I would hope the nomination of our next potential justice carries more weight than the Karl Rove scandal.

I'm pulling for Alberto. :(

Well, expecting the nominee to be anything other than a Christian conservative, especially since we have a GOP White House and Senate, might've been pointless.

The fact that this guy is so young (relatively speaking) is the biggest thing about him. He could potentially be the deciding verdict on huge cases like twenty years from now.

Is he conservative? Yeah. But he also seems to be pretty qualified and competent. I think this guy will get approved, but his approval will be sort of the set standard for when Renhquist retires. Already, the talking heads on Fox have said "well, this time we got the level-headed jurist, but NEXT time we'll get the real conservative!" I don't think they realized the humor in what they were essentially saying.

Christian groups will call this guy satisfactory, Left-wing groups will call him qualified but "questionable." I think each side will argue next time that this guy was their concession.

Being young can be a good thing, too. He could be possibly be less entrenched in his views and once he has the ol' lifetime appointement he could drift toward the center. It's happened. On the other hand he could drift right out of right field, climb the wall and go stark raving crackers, too.

I didn't mean that a Supreme court nominee wasn't more important than the Rove thang. I meant making the pick this early, stirring the media pot with the now obviously scripted Laura Bush call for a female nominee and public presence of a female jurist hanging with Bush and then the prime time news conference announcement stuff was all about getting Rove off the front page.

We should have huge computers instead of human judges, like on that episode of Star Trek that I'm sure exists.

I think you're refering to Harvey Birdman when theJetsons were suing present day Earth.

Or one of the episodes where Kirk makes a computer have a breakdown or Spock feels emotions for the first time again.

Yeah, I think it's actually more common that the other way around. The argument is that these justices surround themselves with intellectuals and young clerks, all of whom tend to be more liberal, and it thus has some sort of effect on them.

I dunno, I guess we'll see.

I'm kind of troubled by his joining the decision on detainees basically not even having the right to be at a trial at which they might be sentenced to death. I think that's a little... Unamerican, maybe?

But a little thing like that won't stop him from being a Supreme Court Justice.

At least he and Chuck Schumer can chat about the Bills.
