View Full Version : Spider Night Fights

One of the perks of living in Okinawa is the interesting types of wildlife that make the jungle island it's home, most notably the spiders.

The other a good freind of mine was doing laundry in our dorm when he came across a large Huntsman spider crawling across the floor. He found a jar and captured it, keeping it in his room for the night. The next day we went to a pet store nearby and after talking to an employee who spoke fairly good english, he explained a bit about our new pet such as it's name, diet, habitat, etc. My freind decided to keep it as a pet so he bought a small cage and some crickets. We filled the cage with some sand and coral rocks from the beach. Our new freind Sheetarr the female Huntsman Spider now had a home.

Later we tossed a fat juicy cricket in the cage and within moments the non web spinning hunter sunk it's fangs in the cricket and began sucking the precious juices from within. It was as the NES game of the same name, "Totally Rad". Impressed with the Huntsman's prowress another freind of ours captured a large Orb Weaver Banana Spider which called the outside 2nd floor stairwell home.

With the Huntsman still feeding on the cricket (it didn't get rid of the damn thing untill sometime during the middle of the night), we threw the Banana Spider in the cage hoping the two would duke it out immediately. The Huntsman merely kicked his legs at the bewildered and confused Banana Spider everytime it ambled his way. The Huntsman was more concerned with it's freshly caught meal while the panicky Banana Spider was desperately trying to find a way out.

TAfter 20 minutes of poking and prodding the two beatss with a knife, we gave up and seperated them into their respective cages, with plans to have the two hungry spiders square off to the death on Friday Night.

Also, today at work I found another larger and more aggressive Banana Spider which will be facing the winner of the first fight. In the future, we hope to pit the Huntsman against two Banana Spiders and if it survives that round hopefully a Praying Mantis (i've found two in the past few weeks here).

There is now an additonal Banana Spider. Last night we threw both Banana Spiders into the Huntsman's cage but the Huntman chilled in the corner while the two Banana Spiders panickly tried to find a way out of the cage. Another freind of ours who's an entemoligist(sp?) for the Air Force said that we have to starve them for several more days before they will actually fight. Either way, the blood of arachnids will be shed.

Do they have vinegaroons in Japan?

Edit: Nevermind, there are Asian Vinegaroons.

You shoulg get one of those and throw them in the cage. They'll tear anything to bits, I've seen it happen. If you do happen to find and catch one, be careful. They're dangerous.

I wouldn't worry about the one on the bottom, as it is a Mexican Whip Scorpion.

"Vinegaroons, or whip scorpions, are venomless arachnids that release an acetic acid substance when molested. This is the same type of acid as vinegar, hence the name. They do not bite, so please quit spreading this silly vicious rumor about a harmless, though somewhat frightening looking relative of spiders and scorpions." - Whatsthatbug.com

release an acetic acid substance when molested.

Best. Quote. Ever.

Sadly Spider Night Fights did not go down as planned on Friday. My entemology freind told me that these things most likely won't fight each other because they simply are not hungry. He said it would be best if we waited a few more days and gave it another shot. The plan is to have the battle go down on tuesday night, Japan time. I'll be taking plenty of pics as well as a short video of the winner gorging on the fallen opponent.

It's late Tuesday night and the first successful Spider Night Fights went off without a hitch.

Sheetarr, the brown Huntsman, waited hungrily on the side of the cage while we dumped the equally starved Waldo the Banana Spider into the arena. As you can see in the video, both stood motionless for a few moments and after a bit of prodding, the combatants locked their figurative horns. We prodded the Banana Spider with a knife, which it responded to the nudging by backing up into the perched Huntsman. The Huntsman dropped on top of it and the fight was on. After a brief entanglement which had both spiders on top of each other, it was Sheetarr who came out the victor. Sadly the Banana Spider didn't put up much of a fight at all. Within a few seconds, the Huntsman had the poor Banana Spider in it's pincers and was undoubtedly pumping loades of venom into the poor thing. Comfortable with it's kill, the Huntsman crabwalked (these things can walk sideways :eek) back onto the side of the cage.

