View Full Version : Silent Hill - Scary things that look like vagina insides!

The movie really seems like it has all the potential in the world to be really good. There's a lot of work being put into the film, and there's seemingly a desire to be faithful to the source material.

I never played the games (I can't, because they scare the shit out of me), but I know the stories for the most part. And people who have played the games keep saying how perfect this movie seems to be.
Is it actually possible that we'll get a GOOD video game adaptation for once? Or is it all a trick, and someone will go "FOOLED YOU!" and show us a movie about Michelle Rodriguez blowing shit up while a heavy metal soundtrack plays, and then Matrix-fights a bunch of zombies?

I have mixed feelings. The Silent Hill games are well adapted to movies (Especially number 2) because they're heavily focused on plot and environment and less on action (as opposed to, say, RE). Silent Hills 3 and 4 had some of the scariest shit yet, especially 3's hospital area. All of that gives me hope for the movie since it seems to me that it could be easily converted without losing a lot of the original charm.
On the other hand, they altered the story of SH1 a bit and that worries me. Last I heard it was something like a merger between the plots of the first and second one, but I don't know the specifics.

It's kind of loosely based on the first two games, but it seems more intended to be a story all its own.
But story changes aside, it really seems that the integrity of the games is being preserved. Go to the official site (with sound), and look at the new trailer.

It comes out on my birfday :(
It's looking fairly good, but there are too many living people, like in the scene on the staircase where she yells "It's coming!"... part of what made the games so great was the lack of human companionship so that you were truly alone
Pyramid Head has nice feet. There better be a sex scene with him and the mannequins or I'm walking out :(

I've been thinking about it, and probably only fans of the SH games (or, at least, people who know what it's about) are going to enjoy the movie. Pyramid Head is one of the scariest villains ever, I think, on the basis of his sheer up-fuckedness, but he's probably going to look really goofy to people who haven't played the games.
Edit: Also, I thought Silent Hill was in Illinois. If you walk around the town you find Illinois state signs, the Chicago News in the school, and I think Route 66 is supposed to pass near it.

And I thought the main character in Silent Hill was supposed to be a guy. :/
Then again, a 32 year old grown man screaming in terror and running like a bitch from a bunch of fucked up monsters isn't exactly the best movie material, so I can kinda see why they changed Harry to a woman. :/

Besides, why ruin the story of the movie for yourself by playing the game NOW, of all times?

Dammit James, no one plays Silent Hill for the fucking controls because quite frankly they do suck, but like my grandma use to always say about her old Subaru "It gets you were you need to be and thats good enough for me, now put this strap over your shoulder so it looks like your seatbelt still works." I have to agree. Although the controls are frustrating (why haven't so many people complained about Resident Evil's controls and the danmed inventory space), it's a fucking awesome (and scarringly disturbing) game.

The reason that the game was so different was because it was actually a different game during development. However, Konami was worried that a new horror game would not do as well so they changed some things around and called it Silent Hill 4. I think that was about the same story with Super Mario Bros. 2 (which was originally Doki Doki Panic). My bad if I already mentioned this.

Why the hell would you want to make a movie out of Metal Gear Solid when that's pretty much what it already is?
While we're on the subject of video game movies, not to mention MGS, I realized a few weeks ago that the Metroid movie would work really well as an MGS ripoff, with the FOXHOUND members being replaced by pirate generals or something of that caliber, Liquid Snake being replaced by Mother Brain, Metal Gear being replaced by the army of Metroids, and the colonel being replaced by some Galactic Federation guy. I'm not sure what they'd do with Gray Fox though (maybe the baby Metroid, which Samus could find on Zebes instead of SR-388?), and they'd probably need to get rid of Meryl completely. :(

http://silenthill.ugo.com/features/realsilenthill/default.asp
In researching the different elements of Silent Hill, screenwriter Roger Avary (Killing Zoe, The Rules of Attraction) came across the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania (it's interesting that LA moviemakers look to the deep Midwest when they're looking for something "strange" or "different"). Centralia planted the seed for what developed into the cinematic version of the town of Silent Hill.
As recently as 1981, there were over 1,000 residents living in Centralia, although the population has now dwindled to 11 (we'll say that again: 11 people) as a result of a 40-year mine fire burning beneath the borough (we'll say that again: it's been burning for 40 years... underneath the town). This is certainly not unlike Silent Hill, which was left deserted since devastating coal fires ravaged the town and its people.
The inferno started when a trash fire was lit in an abandoned mine pit in Centralia in 1962. The fire ignited an exposed vein of coal and spread throughout the mines beneath the borough. Several attempts have been made and millions of dollars have been spent unsuccessfully to extinguish this fire that still burns today.
The "problem" wasn't really acknowledged until a series of accidents in the '70s and '80s, including the appearances of sinkholes hundreds of feet deep. In 1984, Congress allocated more than $40 million for relocation efforts, and most residents moved to nearby Mount Carmel and Ashland.
However, a very few families opted to stay, and they're still there, despite the fact that the state of Pennsylvania has condemned all the buildings in the borough and the US Postal Service has revoked its zip code of 17927. The 11 holdouts include the town's 89-year-old mayor, Lamar Mervine, who refuses to leave because "I like it here."
You can find more information on Centralia, Pennsylvania here. (http://www.offroaders.com/album/centralia/centralia.htm) Or perhaps one day you will heed its call and find yourself exploring its deserted streets...
Well, almost deserted.

