View Full Version : HELP ME DECIDE ON A GAME!

I'm trying to get Emily into some traditional gaming as most of the titles she's familiar with are either rhythm-oriented, MMOs, or exclusive to the Atari 2600. I'm trying to get her into games that involve 2 or more players cooperatively, but are mainstream genres and not overly kiddy. This is because I would beat her in versus games, I'm trying to get her foot in the door to gaming in general, and she'd instantly latch onto kiddy games and never stop playing them. And the only problem with that is that most people don't do that shit :<
Basically, I'm looking for some sort of cooperative 2+ player adventure/platformer for XBox that does not require a lot of deep thought to operate. Simple cooperative maneuvers would be appreciated (like how you can do tandem attacks in Simpsons arcade by holding the buttons when near each other). Something that is cool and sadistically humorous would be preferable to something HARDCORE BLOOD GORE HAHA OWNED would be great.
I'm also in the market for a SIMPLE FPS to get her into for PC. Right now I think the best one I've got is the new Unreal Tournament, but something where she can't constantly fall to her death by accident would be great, too.
Adventure/Platformer/Sidescrollers I'm considering! PLEASE REVIEW!
Blinx 2
LOTR 2 & 3
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer
X-Men Legends 1 & 2
Dynasty Warriors 4 & 5
Metal Slug 3/4/5
Lego Star Wars
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee
Phantasy Star 1 & 2
Baldur's Gate: DA 1 & 2
Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer
Fallout: BOS (I thought this was the TBS game, but apparently there's a shooter by the same name?)
Dungeons and Dragons Heroes
Star Wars: Battlefront
FPSes I'm considering!
Doom 1/2 and Quake (Srsly)
Unreal Tournament 2K5 (or whatever the new one is)
Any reviews and thoughts would be appreciated! We're having some fun with Jet Set Radio Future's Ball Hog co-op mode, but it doesn't work too well against computer opponents.

Perhaps Soul Caliber?

X-Men Legends would be a good choice, but it IS an RPG, so there may be the need to do some grinding.
Shaolin Monks is also a good possibility, but I hear the end is a bitch. You could go with the second or third Lord of the Rings games too. They are a lot of fun with co-op. Or you can just go with a completely mindless game like Dynasty Warriors or Guantlet.
It's not an FPS, but it's a shooter. The Star Wars Battlefront games are great fun, and not too difficult. The first one makes you feel like the ultimate badass with how many people you can mow down, while the second one is a little tougher. But playing with two people is great fun, aside from the whole splitscreen thing.

Only problem might be with the special moves that you get. And sometimes the enemy can be cheap when they run a train on you. But co-op should take care of that.

Going through James' list, I'd like opinions on the following as it relates to co-op play:
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee
Phantasy Star 1 & 2
Baldur's Gate: DA 1 & 2
Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer
Fallout: BOS (I thought this was the TBS game, but apparently there's a shooter by the same name?)
Dungeons and Dragons Heroes

Try something like Capcom Classics Collection, the Midway Classics, or if you're interested in playing Shaolin Monks, get God of War for 20.00. Vastly superior, and geniunely fun. And I have yet to find anybody that hates Guitar Hero.

I'll reiterate for the people that are too retarded to grasp my first post in all of its OVERWHELMINGLY CONVOLUTED entirety:
Eligible games MUST:
- Be on xbox
- Have 2-player co-operative play
- Not be rhythm games
- Not be FPSes, unless they have a PC counterpart
- Not be traditional racing games
- Not be esoteric
- Not be kiddie games
- Be current-gen titles
REVIEWS of games on that list at the top would be much appreciated too; I don't trust the rest of the internet's opinion on anything.

I'm glad to see you're finally giving some serious consideration to Dynasty Warriors. FINALLY. FUCK.
edit: upon thinking about it, I think that Return to Castle Wolfenstein has a co-op mode AND it's on PC as well. Serious Sam is also co-op (I think)

What the hell is a 'kiddie game'?
Nintendo games, so it's not something we'll have to worry about since we're talking about a big-boy system.

Godzilla get tedius after about 5 minutes.
Dynasty Warriors is fun if you don't wont to worry about story line and just like watching your charachters kill dozens of people with one attack. It a good party game/late night game, after everyone is Haloed out.

