So about a week and a half ago my mom tells me that the local Dollar General just lost a few people and that they need someone to replace them, and that she told the clerk that she would send me down. I go down there and apply. I turn my application in the same day. No problems so far. The clerk tells me that the manager will give me a call.

Two days later I go in to check on my application at the urging of my girlfriend and mom. I go in and talk to the manager. She doesn't seem particularly enthralled to see me, but she takes my application out and puts it on top of the stack. Alright, things are looking pretty good. The manager tells me that she'll give me a call after she goes through the applications this afternoon. Alright.

Two days later I go in again and talk to the manager once more, trying to give her the impression that I really need a job. She seems kind of pissed off that I'm talking to her. She says that she'll give me a call after she goes through the applications this afternoon. Again. Right.

I decide to give it some time. Four days pass, til we reach today. I'm nervous since I haven't recieved a single call from Dollar General. Not even a "sorry, we don't need your services" call. I go in to buy some masking tape for painting our car and when I enter I notice the "Now Hiring!" sign is gone. This is bad news. I check out with my tape and ask the lady behind the counter about my application. She had been relatively cheerful until I asked, then suddenly she became very seemingly distracted and a little miffed, I guess. She asked for my money and turned to the other clerk behind her and grumbled a few words about my application. The other clerk said "Well, we're not hiring right now."

This confused my girlfriend, who was with me. "He turned in his application when you were hiring." The other clerk said "Well, we already hired two ladies, and they were already interviewed and went through background checks." Something about the way she said "ladies" bothered me. It occurred to me that I had never, in 13 years of shopping there, seen a man working there. Not even as a stocker or manager. This was true of every Dollar General I had ever been in. Even just now, when I told my mom that they weren't hiring anymore, she said "Well, yeah, I figured that. Have you ever seen a man working there?"

Discrimination is bullshit. >:

That's kinda sad. The fact that women hold a heavy lobby at Dollar General.

For what it's worth, I'm sorry as hell. It sucks. I'd say that it seems you have a nice discrimination case there. The problem is proving it.

I was also going to say that I'm sure you can do better than Dollar General but I don't know if you live in a shitpoke town or a city.

Sorry all the same.

I know I can do better than DG. That's not the point. It's about the only job in my town that I wouldn't have to drive to get to. And it's better than nothing.

They actually have a really decent health plan and pay scale. Out here they start you off at $9.50 an hour.

You've been shopping at DG for 13 years?? Are you still in school? If not, you need to set your sights higher than Dollar General.

Keep looking... If you are out of school, don't settle for any McJob... you need to think about a career. If you are young and still in school.... go to the mall, they are always hiring!

If you are 19 then I assume you are out of school. Are you going to college?

Yeah, I'm in college right now, but one of my classes got cancelled so I'm only part time. Which is why I'm looking for a job at all.

Dollar General is a damn good start for a psycology major.

Really isn't there anything else in your town? Also four-six weeks before summer is a great time to look for employment.

I really wish you luck.

I just applied for a job, and when I went into my interview the manager who happened to be from eastern europe said "Hey, you're good friend of these two guys, they're good guys, so I'm not going to bother with doing interview here, when can you start?" It was a bit ridiculous I thought.
That's really weird about the sexist dollar store though, it's not like your applying to be a server at a diner or anything.

Two things disturb me. One, now that you mention it there are no male employees of any dollar store I've ever been to (dollar tree, dollar general, etc.).

Two...there's a fucking background check to work at the dollar store?

lol, can you imagine the back break room of the dollar general, full of anti-penis propaganda, tampon machines everywhere.

It's not so much that I live in a dead-end town as it is that I'm trying to save money on commutes. The town I live in is small, but we're relatively close to a large city (Peoria.) It would still be a 20 minute drive to get to any job I get in Peoria, on top of the half-hour drive it takes to get to my college. So I've been trying to get a job as close to my house as possible, and DG is only about a block away.

there are guys working at the dollar generals, etc., here. but the treatment you received is disturbing. you could contact the better business bureau, but it probably wouldn't do any good...

This is making more sense. The only guys that do work for DG are on the sex offender registry. Its no wonder the females that work there are so pissed off at the male population.

Yeah, I'm not concerned enough about it to contact anybody. It just pisses me off because it would've been a good place to work. :<

Background checks and rent-a-cops...EVERYTHINGS A FUCKING DOLLAR!!! This isn't a bank or a Circuit City or something.

This calls for an i-mockery boycott of Dollar General. In the name of Emu.
