View Full Version : XBox 360 demos...

In case you didn't know about it, Best Buy now has demo units of the XBox 360. I saw King Kong demo last night and while the game itself might not be all that entertaining, the landscapes looked pretty goddamned amazing.

That being said, the system is still too big. :o

It may be a bit bigg, but I think they did it on purpose. The first one was gargantuan, so they have to continue with that style. So long as it plays the PC games that my computer can't, I'm cool with it.

Our store does not receive any product from Microsoft. It's gonna be a fun holiday season, having to repeat myself hundreds of times "No, we don't have XBox360, and we will not be getting anything at all for the system."

What sort of shitty video game store doesn't sell MS products? I'm not really a fan of the Xbox, but it's still lame not to offer those products.

James
Nov 6th, 2005, 04:16 PM
We're a toy store, not a video game-specific store.

The story goes that Microsoft says our company owes them money. The company, which filed for bankrupcy, claimed they don't owe them any money on account of the bankrupcy.

So Microsoft isn't sending us any more product until they get the money they say they're owed. And the people who bought out our company over the summer don't appear to be offering any checks anytime soon.

You DO know that Kong and around 1/3 of the 360 launch titles will be on the normal Xbox?

The 360, sadly is technologically equal, and economically better than the PS3. That killed me a bit to hear....

Immortal Goat
Nov 7th, 2005, 11:37 PM
Bullshit it's equal. It sure as hell isn't. PS3 is a LOT more powerful, it's just the 360 can process it faster. And it's cheaper to program for on account of the familiar data storage type. Other than that, though, PS3 is the technologically superior machine. Still doesn't mean it's better, but whatever.

Well whatever. All I know is, my ps2 and the ps2's of damn near EVERY one of my friends that owned one crapped out in less than 2 years and my xbox is still going strong. Plus, I trust microsoft more. Like it or not, they're damn good at what they do and I'm very rarely disappointed with 'em. I still like playstation but I'm gonna definitely go with a 360 on this one :O

Well I dont know about that. The storage media does not affect programming difficulty as it is just storage. Its not like you have to program an application differently if you want it to fun from a flash drive as apposed to say, a CD.
The real programming difficulty comes from the multi core CPUs that both the 360 and PS3 use. IIRC the PS3 uses a 7 core cell processor. This will be particularly difficult to program for as it operates much differently than the more traditional (but still multi core) CPU in the 360.

Technologically speaking i thnk they are about equal. They both use different technologies for their CPUs, GPUs, RAM etc etc
Some parts are better than the equivilent in the rival system, some worse.

You know, the PS2 was in essance, better than the Xbox, but no game developers wanted to go through the headache of programming around its awesome chips. (I really missed the anti-aliasing when playing the xbox)
The xboxes are simply more powerful. They are going for a bigger engine rather than efficiancy. As a result xbox is able to handle more, and technically is more powerful. Still, the playstation is easily superior, though it doesn't matter when the games don't reflect it.

Though I haven't played either systems, so its hard to tell at this point.

but in that case the dreamcast is better than the ps2.

if ps3 was actually out and could play games at more than like 3 fps then maybe we could compare the two systems.

I am gonna do the big store rush after thanksgiving to try and get a 360. Im hoping I can pick one up and it will skyrocket in price like the ps2 did when first relaeased. If not I will wait 30 days for a hack if there are none it goes back to the store.

Yes, that's true. Japan has like triple the population of the US, so sony already owns the market.

I'll get it but probably not right away.

The worst part of these arguments is the fact that not alot has been shown for the PS3, I'm into most consoles solidly for games. I could care less about graphics if the games just plain kick ass. The PS3 is currently riding off of already popular games ( MGS, Killzone) whereas the 360 is primarily New titles. Besides, when the PS3 filnally hits it will have to compete with Microsofts already rabid fan base (if any) and their established market, they have a monopoly for at least 8-9 months.

XBox will probably be the winner this next generation. Sony is really dropping the ball this time around, and even with the Japanese market, Sony can't beat it. THe Japanese market has been declining anyway, so that won't matter. Supposedly, the PS3 will not come out until 2007, so by that time, people will already have a 360 and a Revolution, seeing as the 360 will provide good next gen games, and the Revolution will provide good games with a new twist for cheap.

PS3 is going to flop. I am calling it now.

How was it better when the xbox was more powerful and had better games? The shitty dvd player that broke on what seemed like 30% of the systems? Maybe the inferior online play and inability to put custom soundtracks and shit in games?

Not to mention the Xbox also doubled for home defence as a cudule, and could be easily repaired. I've had mine running with no top half of its case for months now and it works just as good as the day I replaced the main cable and the DVD drive.