Being the bloodlusting males that we are, my freinds and I decided to throw the second and fairly larger Banana Spider into the mix. My freind who was prodding the two fighters with the knife accidently knocked the Huntsman's freshly caught dinner out of it's pincers. This rattled the killer as it simply ran into the corner and everytime the new Banana Spider came near it scuttled away, probably because it was extremely pissed off by us fucking up it's meal.

In all fairness we didn't expect the Banana Spider to win. After all, it is an Orb Weaver and was very much out of it's element crawling around on the sand. But we did expect it to put up an actual fight as they are very worthy combatants while on their web.

After a few mins we seperated the two back to their appropriate cages. We took out the lifeless Waldo and threw him in the trash where he'll rest for all eternity.

The next Spider Night Fights will take place this Friday Japan time between Sheetarr and Scurvy the Banana Spider who are probably dealing with hunger pains. Who will come out on top?

The battle between the Huntsman and the centipede went down last night with terrible results. We threw the centipede in the cage and it proceeded to ran laps around the cage while the Huntsman waited on the side of the glass. Everytime the 'pede crawled underneath it the Spider darted at it but retreated each time. I think it was confused as to how to kill the damn thing. Each time the spider touched the centipede the damn thing would feign death for several minutes. We tried getting the two to fight by prodding them with a knife but even that didn't work. After 20 minutes or so we gave up and seperated them. Some pretty weak shit.

The plan for next week is to find something other than a banana spider so that we can continue this great sport of Spider Night Fights.

Sine the Huntsman hadn't eaten anything in about 2 weeks I decided to feed it a small cockroach that decided it would be a good idea to crawl up my wall. It perches itself on the wall and stays absolutely still for what seems like forever, then in lightning quick speed it captures the unsuspecting roach in it's pincers and it's all over from there.

Also, the Huntsman would've just ended whatever fight a cockroach has in about 7 seconds :/

Living in Iowa, I have to deal with Brown Recluse alot. I have extreme arachniphobia, and being around one of the world's most dangerous spiders almost all of the time makes me live in fear of my attic and dark parts of my basement.

ArrowX

It takes about 2 minutes for the brown recluses bite to swell to the size of a softball and get all gangreeny. A buddy of mine in southern Manitoba was bitten by a Black widow when he was 12, he came oh so close to dying (complications du to the facthes alergic to all manner of insect stings) the worst part about a BLack widow bite is that it almost indestingushable from a mosquito bite unless you have a reaction to it.

Spider Night Fights went down tonight and although the opponent was merely a smaller version of our champion and had his ass handed to him, we did have one interesting moment. While I was prodding the challenger towards the larger critter it nearly got out. I shut the lid and sliced two of his legs clean off. So now the 6 legged spider was easy pickings for the larger Huntsman. The fight, if you even want to call it that, lasted about 5 seconds. And sadly, my freind was taking pictures of the two when suddenly the champion darted towards the 6 legger and attacked it. By the time my freind switched over to video mode the Huntsman had already perched itself on the wall with his meal in it's pincers. So the video I'm posting is nothing exciting at all; it's just the champion feeding on the smaller version of itself. No moneyshot.

I've been told by another freind that a large black and red spider, bigger than the banana spiders we've found has been spotted near a munitions storage building nearby our shop. Tomorrow I plan on going over there and catpuring the guy. Hopefully he'll put up a good fight because we're getting pretty bored with the Huntsman winning so easily.

I got a spider bite on my chest in Georgia. It swelled up to about the size of a large marble and turned bright red. Over the next few days, inflamed red lines began trailing away from the bite down towards my arm and across my chest. Did I go to the doctor? I did not, sir. I did not wish to interupt my vacation. In about a week the trails stopped growing, and the whole thing eventually went away.

In retrospect, I may have been foolhardy.

And I am still waiting for a spider fight filmed on location in your pants.

For those that are still interested, Spider Night Fights went down once again. And once again, the Original Huntsman, who has now been renamed "The Spider With No Name", came out on top. The opponent for tonight was a fellow Huntsman once again, but this one was larger than the last and proved to be a formidable foe.