Call me crazy, but not a super huge CG fan, Im actually kinda worried that from what Ive seen in the trailer, the whole alternate world of Silent Hill will look too much like a new-generation Silent Hill game with an actress stuck in it. I donno. I hope it works for the best, but I personally think that CG is overated and can look really fake or take away something from a movie. I shouldnt say that the CG would look "unrealistic" (considering the game), but it kinda makes it like an actor super-imposed in some videogame, visually, and it looks less organic. Still, I am really pulling for this movie.

It seems that they're showing more and more footage of the monsters with each passing day, and they have that nasty plastic look that the monsters have had since SH2. I could really do without the "I am the reaper" part, and I still have to imagine what it would be like if David Lynch had directed it.....Probably random rabbits, real dwarfs, and maybe even some sudden HLA between Rose and Cybil, but that's just for the dreamers of dreams.

Yeah, that "I am the reaper" part just made me shake my head, but everthing else looks really good. I still say SH2 would translate the best to film out of all the games, but meh.

Which is good, because I've never played 1 and I really didn't like 4. I loved 2 and 3 though.

I've beaten all of them, got all the endings, and I have to say that Silent Hill 4 was the only one of the bunch that felt like a chore the whole time. Probably because it was originally a different game entirely, but when they needed another sequel, they stamped the Silent Hill name on it.

This is, without a doubt, the most faithful video game adaptation ever. EVERY AREA is IDENTICAL to how it appeared in the games, from the infamous alleyway, to the bathrooms, to the camera angles (NOTABLY IN THE ALLEY AND THE ZOOM ON THE HOSPITAL MAP). For the difficult task of adaptating seemingly unadaptable source material , Gans and Avary did a helluva job. And now for the gripes.
-Pyramid Head underused, he is effectively used in two scenes, and disappears for the remainder. His presence isn't even spoken of afterwards, instead, treated like a garden variety monster like the others
-The Nurse scene is unintentionally funny, and badly cut. Although the allusion to their futility without light was a welcome acknowlegement.
-Some of the dialogue was absolutely ridiculous, either in execution or in general ("LOOK, I'M BURNING!") And many characters have a bad habit of stating the obvious (CYBIL WALKING INTO A CHARRED ROOM: "There was a fire here."
-The mentions of Henry Townsend and Eddie Dombrowski in the credits, presumably as minor cultist characters with no dialogue.
-The ending....C'mon....I was afraid they would go with the obvious twist, but chalked it up to cliche paranoia. I was sadly disappointed that they chose to go with the "dead the whole time" ending, especially when it takes the "High Tension" route of negating all of the previous events of the past 2 hours.
-Sean Bean's character is useless, and what could have been explored, was discarded. Then again, Avary wrote the script with no males, and was forced to add one when the first draft was returned to him saying "There are no men!" This makes it blatantly obvious that he was a last minute addition.
Other then these gripes, the film remained a fuckin' blast to watch. I was quite surprised to return home pleased only to see that the critics completely ripped it to pieces (One absurdedly comparing it to Uwe Boll's work). Fuck the critics, it's worth a watch.

"Let’s start with the running time for Silent Hill: two hours and five minutes. Totally out of control."
-- Christy Lemire, ASSOCIATED PRESS
"Had Silent Hill been directed by Peter Jackson, perhaps there would have been an explanation or justification for its 127-minute length. But Christophe Gans? Seriously?"
-- Dan Fienberg, ZAP2IT.COM
i hate when people get REALLY ANNOYED at the length of the movie, sure if it was 5 hours long or something, but an extra half hour? what critical things did they miss out on in that time that they lost forever thanks to silent hill?
anyway, sounds good from fans of the game, might see it

SPOILERS
Of course, it's NOT a complete adaptation of Silent Hill 1. It's already been established that elements from all of the games would be integrated into ONE film. The patient demons and the Hotel was in Silent Hill 2, Rose is dressed similar to Heather, and if you want to get REALLY technical, where was Kaufman, and why was Dahilia a tragic character instead of the main villain? I think that, even though they were proud of their film, that Gans and Avary were confident that this movie wasn't likely to please critics or generate a definite sequel, hence, the integration of elements from all of the games (hardly SH4) into one BIG film. They made this film strictly for the fans, and that's all I ever wanted.

Also, that part where they jump across apartment rooms was straight outta the second game, Stereotype. Also the bowling alley was from the seond. Yeah, the ending was pretty lame, and made even me go "wtf". Anyways, there were a lot of references from the first three games, which tell that Gans played them all. Obviously they arent the same, and some parts may be altered, but a lot of it really did keep to the spirit and moments from the first three. Yeah, but for me it was made ten times better due to the fact that I thought she was really fucking annoying.

