I'm not sure if you've heard about this but a NY Times retired journalist has been recently killed by a thug in the street of DC. This happened in the northwestern part of DC. I know you live in DC so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the part of DC that is usually safe and "thug-free"...? There's a rising suspicion that this was a whack job, possibly from someone in the White House, afterall this was the jounrlaist who was responsible for pouring out the NSA spy scandal to the public...

N.Y. Times Editor-Reporter Dies After Attack in NW
Police Searching for Clues in Robbery

By Martin Weil and Allan Lengel
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, January 9, 2006; B01

David E. Rosenbaum, a longtime editor and reporter in the Washington bureau of the New York Times, died yesterday after being beaten and robbed Friday night near his home in upper Northwest Washington.

Rosenbaum, 63, died at 7:10 p.m. at Howard University Hospital, where he was treated for a head injury suffered during the attack on Gramercy Street NW, said Philip Taubman, chief of the Times's Washington bureau.

Doctors had operated on Rosenbaum on Saturday to relieve pressure on his brain.

D.C. police were canvassing the neighborhood yesterday for clues in the attack, which occurred in a quiet section between Connecticut and Wisconsin avenues. No arrests had been made.

"David was one of the most accomplished journalists of his generation in Washington," Taubman said last night.

"He could do anything, and he did so many things brilliantly," Taubman said. "He was an all-time great, versatile reporter who could tackle any subject" and wrote about the most abstruse matters, particularly in financial areas, with "remarkable lucidity, speed" and sophistication.

Rosenbaum joined the Washington bureau in 1968 and, with the exception of three years as an editor in New York, had spent his entire Times career there. He retired late last month but was to continue contributing to the Times.

After leaving his house Friday night for a walk to get some fresh air, Rosenbaum was found by a neighbor about 9:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Gramercy, a one-block street in an upscale neighborhood about a half-mile south of the Montgomery County border.

Little was known about the circumstances of the assault and robbery.

Police said earlier that two men had been seen getting into an automobile and leaving the area about the time of the attack.

Police said Rosenbaum's wallet was taken, and his brother, Marcus, said the family received a call Saturday indicating that an effort had been made to use a credit card belonging to Rosenbaum.

Rosenbaum's survivors include his wife, two children and two grandchildren.

The area where the attack occurred is one of the safest in the city. Street robberies have been reported there occasionally, but homicides and other violent incidents are all but unknown.

Police said last night that they were treating Rosenbaum's death as a homicide, pending an autopsy.

"It's a remarkably safe neighborhood, or it feels that way . . . until now," said Peter Bass, who lives on Gramercy.

On his street and on adjacent streets of single-family homes, "everybody's comings and goings are noticed," Bass said.

In recent years, he said, many of the houses on the tree-lined streets have been sold by longtime residents to younger couples with growing families.

"We have very small children. We'll have our guard up even more, use our alarms more religiously," Bass said.

Karen and Mitchell Strickler, who moved last year after living on Gramercy for more than 30 years, expressed surprise at the news.

It was a neighborhood, Mitchell Strickler said, where people often did not feel the need to lock their houses. "There was no fear of things," he said.

Rosenbaum was known as a mentor to younger reporters and taught and lectured at Dartmouth College, his alma mater, as well as Stanford University and other colleges and universities.

He was a native of Miami and grew up in Tampa. He worked for the St. Petersburg Times in Florida and Congressional Quarterly in Washington before joining the New York Times.

Among the stories he covered were the Senate Watergate hearings, the Iran-contra affair and budget and tax debates between the White House and Congress.

Rosenbaum's work also was focused on national politics; he directed Times coverage of the New Hampshire primaries in the last three presidential election years and continued to be active in covering the 2004 general election campaign.

In the past year, he had covered Social Security restructuring proposals.

Don't you think if it was a whack job they would have actually killed him? I mean, generally if you're trying to kill someone you don't leave them a chance of recovery, or even the chance to make it to the hospitol in the first place.

Maybe that was the "Cover-up" to make it look like a robbery, though.

