View Full Version : First time firing a gun

I fired a gun for the first time at a shooting range a couple of weeks ago. I only wanted to do it to find out what the crack was and I just don't understand the love and excitement. What freaked me the most was buying 50 bullets in a supermarket for a mere $7 with less grief than buying beer. I can't believe that age 34 I have to show my passport as did anyone stood near me even if they weren't buying beer. My travelling companion was even asked to speak french lest he was carrying a fake french passport.
Driving on the wong side of the road in an automatic though, now that's scary.
America is freaky.

That's interesting. So wait, you where in the US and buying the bullets when they asked you to do that?
Little confused as your profile says you're in the UK, that's all.
What did you think? What kind of gun did you fire?
I've shot a .22 rifle and a shotgun a couple of times. Always wanted to try and handgun or something. Just to see.
It's weird, actually doing it, isn't it?

My friend's family owns a gun shop, and according to him women have better innate ability to aim well because of pulse rate and blood pressure and girl magic. Because of that, he advises his customers to never take their wives to the range unless they want to be embarrassed!

I just got 80 rounds for my M44 rifle, and have about 60 rounds of 9mm laying around the house somewhere. Going to go shooting again soon.

I was visiting the Minnepolis/Chicago/Milwaukee when it came up during a drunken July 4th Party that I'd been to a hick bar, driven on the wrong side of the road, ate at various fast food joints, bought a cowboy hat, visited the Mall Of America and ridden western style on a horse. All that was left to do was fire a gun and then I was practically an american!
Apparantly I shot a Ruger P95 DK

I would say start somewhere really quiet, because Americans also have freaky road signs and traffic lights. The hardest part is changing your habits when looking behind you before you pull out or manoeuvre, you naturally look one way and you have to think about where you're looking a whole lot harder. So drive somewhere where it's open without too much pressure if that's possible.

I had a firearms instructor say that same thing about women being better shots, but that was because they listen to the instructors when they're talking about holding the gun, assuming the correct stance, etc.
Also, it's probably worth mentioning that the instructor was a woman.

Accuracy is all about consistency. Do the same thing each time and you will be consistently accurate. I shoot all the time and can't understand why people think it's so hard. Squeeze, don't pull. Breathe twice; hold wile exhaling second breath, fire. Do this in memory of me. This is the Word of the Lord.

Aye.
Squeeze slowly, the first 3-10 rounds should suprise you when it fires.
After that, you know when the gun trigger shoots, and you can start practicing breathing out before shooting.
Breath out and hold. 3,2,1, fire.
Oh, and the hell with your backward britishness. The rest of the world drives on the right side of the road. Only you and the Japs drive left.
What is with you Island nations driving left? you think your better? Well, let me tell ya something. America, while gun happy nutters, has kicked both you and the Jap's Ass in Wars.
heh, jk. Hope you had a blast visiting us on our day of independence from the hated redcoats.

Reason being because in ye olde days you carried your sword in the right hand and needed it handy lest the person you passed wanted a fight. Those that travel on the right tended to have been invaded by the left handed Napoleon.

You might fight with your righthand, but you cross-draw from the left.
So women stand to the right, leaving you the open space on your left to draw.
But honestly, how many of those countries you listed truely matter?
And Hong Kong is a city.

The quiet-est gun I'd think of firing in the suburbs is my automatic aerosoft ( b.b.) STG.
But I don't have a tank or ammo for my paintball gun, so I just clean it out every day.

Well next time I was thinking Arizona and Texas. Got friends to harrass there too.
The thing that cracked up up the most - lots of things did - was the amount of americans that asked me to keep on talking, about anything, they just loved hearing the accent. Weirdos.

Aug 10th, 2006, 06:13 PM
Aye, we love accents. Except asian, mexican, russian...
Anyway, I have noticed this also. I have a strange accent which I picked up due to my parents thinking it was cute when I misspronounced words and never correcting me in my youth.
People think I'm from another country at times.

My mum got to fire the actual mock Uzi that fell down the stairs and killed everyone in True Lies.
As for firing a gun myself, I shot a BB Gun years ago. My friend keeps wanting to teach me how, but I don't trust myself enough to play safe with it.

I saw Jocks. I saw goths shopping in Hot Topic (I'd only heard of this place when people were abusing each other on the net). I met a marine and he was very nice. I saw an american farm and american corn that was knee high on the fourth of July.
I saw no animal house antics, but went to a fourth of July house party that was full of what can only be described as american chavs. And what really shocked me is that young american men really do wear white socks pulled up their shins, about half way to their knees. I always thought this was a nasty UK stereotype. They even wear them with sandals!!!

but i like white trainers
I always imagined american chavs would be yokel types with a pick-up truck up on bricks and washing machines in their front gardens (sorry PORCH). And as for that whole sock/sandal debacle, I thought that was strictly a paedophile/bird-enthusiast thing. I didn't realise it was fashionable in some parts of the world. Sounds like you lived the American dream anyway. Hopefully i'll be able to shoot a magnum and stuff in Prague for my 21st, making me more thug life than 75% of UK rappers.

The nice thing about the US is that they let me own what is essentially an assault rifle but so long as I don't make certain modifications to the gun it is not considered legally as an assault rifle.

my pal went down to a gun range and got to fire off a Desert Eagle, the .50AE cartrige, none of that pussy .357 crap. But he held it wrong so as the recoil hit him the gun slipped out of his hand and the Hammer took a chunk out of his eyebrow.

Desert Eagles are literally the worst gun on single-fire recoil.
I wonder if anything in the Machine Gun Class is legal (M60, M63) :/

i know you can get a browning MG .50 caliber rifle (single shot) in most states
in montana i believe you can get full-auto machine guns as long as they are for "home defense" :lol
Sethomas
Aug 15th, 2006, 03:23 PM
You can own or, with certain red tape, trade most any machine gun so long as it was manufactured and registered before a certain date, 1978 I think. At least that knowledge is one thing I think I've gained from Zach.