You got the shit part right. Sega's good, but they can put out some really lame crap.
It's either $20 or $30, but you can get Sonic Mega Collection and Super Monkey Ball Deluxe in a single game case. SMC is pretty much every good Sonic game and some that suck, and Monkey Ball Deluxe is Monkey Ball 1 and 2, plus extra levels and such. There's really nothing co-op about any of this, but you might be interested.

*This was written at 6:00 AM, however my internet connection fell out*
Dynasty Warriors 3
Here's a game I'd play for hours and hours with friends:
STORY:
Excuse me, did you say "Story"?
* / *****
GAMEPLAY:
It's got you mindless action, as nothing is better than mowing down 1,ooo men and still be standing. It has your RPG elements, like stat growth and item collecting.
It's got your Chinese history lessons.
It has Co-op AND co-op attacks, just as you specified.
Great to play with a friend.
It also has a slew of characters with their own unique abilities to play as.
****/ *****
The graphics are good, even though they don't hold a candle to today's titles. Character models are good, though the limited animations aren't.
*** / *****
You'll tire of the endless hard-rock soundtrack, as it plays to no end. It's best to turn the music down and play something on your stereo.
Otherwise, the sounds are pretty good.
**/ *****
Now for the downside: While the gameplay may be good, the limited attacks and combos may get extremely repetitive in the end. It's a good game to play 10 min. at a time.
Personally, I love it. Sadly, I don't play much of it these days as I have passed over it in favour of Jade Empire and the like.
But, don't let that get you down, though. Worthy of at least a rental. This is a game that proves you don't need fancy graphics or ultra-sophisticated controls to play.
ALSO: Make sure you get 3, I don't believe 4 or 5 have Co-op.
I know for sure that 4 doesn't.
OVERALL: **** / *****
Hunter The Reckoning
Alright, now we're onto a fun one:
STORY:
Evil corporation is raising demons. Enter you. Your job is to save the world. Vampires, Zombies, and Demons, oh my!
** / *****
GAMEPLAY:
Back to the old school, it's Gauntlet style, baby! Yes, overhead cameras make yet another return in this game.
Swordplay, Gunplay, and Magic are the tools of your death-dealing trade. The more you use a certain attribute, the more it improves. The bosses and enemies vary and there are certainly a lot of them. There aren't many mission-types, most revolving around item fetches, switch-pullings, and escort missions. Argh. But, it is a solid package.
**** / *****
GRAPHICS:
They're alright, environments look suitably gloomy and the atmosphere will have one shivering in the dark in no time.
*** / *****
SOUND:
The music is so-so, but the sound effects are good. The voice acting, however, is terrible. I mean it. Like a verbal assault on your ears.
** / *****
Downside:
Can get extremely hard if you don't stick to one, primary mode of killing stuff. Don't attempt to switch from swordplay to gunplay to magick, lest you want to be devoured by a horde of dead stuff. The game can also be too short, depening on what you consider short, (about 6 hrs).
Overall:
*** / *****

Excuse me, I realize now that the 4th one does. 5 doesn't, that's what I infer from the internet. And in comparison to the 3rd, 4th is a little bit of a downgrade. That's just my opinion.
And as for the Romance of The Three Kingdoms, I wasn't aware there was a copy of it for the X-Box. My bro owns the 8th one. I know the story. But we're talking about Dynasty Warriors. Dynasty Warriors doesn't have much in the way of story. If you want to flesh out the back story of the whole thing, by all means, buy RotTK, but it was specified to me that he wanted:
A) An X-Box game
and
B) A game with co-op that isn't too hard, but not too kiddie.
Dynasty Warriors 3 (and if you want, 4 or maybe 5) fulfills those parameters.

Excuse me, I realize you might be a dumbass, but I'll go ahead and post a tiny post of my earliar.
I have Dynasty Warriors 5, it is a great game, the Co-op is awesome.
It saddly does not have much of a story line IN-GAME.
Now, if you are like IS and my friend Noah, go buy Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and it fills you in with the backstory of the entire region and how the 3 competing kingdoms created a balance and peace that was unknown for many years.