Pretty sloppy hit. They didn't even finish him. And then they try and use his credit card? That just leaves more witnesses.

Sounds like a couple of morons out for a quick score.

Yeah thats what I figured...that the two thugs probably wanted to hit the rich part of DC for a better chance at higher score. It was probably just a coincidence taht they robbed the guy who exposed one bush's scandals after another. I still don't understand why they didnt take his rolex and wedding band, though...

I've visited DC tons of times and I've heard horror stories about deaf people getting beaten up because thugs assumed they were gang members after not recognizing their sign language.

My friend who is studying for phd degree in a deaf univeristy that's right in the smack of the ant farm (oops! how racist of me lol) has this weird insight...he states that the white house is deliberately allowing thugs to run rampant in the dilapidiated part of DC. Whenever someone in the white house feels compelled to whack someone, they would do so, then make it look like a robbery and blame it on the thugs from the ant farm (oops!).

Of course this thread has derailed to the topic of yogurt. But then this is America and this is why the Bush administration is able to get away with one crime after another...mainly because we are easily distracted by the power of yogurt. Only if we can resist the power of yogurt, we'll be able to fight and bring down this administration in order to take back our country. Mmmm...yogurt...

Okay, there really aren't too many "rich parts" of DC. Saying that the NW section of DC is rich would be like saying hipsters live in Brooklyn. Sure they're there, but so is a lot of other stuff. Columbia Heights is in the NW, and although demographics are changing all over the city, it's still not a safe place in many parts.

Regardless, DC isn't the silly warzone you've described it as.

I've visited DC tons of times and I've heard horror stories about deaf people getting beaten up because thugs assumed they were gang members after not recognizing their sign language.

I live in a very safe area, but a dude still got shot in the head walking his dog one night like two blocks away from me. Bad shit happens everywhere, including the "good" spots.

Dude, you just fucking linked to pro-Saddam site. Not just against the occupation, not anti-Bush, not even anti-America.

They are pining for the return of Saddam fucking Hussien. They are hero worshipping Tariq Aziz.Everything is a damned conspiracy to them.

They don't think Rosenbaum was killed by Team Bush. They don't have the evidence to support such an idea.

But they sure as hell hope he was.

I'm just curious: Do you work for the Bush Administration? Do you come in here acting this fucking whacked linking to these sites, so when people have logical ,well thought gripes and accusations against him, we can just write them off as left wing conspiracy nuts?

If not, you are like the Louis Farehkan of the anti-Bush movement. The people who are already dumb enough to believe your crap are foaming at the mouth for this crap. However, the rest of us who have an ounce of reason are simply put off, if not disgusted, by your inane ramblings.

But you want me to speculate on the watch and ring? I don't know. Maybe a wedding ring is hard to fence in their area. Maybe the watch wasn't areal Rolex and they could tell. Maybe they thought they didn't have a lot of time so they grabbed the wallet, wich held his cash.

Maybe the attacker(s) were as inept as Maurice Clarett. Its not the kind of occupation that requires a MBA.

I don't know. And neither do you, but somehow, you've jumped to the wildest conclusion you can find.

If Bush is going to start waxing public figurtes that have written or said disparraging things about him and his cabinet, he's going to be busy for a while.

Blanco...I'm not jumping into any conclusion. I just feel compelled to believe that this journalist was assassinated because of the long list of the news anchors, journalists who has "resigned", "commited suicide" and "died of a disease" since Bush adiministration took power. Assassination and gagging has become a fixation for this administration. Maybe it was just a coincidence...but I'm just questioning since it's impossible for me to trust anything this administration and the public press says...

Dan Rather
Tom Brokaw
Peter Jennings
Ted Koppel
Barabara Walters
Gary Webb (shot himself in the back of his head...twice)

Pat Robertson's call for Chavez assassination
etc

Assassination and gagging has become a fixation for this administration.

Who? Who have they assassinated?

Maybe it was just a coincidence...but I'm just questioning since it's impossible for me to trust anything this administration and the public press says...

There's a difference between not trusting them and accusing them of murder.

Here is a list that maybe you can debunk each of them for me since youre the mister know-it-all kind of a guy...