We threw the challenger into the champions age and immediately the battle started. The two tangled and tussled three times before retreating to their corner to reasses the situation. Of course, they can't ever escape the prodding knife that my bloodlusting freind from the first video was wielding. I'll let the video explain the rest of the battle. It starts off about half way through the actual fight.

The next fight is scheduled to take place friday morning Japan time. There are two possible opponents. The first being a red and black spider my friends caught that looks very similiar to a banana spider, but the local nationals that work in my shop said there aren't any banana spiders marked like that. I don't know what it's called but many people have told me that it's the deadliest spider on the island. The other possible challenger is another banana spider, but this one is special. A friend and I found it in the jungle the other day and wow, this thing is HUGE. Bigger than any spider i've seen here. This thing's thorax is much much larger than normal and it will be interesting to see this fight because of the size of the banana spider. We'll try to capture this massive arachnid tomorrow.

Spider Night Fights went down as planned and about the only word I can use that fully describes the pure mayhem that went down is WOW. Tonights bout was actually a 3 way battle royale involving the Champion, a smaller Huntsman that was carrying an egg sac, and the massive Queen Banana Spider. I'll post videos and pics when I get them from my friends camera tomorrow because as of now he's passed out. I'll give a teaser recap and say that after the egg sac chaning hands and the Banana Spider losing a leg and killing an opponent, the Spider With No Name remains on top.

The cage resembles a battlefield worthy of Civil War comparisons. Two bodies, an egg sac and a few limbs are strewn about the sand while the Champion silently remains perched on top. This was by far the best Spider Fight Nights as of yet.

I'm telling you, man. The Vinegaroon/Whip Scorpion is the way to go. They'll tear the shit out of anything. My friend's dad doused one in gasoline and lit it on fire. It took five minutes before it died.

So where's the video, gayman?

Sorry, Gaymaster Flex. The actual fight lasted around two hours and several videos were shot. To be honest I was quite lazy and didn't feel like editing them. The pictures were quite blurry as well so you miss out on that too.

BUT...

We have a praying mantis.

The plan is to fight them on saturday night, my time.

I'll start off by saying that I've got alot of guts coming back here because you gracious and ever so patient folks won't like the news that i've got....

THE FIGHT NEVER WENT DOWN. THE MANTIS DIED.

Yes, the Mantis died the night before the fight was supposed to go down. My buddy, the same guy with the frighteningly evil face in the first video, decided it would be a great idea to draw a fuckin' smiley face on the thorax of the mantis. 2 hours later it was dead, we suspect from some sort of ink poisoning as the smiley face had faded noticeably. Trust me, I was pissed. It's not often that we come across those things, although they are common.

The fight was hyped up here as well. In my defense, i've done my part as a promoter (as far as Okinawa is concerned. Here is a different story.) My buddy on the other hand, has been terrible. His dumb ass centipede wouldn't fight and every other spider he's got has been killed in just a few mins. He talks a big game but can never deliver the food to the figurative table. My apologies loyal Spider Night Fights fans. :(

Here are some pics of the Mantis anyway:

Oh, what could of been...

As far as the last fight? It lasted for roughly 2 hours and since we are filming the videos on my other friends digital camera, we can only take 2 min clips at a time. This poses a problem, because since we can't predict exactly when the kill will go down, we have to constantly film and then restart every 2 minutes. This leaves many many clips to sift through and edit. That, coupled with the fact that we were quite drunk when the fight went down equals crappy footage and blurry pictures. There are just too many crappy and blurry pics and crappy footage to even put forth the time. There were a few great moments in the fight though. I'll give you a recap of what happened:

-The giant Banana Spider was farely immobile and mostly stayed in the middle while the Champion wanted nothing to do with it. After a short time of inactivity we upped the ante and threw a slightly smaller Huntsman carrying an egg sac that resembled a Shock Tart. For a while they wouldn't do anything at all, that was untill I kept poking the Banana Spider with a wooden spoon. That pissed him off royally. It's pincers tried in vain to bite into the wood but I would just hit him with it and he'd back off. Eventually we got the Champion to go after the egg sac carrier. This was interesting. The Champion, instead of going for the kill, instead bit into the egg sac, which resulted in the two spiders running around trying to secure control of the precious babies. The struggle ended with the Champion gaining control of the sac, which it carried underneath it's body as if it was going to take care of it...