I never had a normal playstation...I never really wanted one cause I preferred n64. I got a psone when it came out and played some of the games people had been raving about years prior and loved em, so in retrospect I realized I should've gotten a playstation even though I had an n64 :(

So with that I went and got a ps2 and it broke after less than a year. YAY! My xbox is a fucking tank and can withstand all the shit I've put it through. My choice for next gen consoles won't be hard >:

Probably gonna get the next nintendo eventually too cause I still like my gamecube and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

What the fuck do you do to your consoles?!? If a system needs to be a tank in order to survive your ownership, I dunno what to say. Both my ps1 and ps2 still work just as great as the first day I bought them. I also haven't seen any degradation in the DVD player for the ps2, either.

Anyway, I could count the number of games on XBox that I liked on one hand. Let's see...Halo, Halo 2 (OMG DUAL WIELD), ummmmmmmm...Fable? Help me out here. On the other hand, ps2 had some great games that I liked in most genres:
Fighting: Oh shit like Guilty Gear, Soul Calibur III, Tekken was ok...
Racing: Gran Turismo if you like realism, Midnight Club if you like modding, Burnout if you like insane crashing (that one is multi-platform though), plus SSX (also multi-platform).
Action/Adventure: Devil May Cry, Castlevania, Shadow of the Colossus, Katamari Damacy & sequel, Sly Cooper is kinda young but still a great game, and don't forget that GTA made its debut on the sony systems.
Shooters: I'm not really into these so I don't know much about it, but I liked the Ratchet and Clank games.
RPGs: Disgaea, Makai Kingdom to name a few of many.

I also thought the online play gave me what I wanted: a chance to play with/against other people online. I still play Burnout and SSX online, and they're pretty fun. It's also convenient that it's free.

I'm sure the 360 is a technological marvel, but I don't see how that would matter to me if I buy a system that has games that I don't want to play...really, it's just a matter of preference. I don't think any next-gen system would really "fail". Sure, one may be ahead of sales than the others, but do the figures actually mean anything to you? "OH MY GOD...I thought blahblahblah was soooooo much fun until I found out that they sold 2.3 million less than its competitors. I didn't realize my games were so shitty!" Ya, it would be nice if the ps3 came out on top, but if it didn't, I think I'd still have a great gaming experience with it.

Seriously, don't be afraid of a little competition. It's healthy! :)

I've had parties and shit where people *gasp* have placed drinks and stuff on them, I've played em a lot, moved them around a few times in my backpack or whatever, etc. I don't put them through rigorous tests to see if they'll make it, just do normal shit with them. I'm not saying my consoles need to be BUILT FORD TOUGH, ya dumb cunt, but maybe fucking lasting would work? I don't know if we got a bad batch here in Canada, but like I said, damn near every single one of my friends who owned a ps2 had it crap out of em, even if they never moved it, kept it safe, etc.

As for games, yeah it's about preference. So far I've preferred games with superior graphics and the ps2 exclusives haven't interested me one fucking bit so I've never really wanted a ps2 except for recently cause I wanna play shadow of colossus. Overall most ps2 games didn't interest me and the ones that did were already on xbox or coming to it as a better version. Does it matter that the new GTAs came out on ps2 first? They're better on xbox and I'm not a fanboy who can't wait.

Whatever though. I'm not anti-sony or anything I was just majorly disappointed with the ps2.

Xbox was my favorite this console generation hands down. I loved the Halo games. Sorry, call me a frontrunning fag, but they're just good. The Splinter Cell series, which might as well be Xbox exclusive is now my favorite new franchise. Project Gotham is also my favorite racing game.

Nobody here mentioned Xbox live. Easily the best online on any system. Which the 360 is going to have on launch.

Maybe the inferior online play and inability to put custom soundtracks and shit in games?Well the graphics chips and such were remarkable at the time, and everyone had predicted that the system would wipe the floor with the competition. But as you stated, the PS2 ended up having many flaws, and that games are better with more sprites on the screen than with smooth anti-aliasing.
Why am I arguing with you? I am an Xbox man too.... even though gamecube has all my favorite games.

In relation to another conversation in this thread, I remember a couple years ago that some hick shot his wife's Xbox, and it was still perfectly fine afterwards.

So has anyone else played on yet? I played a display model and I must say the graphics are a let-down. I played King Kong, and it really only looked a little better than an Xbox. A PC will still own this system, which is disappointing. The only good thing is the controller which is quite a bit smaller and simply felt much better in my hands. I may consider getting a controller if it works with PCs and is wireless, but I'm going to save my coins for a PS3 instead.

Speaking about PS2 problems, did anyone here stand their ps2 up sideways and have troubles with it?

I left my PS1 up sideways once and it ruined the CD reader. I've heard similar problems for the PS2 too.

All xbox 360 games that we've seen so far aren't using even a quarter of the graphical power that it has. I got to play it at the shitty Wal-Mart the screen was way up and i got a neck cramp playing Kameo and COD2. Both very fun. The controller's a beautiful thing, too.
