View Full Version : Metal Bands You Hate

Slayer has been irking me a lot lately. It seems i can't look up anything about an 80's metal band without hearing some horseshit about how great slayer is. I find the band to be horribly overrated. They don't sound that great at all. The vocals stand out too much from the music, and the singer has no rhythm. Not to say some of the bands i listen to are very rythmic in singing, but christ, this guy just plain SUCKS. The band did a lot for death metal, helping to establish this bastard child of a genre that we have today, and i'll give them credit where it's due. I honestly just can't stand this band. The same goes for Venom. I tried to like that band, but the music is just so horrible. I even listened to what's one of my favorite Obituary songs (yes, i know they covered Venom's song), and i could not stand to finish it. The music takes such a background presence, and the singer is just plain terrible. I hate it when bands have the vocalist be the centerfold of the music. Call me a freak, but i think it's fucking boring. I find that these two bands (they did help invent genres, and they deserve credit for such) are just far, FAR too overrated to be as good as i've heard them spoke of as.

Slayer does have a lot of lame ass songs but when I hear the lightning at the begining of Raining Blood or the opening part to south of heaven I just get the warm happy feeling inside.

The only thing I ever liked from Slayer was the undisputed attitude album. Slayer would have made a pretty rad punk band if you ask me....

There's nothing to be ashamed for not liking Slayer, in my oppinion. Never liked them either. Esp. the lyric appoach, but even the structure of their songs seems so random to me it hurts.
But I like Sacred Reich, which are said to be a slayer clone. Dunno.

old slayer good, chemical warfare was awesome. and venom is an acquired taste, i personally love venom. but as for bands i hate? there isn't enough time for me to list them all, and that does include EVERY nu metal band ever. i may be too picky but hey at least i have good taste for the most part.

Yeah, I can't get THAT into Venom. They sure had a positive effect on what direction metal took for many bands, and I respect that and own their first 3 albums. Same with Slayer. I dont like Slayer all that much and it's probably because of this hype we're talking about. They didn't invent Death Metal but it's arguable that they made it possible, and I acknowledge that as well. But I'd like credit to also be given to other goddamned metal bands, and none of them receive the praise that slayer does. Not the old school Thrash bands, not the Death Metal bands, and not the Black Metal bands either. Popular as they are, bands crucia to the spawning of Death Metal like Kreator, Celtic Frost, etc. will always seem like unsung heroes compared to Slayer, and that's fucking sad.
I can't say I think Araya's vocals were meant to be the focal point of Slayers music, but I do agree that bands should try to allow everything to be a group effort. Equally irritating is the fact that people seem to prefer Kerry King over Jeff Hanneman so readily(never mind that Hanneman wrote all the early riffs and half the solos.) Do they like him more 'cause he was extreme enough to put more swastikas on his axe? Beats the hell out of me.
Anway, yeah, there ARE metal bands after 1980 other than Slayer, and the world doesn't realize it as much as they should.
Did I mention I fucking hate Pantera more than any band on earth? Overrated would be putting it mildly.

Glad to hear it. Of course, I'll spare you any tirades on them I'm tempted to spew out here for now. *resists urge to mention Metal Magic*
Yes, I agree, I'd much rather hear Slayer than any Nu-Metal band, for many obvious reasons. I feel the same way about them as a band as I do Fight Club as a film: so much hype that I'll never know how much I would've liked them otherwise.

Gwar kicks ass. I just bought their This Toilet Earth CD, so Im kinda reliving old times made happier with the involvement of Gwar. Like a Gwar concert. Now that would suck without Gwar, for sure, even if it was my GF and mine's first "date"... now I need some money to get that Gwarchive DVD...

I don't really hate any metal band but I do think their are several that are far to overrated metallica, (megadeth I think didnt get the credit they deserved), pantera,( I think power metal is probably their best and thats sad figuring its half cock rock half wannabe thrash metal album), type o negative, and cradle of filth (just listen to them) well thats about all I can think of I'm sure theres more but I don't listen to much metal.

I hate:
Nu-Metal
Metallica
Dying Fetus (even if the name is hilarious)
Cannibal Corpse
Cradle of Filth (the guy sounds like a leprechaun)
I love:
In Flames
Children of Bodom
Type O Negative (I never considered them real metal, but they were mentioned earlier)
Faith No More
Minibosses (geek metal!)
Opeth
Megadeth
I'm not too into death metal for this reason: the growling is too much. Yes, some of the bands I've mentioned have the growl... but the other aspects of it are so good that I don't care. I hate it when the music is just a bunch of overly distorted chords and growls. Sometimes I don't even know if those bands write lyrics... it seems like they could just do random noises and it'd sound the same.
Queefer Sutherland
Apr 18th, 2003, 02:32 AM
Kind of a vague declaration. Either you're saying you simply hate harsher punk, or you're saying that all metal has to have lots of chords in it...not to start a brawl, but I just don't get it. :(
EatTheChildren
Apr 18th, 2003, 10:12 AM
Yeah, it is vague. I get what you're saying. I don't know much about these new metal sub-genres, though... I have no idea what you actually call what I'm trying to describe. I think it might be grindcore... I think. I'm talking about bands like Dying Fetus.
When it comes to metal as a scene I have no clue whats going on.
CastroMotorOil
Apr 18th, 2003, 11:11 AM
I can see where you are coming from eat, i sometimes get confused with all of the subgenres myself. the hardcore growling stuff is fun but i like for there to be SOME message behind the music. a LOT of bands do that but it seems like every "nu-metal" band says nothing and tries to act like KoRn but "heavier" when the singer grew up in suburban america and never had any problems.