-At one point the Banana Spider tried to escape, which resulted in me slamming the lid shit and slicing a leg clean off. A greenish translucent goo oozed out of the wound, but that didn't stop the Banana Spider. Pissed off, it crawled across the cage towards the smaller Huntsman and proceeded to literally stab the shit out of it's head with it's huge pincers. White stuff started to ooze out of the wounds and a minute or so later the small Huntsman was dead.

A while passed and we grew very bored so we went out for a cigarette. Upon our return approximently 5 minutes later, the Banana Spider was curled on it's side. It was dead. And there sat perched the Champion. Victor of the Battle Royale and with a brand spankin' new egg sac as a trophy!

A few days passed and I pulled the cage out to see the Champion. He had dropped the egg sac, which was now laying in the sand amidst two corpes and a severed leg. Also, the cage reeked. The Banana Spdier was rotting. Using two pens as chopsticks, I pulled the Banana Spider out and noticed that a quarter inch length of it's underside had been sliced open. The greenish ooze had dried up around it. The death of the Banana Spider was not of a severed leg like we initially thought. It appears to have been from the thorax wound. We don't know who actually caused the wound as both Huntsman tangled briefly with it a few times during the 2 hour melee. I flushed the Queen Banana Spider and the Huntsman egg sac down the toilet. A proper burial indeed.

After all this I'm convinced that my Huntsman is invincible. Well, not actually invincible, but fate is on his side. Either that or my buddy is an idiot for drawing a fuckin' smiley face on the back of a praying mantis.

We're not quite sure what's next for Spider Night Fights. The death of the mantis really killed alot of the excitement over here. The mantis was seen as the pinnacle of Spider Fight Nights and since we missed the opportunity for a great fight, nothing less will do. Also, I haven't fed the Champion in over a week and a half.

More to come if anything develops.

theMAntis would have morelikely suffocated than died of poisoning, drawing on it is like taping parts of your lungs down

Since insects don't have a respritory system per sae they diffuse oxygen through their exoskeleton, so the ink probably blocked off the openings in the exoskeleton after it absorbed into the mantis..

FUN FACT: insects size in tropical/or forested areas (I assume thats where you found the mantis.) is dependant on oxygen concentration, cuz of all that diffusion jazz

Keep those britches on your phat phannies because right now, as I type out this message, there is a praying mantis in the cage with the Huntsman.

Sad news to report.

I wake up this morning and sit down in my computer chair and take a glance at the spider cage. One problem. There is no spider, only the mantis. My worst fears were confirmed when I noticed two and a half legs directly underneath the mantis (he was perched upside down on the lid of the cage).

So yeah, the Huntsman finally went down, undoubtedly a great meal for the mantis. Let us all take 14 minutes of silence to reflect upon what an amazing warrior, tactician, and friend the Huntsman was. Oh, the memories. :( :( :(

It's probably easy for a mantis to kill a spider since the spider mouths are on the belly ;/

WhiteRat
Aug 19th, 2006, 01:46 PM
24 hour survellance would be very beneficial. But, I had the two creatures in the same cage for a few days and to be honest I felt comfortable with both together like that. They seemingly had no intention to fight. Now, I know that eventually they would of brawled but I guess I was hoping that they would fight when I was awake and had a camera nearby. LONG LIVE THE KING.

The Spider Night Fights as you know it is no more. The Mantis that killed my spider will soon be fed to a friend's scorpion. For one, it's not entertaining. With the spider, I would get off of work and pull the cage out my desk drawer and it would start running around. It was interesting to watch and was quite active. The Mantis on the other hand, simply sits perched upside down in the corner and doesn't move. I think i've seen it move twice in the past few weeks, and one of the times was when it was devouring a large orange moth (which I will post pics of when I get back from the US).

I plan on filming the scorpion slaughtering the Mantis. I'll post the video on YouTube and any pics of it I'll put up here. After that, the Fights are over.

Keep in mind that i'll be in the States for about a month so I won't have access to any of the moth eating pics untill mid october. BTW, I still need to edit and post the video of the three way battle that took place back in August. That will come later as well.
