great games that are fairly lengthy, especially when you take into account replayability and 100% completion. And not every game that's short is bad. God of War is about 8-12 hours long, but it's the best 8-12 hours you'll ever have playing a game.