Watch Cannibal Corpse's "Sentenced To Burn" video all the way through, Eat. You'll see why people like them. It's okay though, the band sounds better with Corpsegrinder, so if you heard Barnes, chances are they'll be dead to you. :/

You're referring to whine-metal. I HATE whine-metal. When someone is 25 and still whining about his/her teenage years they're pathetic.
Watch Cannibal Corpse's "Sentenced To Burn" video all the way through, Eat. You'll see why people like them.
Think I could find it on Kazaa? Hopefully is is gorey.
Although I don't like to listen to growling, it sure is fun to do. I've got a pretty good death growl for a girl.. ha.

Aye, you'll find it on kazaa. It's not really gory, (try Ogrish (http://www.ogrish.com) for that), but the video itself is really nice, and the song kicks ass. Once you hear the long "Sentenced... To.... BUUUURRRRN, you'll know you made the right choice.

Queefer Sutherland
Apr 28th, 2003, 01:20 AM
Yeah, Glen Benton does take himself seriously, but they DID make some decent music, especially Legion. I think saying he makes Manson look tame is a bit harsh; Benton at least isn't a fuck puppet of the LaVeyan CoS, and in interviews he expresses that he damn well knows what a sham they are.
UnDeath
Apr 28th, 2003, 02:29 AM
LaVeyans are funny. Kinda defeats the purpose of the CoS if you take one's words as dogma. Taking advice and giving credit where its due is one thing, but blind faith is another. Ah well, CoB all the way, since the smaller the group, the more likely you're in a group of similar minded people.
Back on track, Slipknot and Disturbed and just about any other nu metal band is quite hateworthy.
CastroMotorOil
Apr 28th, 2003, 03:26 AM

Skulhedface
Apr 28th, 2003, 04:52 AM
Speaking as a guitar player, the only thing not to hate about nu-metal at ALL is that if you know how to play by ear, then all you hafta to is listen to this shit once and you know how to play it. There is a certain satisfaction in knowing you can learn yet another song... but I guess that's ruined by the fact that all you've learned was a shitty song.
But I can still play the Tetris theme >:

Disturbed would be ok if they werent considered the "heavy" side of the MTV culture. That and if they had more talent. I can play the guitar parts on a few of their songs, and Im a fucking drummer... And the vocals leave something to be desired. PSH! what the hell am I saying?! Why write lyrics when you can just make animal noises into a mic half the damn time!?

Grindcore is one thing, its meant to be fast and barely understandable. Disturbed is a lot cleaner and slower, which means that they arent hiding how much they suck. That, and I dont like Grindcore all that much, most of it sounds the same to me.

I do hate all this new metal that's out right now. Well not so much hate the band, but hate the way all the kids dub it "The heaviest and most brutal metal ever" And when I tell people I'm into metal they automatically think of Slipknot and all that other crap.
On the Slayer issue I dont like nor dislike them. I just find them overatted and y'allways come across some "more metal than thou" goit who will argue for hours that Slayer are the best band on earth.

Does anyone else but me just not like Sodom? I like some of their other thrash counterparts such as Kreator and some Exodus. But Sodom just plain suck and yet are always talked about with such high praise.
Also i LOVE Slayer, but i can see why people wouldn't like them. (their pro white supremecy comment on the Minor Threat cover, Kerry King saying he wanted to move his music in a similar direction to slipknot, Kerry King appearing in a Sum 41 video...etc)

Good metal is:
Sepultura and offshoot Soulfly

Bull! Cannibal Corpse was way better with Barnes! At least on vocals; their music has improved over the years - especially on Gore Obsessed.
Bands/Groups/People I hate:
Most Nu-Metal (like Soulfly and Downthesun)
Poser Punk
Marilyn Manson
Linkin Park
Most Rap "Artists" (don't like any, but don't hate them all)
Hatebreed
E-Town Concrete
Bands/Groups/People I like, but many hate:
Soulfly - I see them get poked at a lot, but I like them. They actually make an effort to be a little different by adding tribal music in their sound.
Downthesun - Okay, most people judge them by the fact that they are nu-metal. Don't. Get their debut. They did Nu-Metal the way it was supposed to be done.
Cradle of Filth - Don't judge them by black metal standards. View them as a fusion of goth metal and black metal. Tr00 black metal is very different from this kind of black metal or norsecore (black metal with grindcore influences; Dark Funeral, Marduk, etc.).
And incase you think that all I listen to is this kind of shit, well, you're wrong. I usually listen to bands like Bowel Stew, Haemorhhage, Lymphatic Phlegm, Dead Infection, Bloody Anal Yeast Infection, Circle of Dead Children, Scar Culture, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Napalm Death, etc. In short, grindcore and death metal.

If i wanted deeper vocals i'd listen to Dying Fetus or Mortician. I prefer Fisher because he's got a better range of sounds. Where Barnes will grunt and mutter, Fisher will screech, howl, and bark. Don't get me wrong, i still like Barnes, but i wouldn't recommend him to someone who is trying to get into CC.