Amazing how aI point out I don't know, yet you claim I say just the opposite.

Dan Rather

Yes, he got railroaded for a stupid mistake. It was still his fault, but he shouldn't have been pushed out. Thats not a conspiracy, thats opportunism.

Tom Brokaw

He's 66 years old. He's also still working for NBC. That and he announced his retirement in 2002 before the elections.

Peter Jennings

Let me guess, the assassins went back in time and forced him to start smoking.

Ted Koppel

Again 66 years old. And still does a lot of work producing for the Discovery Channel, doing news specials and the like.

Barabara Walters

She's 77. And do you know what she's done the last 10 years? Celebrity interviews. Even her 20/20 stuff wasn't all the relative to current events and politics.

Gary Webb (shot himself in the back of his head...twice)

I see nothing about two shots to the head. I do see he was clinically depressed and not only pissed off the government, but also the South American drug lords.

Hunter Thompson

Ya, wax a guy who hasn't been relevent since before some us were born. That makes sense.

78 Iranian jounrlaists (who were in the plane that crashed into a building...several witnesses clamied they saw or heard an explosion beforehand)

Oh, well, thats different. "Several people" say they heard explosions before hand. We all know planes don't crash.

Bush desire to bomb al-Jazeera media outlet

And what al-Jezeera outlet was blasted? Just curious.

Bush and Blair's call to prosecute those who leak any damaging information

Again, we have a big jump from "overly sensetive about criticism" to "whacking discidents." Nobody has been jailed over their criticisms yet.

Pat Robertson's call for Chavez assassination

Is Chavez a reprter?
Is he dead?
Have there been any failed attempts on our part?
Is this the first time Robertson's said crazy shit?

etc
etc

etc
and the list goes on and on....

No it doesn't. It doesn't even start.

Don't forgot the assassination attampt of Reagen by a guy who worked for H.W. Bush back in the 80's...

If you don't think the Bush administration are capable of assassinating anyone...well, you're wrong...

You're right, you're right about them resigning for their own cause. Tom Brokaw is still working with NBC. Ted Koppel has recently been hired by Discovery Channel. But if I was a hard headed, serious news anchor, I'd make sure I spent my retirement sipping on mai tai and kicking it by the carribean.

But I'm curious, do you think the public press have become pussified? Even after the fact that that eye-blinking twat-lipped faggot Geraldo Rivera is what fox news calls the top investigative reporter? That Bill O'Lielly is the man of strong opinion and heavy debator for Fox News?

I strongly believe most of the veteran news anchors have resigned not for the reason of old age and their mistakes but in their refusal to obey orders by the Bush administration to act like an obdeient dog. Do you think they'd want to spend their remaining years sitting, rolling and barking and retire in that kind of form? And what do you think might happen to those who refuse to obey/resign and want to continue to perform deep investigation and ask hard questions?

Even Dan Rather have mentioned zillion of times that the media have been dumbed down by the administration. He was the first to come up with the lit-tire-around-their-neck analogy. In order to create a hierarchical system clean of dissenters, it's a good idea to hire someone who is more passive, easily bought out and more than willing to smile for the camera and assure the viewers that everything is just hunky dory.

Honestly, I used to think the guy was crazy and a bit too over the top. But as the time loomed over, I'm finding out more and more that everything he says is true. Once I started to see the light that 9/11 was an inside job...everything becomes MUCH clearer.

And truthfully, I know I'm not crazy. It's easy to recognize the pattern in the timeline of Bush administration's true agenda (PNAC, anyone?), the reason for their habit of bullshitting, breaking laws and stomping on the consitution. I'm not doing this for attention, or to be RAD, DIFFERENT, EXTREEEEME and COOL, I just feel that this is the reality.

Although there are some extremists who I think are exagerrating when they say we as americans live in a police state. Those are the people who probably hate their job, their life, trapped under avalanche of credit card bills, etc. I don't feel that my freedom has been stripped otherwise I wouldn't be posting in here. I don't want to force anyone to see things my way because it's a free world (at least I think it is) and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
