I would suggest Zone of Enders, Robot Alchemic Drive (though the anime subplots/side missions in R.A.D. will drive you insane. "Why the f*ck do I have to run across town and buy miso soup ingredients in a giant robot game?!"), Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Ace Combat 4, War of the Monsters, and Viewtiful Joe.

Any and all Legacy of Kain games (except Blood Omen 2). The list is as follows:
Blood Omen
Soul Reaver
Soul Reaver 2
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Blood Omen 2 wasn't TERRIBLE, it just didn't really have all that much to do with the story arc until the very end. But for storytelling, you can't get much better than these games, and the gameplay, while simplistic in all but Defiance, is still satisfying.

I'd also say some dynasty warriors might be in order

Yeah, mostly Sands of Time. That's a good game.
Get the newest Dynasty Warriors you know of, too.
Dynasty Warriors 5, I think.
Otherwise, you pretty much got most of them covered.

The Ratchet and Clank series are really fun 3rd person shooters, but the newest one kinda...sucked. In comparison.
Final Fantasy X is good if you're into that type of RPG, and FF XII is coming out Halloween :faint
Don't forget about Katamari Damacy too...

The Timesplitters Series, The Shadow Hearts Series, Kinetica, The Onimusha Series inclding Blade Warriors, Vampire Night, Gungrave and Gungrave: Overdose, Burnout Revenge, Shinobi, Nightshade, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, RPG Maker 3, Evil Dead: Regeneration, the Ratchet and Clank Series, Red Faction II, Alien Hominid, Auto Modellista, ROBOT ALCHEMIC DRIVE, Midway Arcade Treasures (1, 2, and 3), Black, Blood Will Tell, Chaos Legion, Darkwatch, Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest VII: Journey of the Cursed King, the Drakengards, Fantavision, Twisted Metal Black, Freedom Fighters, Front Mission 4, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, The Getaway and The Getaway: Black Monday, ICO, Indigo Prophecy, Jade Cocoon 2, Katamari Damacy (duh), The Mark of Kri, both Max Paynes, both Maximos, MDK2 Armageddon, Mercenaries, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Mister Mosquito, Mortal Kombat: Deception, Nanobreaker, Okage: Shadow King, the upcoming Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, Primal, Psychonauts, Rygar: The Legendary Adventure, Smuggler's Run 2: Hostile Territory, Spyhunter 2, SSX 3, Transformers, Virtual-On Marz, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, Wild Arms 3 and 4, and Xenosaga Episodes I and II.
Hope I didn't tire you out. The series and the games I've included with sequals tend to be best. The Shadow Hearts seriesis different because it's hard to find the original while the 2nd and 3rd are plentiful. The Onimusha series is my favourite game series ever and the little extras and specials and the amount of gameplay keep me coming back to this day. The Getaway series and Indigo Prophecy are some of the most cinematic games I've ever seen, they are both beautiful and worth their weight in gold. Vampire Night is like the Time Crisis series, only with Vampires. Gungrave is great if you just want to blow shit up for an hour. Robot Alchemic Drive is the most accurate giant mech simulator I've ever seen.
There. Those are my recommendations and I hope you take them into account when making your game purchases.

Yeah, like Fathom said, if you're getting MGS 3, get MGS 3: Subsistance. It's only $20, and is better, and online. Plus, it has the old Metal Gear and MG2 for the MSX
Another game that you NEED to get is Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

ok I probably should have said this in the first place, but if there is a game that is on both the PS2 and the gamecube like RE4 and Beyond good and evil, I probably already have it on the gamecube, and if I don't I'm sure as hell not getting it on the PS2 because inferior graphics and loading times are no fun at all.
Also, I know all about the MGS remix thing and am definantly getting Subsistance.
Oh, and I'll probably pick up that half-life remake too.
and fuck viewtiful joe, that game is shit and I would not fuck with it if I was paid to.

If you like horror games, get Siren. That is possibly my favorite game for the PS2. Very innovative story-telling style, amazing graphics, excellant level design. You'll get sucked right in.

All of the useless items that may just be important throughout the game are a pain in the ass.

Fatal Frame has special mechanics, and can't be compared to those two games, since it doesn't involve blowing brains out.

if you want the REAL poor mans resident evil get Michigan, where you play as a cameraman following a reporter around a virus infested chicago, and you get bonus points for getting gory shots, or sexy shots of the reporter
its basicly really poor, but hilarious all the same, get it for cheap and prepare for fun

YES, but does it involve Blowing Zombie Brains Out? I think not.

That's why I refrained from making many other decisions like RE4 and Beyond Good and Evil. Thankfully, games released on two and even three systems simultaneously tend to be not as good as those released on a single console. RE4 and BGandE are exceptions.
I also want to add Shoadow of Destiny to the list, if you like adventure games, that is. I'd like you to consider Sly Cooper, too.

Just from the description, it sounds like a crappy game. "What, you just roll crap up and you get bigger...so you can roll more stuff up"
But when you start getting revenge on that damn bulldog that was kicking you around, and then picking up a bunch of screaming schoolgirls, and then a construction site and eventually islands and lands, it somehow becomes really addicting :/