Anyone seen or have this: http://www.konami.com/silenthill/she/ ? It's a PSP "game" that has lots of Silent Hill extras, like the two comics, lots of behind the scenes-type stuff from the movie, and I guess music from the movie and games too.
I picked up "The Silent Hill Experience" which is officially called an "interactive umd" not a "PSP thingy" :) Pretty cool. The comics are animated, which is neat and they have both of them on there. It's also got music from all four games, game trailers, the movie trailer, and interviews with Christopher Gans and Akira Yamaoka. It also has the "fukuoku" video and a couple of others that I can't remember the name of right now. Good stuff for fans of the series. It's kind of like having all the extras on the movie DVD way before the DVD comes out. I paid too much for it ($28.95) but it's only supposed to be $19.99

Does it have a trailer for the first game or is it just the intro?

Trailer. It's got some trailers for all 4 of the games. There is a lot of "hidden" stuff on the UMD too, not sure if I've seen it all.

I finally saw it today. I'm with IG: great movie, but more intense than scary, really.
As for Pyramid Head, his appearance in the movie is just like the appearance of the tertiary FF7 characters in Advent Children: he's there as a nod to the fans of the game. Nothing more. As IS pointed out already, he technically shouldn't have even been in the movie, but it was still cool seeing him there.

I saw this yesterday at the cinema, it was good! A little slow perhaps but overall it had alot of cool content - especially the ending, loved the hellraiser style barbwire and the woman having her skin pulled off by pyramid head.
Edit: way to almost ruin it for everyone who hasn't seen it yet.

I just saw it last night thinking I would hate it but I LOVED it.
The only thing that raised a WTF flag for me was the very end. Way to give me a lame ending.
Also I liked a couple of the death scenes. Though the suspense was the best part. It wasn't as scary as I'd hoped but it was a BRILLAINT plot. I'm stillpiecing parts of it together.

I still think It's amazing how well Silent Hill is doing. Twice, yesterday I heard people talking about it at school.

Overall, I'd say it's the pretty damn good execution of a crappy story.
SPOILERS!!
My favorite scene (besides pyramid head) had to be the flashback after the burning of Alessa, where Detective Thomas is cradling her in his arms and he just had that look on his face. Many parts felt like they were some indie movie rather than hollywood, like when the first arrive in SH and she descends that first staircase, and also when that elevator drops down the shaft.
Alessa with all the razor wire reminded me of the fight with Mary in SH2.
I wanted to see more of the underground coal mines where the "fires are still burning" (WE GET IT ALREADY!!), rather than some of the other locations they chose. In the opening where Sharon stares into the valley and it zooms down into the coal mines, it looked so badass, I wanted to see that more.
The Nurse scene reminded me of some interperative ballet the way they danced and swung their heads around. The sounds they made were great though. Awesome music.
I think the ending was 100% piss poor, like they were running out of film and the director said "I have to wrap this up in three minutes." I liked the cult members in the mining suits... I learned once that miners could use birds to sense a collapse before it happened or to smell gas leaks. Now they use canaries to sense when the darkness is coming. Some people seemed to be really confused about this. The link between their old lives of coal mining and their new lives in the darkness was very cool.
I did like the themes of guilt and judgement that were in the games and the movie, they did that pretty well.
Alessa's hate grew so much that she tore the town into two dimensions, one regular and another where demons would torment those who harmed her. I'll bite. But why would Rose be pulled into the alternate reality? And why wasn't Boromir? Why isn't Alessa dead by now? She's been in an abandoned hospital with no food or medical care for years. I guess we're just supposed to "go with it." And why was that nurse in red missing her eyes. Did Alessa take them for looking at her? Maybe I'm as dense as a stone but I felt like there were alot of plot holes.
This reminded me of The Grudge, and I hated The Grudge. More disturbing than children burning and Voldo in a bathroom stall is this trend among "horror (or what you want to call them)" movies of creepy little girls paired with storylines that are so poorly written that you're supposed to pretend like they make an ounce of sense. Just feels like it's been done before.

I agree there did seem to be a fair few plot holes. But I dont want to make too much of it incase I just didn't understand it :(
For example did the main woman and cop die at the beginning in a car crash or what? :s
DeadKennedys

No, they didn't die. Even the cultists weren't dead until Alessa ripped them the fuck up. I'm assuming that once you get caught up in that world you can't leave.
I spend the large majority of this movie with my eyes squinted and my head cocked because none of it seemed to piece together well. There were those moments when I went "holy crap, that's cool" but in a good movie I find myself feeling alot of different emotions and I felt very, very few while watching Silent Hill.
There were connections between Colin and Pyramid head and the concepts of rape and rape imagery I think. I feel like this is something I'll have to watch a second time if I want to really put it all together.

Hey sorry, but that was the most disappointing game for me, and when I saw the trailer, I expected it to be the most warped game in the series. SH 3 will always be the scariest for me. The reason SH4

I have to say Brave Heart shows the most brutal deaths ever, personally, but the barbed wire scene made me cringe.

no way, no scene in braveheart got me as close to as getting myself beyong-cringing when silent hill showed the lady officer getting bubbling hot alive! and that scene with the burnt crisp girl :::{ the barb wire scene was cheese~
