View Full Version : What was your first RPG?

Although the first RPG I ever played was Super Mario RPG, I had no idea what RPG meant at the time and didnt know hwat the hell was going on in it when I rented. I don't have anything against it, and even own it, but it's a drag Mario couldnt talk. Anyways, what I considered my first true RPG was Chrono Trigger, which kept me renting it for weeks. I was blown away by the music (especially that piano midi that sounded almost exactly like piano when you fail to open one of those seals) and effects, and the story had kept me going. That New Game + feature where you could start a new game with all your stats and items from the previous game was also a plus. I'll admit that there seemed to be some flawed story and plot structure near the end, and things I wished that were explained, and I wish Chrono would talk too, but that game is still close to my heart.

I hope you aren't talking bout the one with the Dark Night, Cecil, and was called FF II when first released in the US. I actually loved the story in that better then VII. I can understand if it had to do with the random battles, insane difficulty, or plain graphics, but the story was a huge fucking leap from the previous games.

Ok........................Anyways, I'm not talking exactly about just your first RPG, but the RPG that first made you fall in love with the genre.

.....Also, fuck off, Stereotype. I've been playing since Super Mario World, and even had Super Mario Allstars as a kid.

DONT YOU EVER ASSUME THAT WAS MY FIRST MARIO GAME. And yes he did talk.....in the cartoons (another fact your probably assumed otherwise of was that I actually watched re-runs of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show).

I don't have to assume anything. you're in, what, 7th grade?

hey, just because it says super mario 64 doesn't mean that there were 63 mario games before it.

I believe it was Hero's Quest, if that counts. It was a point & click style RPG/Adventure. I think it was made by Sierra, and it's kinda like Kings Quest. Only with RPG elements.
After that I really didn't play any RPGs, but then came the allmighty Fallout 2 and ate my soul.

FF3 was the first RPG I ever played. I got it for christmas one year, and hated it then after about the second year of it collecting dust I pluged it in and started playing and couldn't stop....I never did beat it. For some reason I could never beat the Ghost Train. After that I was given Metal Warriors from a friends mom beause she deemed it too violent for her kids.

If it counts, it was Fatal Labyrinth for me.

I'd kinda rather not count that though, so I'd have to say earthbound.

I cannot pick one game so here it goes

FF3 (Snes)= I never played much as a kid, and the opening music scared me, that pipe organ with the thunder freaked me out.

Thousand Arms (Playstation)= The most fucked up RPG in existence and the closest a true dating sim came to hitting the North American Shores. It was just addicting, and a fun twist on the RPG genre. The twist being that in order to obtain magic you had to date hot chicks to be able to gain charisma to be able to forge stronger weapons.

Wild Arms (Playstation)= Good lord, I love that music.

FF3 was my first, the only real reason why i wanted to learn to read, to show my brother i could beat it before him. pff stupid chump. i lost :(, i didnt figure out how to read untill a year later, by that time, my brother, beat it atleast 10 times, i was angry.

My first RPG was Final Fantasy II (or IV, if you're one of those purists). I got an SNES for Christmas around 1991 or so, and it came with Super Mario World, but my aunt was rich and felt like tossing money around so me and all my cousins also got FFII and Populous.

I played through Mario World first, then dove into FFII and never looked back. Unlike Guitar Woman >: I actually loved FFII and I remember having more than one fanboyish breakdown when I started seeing previews for FFIII in Gamepro.

This probably makes me a big fucking nerd but I lost my first girlfriend over Chrono Trigger :(

Man, if Dragon Warrior was my first RPG, it would have turned me off the genre permanently. Hell, playing the roms of the series a while back almost did that anyway.

Final Fantasy Adventure was my first RPG. My brother and I somehow lost our copy of the game (I still swear it's somewhere in my grandmother's house), but I rebought it when Nintendo rereleased all their GB Final Fantasy games. I also bought FF Legend 3. I kind of wish I'd bought 1 and 2 when I had the chance. :/

I know what you mean. It had that plain battle interface, the overly elaborate menu (although I think FF had that too) just for pressing the action button, annoying dialog, blah blah blah. Also, the game files kept on erasing. Battery memory must of been dying.

The actual FFII, not FFIV, is starting to inspire me to break controllers. And my head. On the sharp corner.

No wonder it wasn't released in the US before Origins. I think if this was my first RPG, I'd have had to snap something in half.

You know, for posterity.

...How so? Do I imagine it's a good game or something?

I'm sure back in its day, it was considered an amazing game. But if that had been my first exposure to RPGs, I'd have been turned off RPGs forever. It's like if Turok Evolution had been your first FPS, or if Bubsy 3d had been your first platformer.

Emu
Apr 29th, 2006, 11:45 AM
Yeah, I've played through all of the single player campaigns with my friends. The campaigns are more or less suited to co-op play, but there are a few awkward moments (Like in Hordes of the Underdark, there's one point where the game crashes if you have more than one person in it, but all that means is that you have to finish that part alone and then your teammates can rejoin after.)
