mozart's requiem mass (http://rapidshare.de/files/25811254/Mozart_-_Requiem_Mass.mp3.html)

download these and become better people who I will probably still hate anyway.

i started to type out a reply asking why you would assume that there's anyone in the world who doesn't already have those recordings in a hundred different incarnations, but then i remembered that just below this thread there's an argument going on about the aquabats.
so i commend your effort, but i'm afraid it's too late. these people are hopeless.

obviously you don't, willie, and you will not be spared.

I wasn't sure whether to make this thread about classical music or standards at first, but I was listening to Rachmaninoff as I was typing and decided that Sinatra can wait :<

Snobs don't know what they like, just what they're supposed to like.

For a while I used to buy and download masses and masses of music because I thought I enjoyed listening to all of it, but pretty soon I realised that I just loved collecting and talking about it. [Good] music needs to be listened to over and over again to be fully absorbed and enjoyed, and listening to a thousand and one bands spreads listening time too thin. So I slowed down a little and I'm starting to realise again what I loved so much about music in the first place.

So now I lay off the band name-dropping a little more.

I think you know what I mean.

make a thread about standards.
then watch as i attempt to recollect second hand knowledge from my girlfriend, who basically introduced me to it and it's the only music she listens to with regularity.

glowbelly of course will take over.

The only piece of classical music I have found and actually really liked is "Shubert - No. 2 in A flat Allegretto" on a CD called "4 Impromptus Op.142 D.945".

It's not classical, but I enjoy Kronos Quartet. They did a beautiful soundtrack for Requiem

I hate hate HATE that self-perceived counter-cultural prententicons worship it for its place in A Clockwork Orange, but a good performance of Beethoven's choral rendition of "An Die Freud" (the final movement of what I think is his Ninth Symphony) is a life-affirming experience in audio form. Hence, it's also just about the most popular melody in existence (although Beethoven's Fifth was purported to be the most easily-recognized) and is the anthem of the EU.

Other classics on my playlist are Mozart's Requiem (you really can't over-state its necessity), The Great Gate of Kiev, Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin (not really classical, but it belongs here), and playing LOOM all those years in my youth made me really love Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.
