The Human Equation is truly a great, great album. Day Sixteen: Loser has been a personal favourite for a while.

any further suggestions would be great. i tend to go long periods where i really don't want to hear any metal, so i'm sure i'm missing out on some good stuff!

Mmmm.. Psyopus are godly. If you're into them check out Behold... the Arctopus and Mouth of the Architect. Helm and I speak highly of Maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot for good reasons, also. Red Sparowes are good ambient metal, and Karl Sanders' "Saurian Meditation" is sure to enthrall with its egyptian theme. Melechesh released a fantastic black metal album called "Sphynx" that is also worth checking out.
I've been meaning to scope out Draugar, mind telling me what they sound like?
Ephel Duath is another good choice, by the way. Would you be into progressive death metal at all? Because "Obscura" by Gorguts is definitely far from routine death metal.

No ones mentioned In the Woods yet? Setherial's first album Nord is one of my favorite black metal albums these days, it's kinda like early Emperor. Sorcier Des Glaces, an atmospheric black metal band from Canada has a really cool atmospheric album, Snowland, they're kinda like Xasthur, but with less creepiness and more chilly atmosphericness.
There's a band from my town called Black Sky that I think are just the bees knees for progressive power-metal, they don't have an album out yet, just an ep and a couple tracks on their website http://www.blacksky.ca/ I really do have to check out Into Eternity one of these days though, I've heard nothing but good about them.
Also, as ever I reccomend Therion as a really awesome progressive heavy metal band. Windir also always a good choice also for black metal with some progressive flair.

i'm familiar with all of the bands you mentioned (and i dig them all except for red sparrowes), ninjavenom, except i've never heard of karl sanders or melechesh. i will check them out. thank ya'! also, i can do the progressive death metal thing. it's honestly hard to grab me with it, but i'll check that gorguts album out. i was into them at one point, so maybe it'll click... and as for draugar, check aquariusrecords.org and search for them. two nice reviews and about five sound clips. fucking amazing!
i've been reading good things about "in the woods". i will definitely check them out, along with setherial, whom i've never heard of. i used to really like therion, but everytime i listen to them nowadays i'm confused as to why i liked them so much. i dunno. i never liked windir.
and i love all arcturus albums, though "sham mirrors" is probably my least favorite.
thanks for the suggestions! keep 'em coming!
and if you have anything from either Vuotare, Drudkh, or Striborg please do let me know! i can't find shit!
