guitar hero 2 comes out nov 11 on ps2. its coming out for xbox 360 as well with a cooler guitar.

Working here makes me want to get a 360.

we get a demo wii nov 1st, im going in early to help set it up, even if i dont work that day.

i have to deal with a lot of rude kids and sometimes even worse, there parents.

but when its slow i get to play video games, and bascially anything that isnt in plastic i can play. I also have first dibs on any games that are traded in.

everyone wants me to use my 20% off for them, and i cave like the bitch i am.

its fun.

i work in a game store too, great fun all round

couple of nice perks so far:

-free copy of zelda collectors edition (which we cant sell, but was traded in)
-the odd free promotional tshirt or other merchandice
-25% off new games, and 30% off preowned games :):)
-free copy of Rayman for the Wii one it comes out (we currently have the most Wii preorders in scotland, something like 93 so far, and should it continue the manager gets a free Wii and every launch game, which he is going to split with the staff, and i lost 'dibs' on zelda or red steel)

the pay isnt fantastic (above min wage), but its better than McDonalds

If the pay didn't suck, I'd get a job at one too. At least there isn't much stress involved. I've somehow been sucked into the Office Space way of life... ugh.

yeah, ive been wrenching cars for the last year or so, its a real change of pace. surprizingly enough there is a lot of paperwork i have to do. Im not used to it at all. Im sure ill catch on, and i cant deny the benefits are better here than both the shops i worked at. Its looking like i might have to get another job. Maybe ill work at a coffee shop or something.

I can't blame him because its the only decent games store in town so they have tons of customers, and people in Grande Prairie are ignorant assholes who never know what there talking about, coupled with the knowlegde hat his managers are a pair of morbidly obese women.

Oh boy, i cracked on my first brat today. Luckly it wasnt in front of my boss. I thought i was gonna be able to hold out a little longer. I was with a customer and this kid ran in. I was trying to search for a game in our computer and he kept yelling, "DO YOU HAVE JIMMY NEURTRON FOR NINTEDO PS?????" and i say, "Well do you mean the nintendo DS, or the PSP?" to which he responds, "DO YOU HAVE JIMMY NEUTRON FOR NINTENDO PS???"

i just kinda giggled and continued on my way with the computer. But he didnt stop. He kept asking and asking. He was yelling over the customer. Finally after about the 6th time he asked i yelled, "ILL CHECK IN A SECOND, GET IN LINE." real angry like. I made the customer jump. I looked at him with shock to what i did.

luckly he smiled with an understanding smile. I finished the transaction and the kid ran off before i could answer him.

i felt like a jerk but i think i was totally justified, i mean he was being rude so i tried to ignore but he didnt stop, so i had to be rude back?

right?

I work in a video store and get that kinda shit all the time too. Yesterday this little fucker kept yelling at his obviously exhausted mom about getting the wrong for him while in a line of about 8 people while he kept trying to shove another game on the counter. I just grabbed the game from him and put it in the pile of shit that's going back on the shelves. It didn't make him happy but I was! :D

Comrade Rocket

yeah i have to admit that working in this store made me realize how not spoiled i was as a child. My mom made me buy all my own games. but some of these kids treat there parents like crap. One mom came in on the cell phone and the kid was telling her to get a ton of games, some were rare and fairly expensive. Then once he was done with his list she bought all the games. something like 160 bucks in games. I have never spent that much on anything other than a system.

i felt bad for the mom. she kept sighing and rolling her eyes.

why dont people hit there kids anymore?

I got in a hour-long argument with a dude at an EB on Tuesday because I wanted to return two new, unopened Nintendo DS accessories that were purchased 15 days ago. After giving me loads of shit and waffling between whether he could give me store credit or not, and me calmly repeating his own return policy written in his personal employee rulebook, the signs in the store, and the policy on the receipt (full refund within 30 days' purchase of unopened accessories), he eventually called his manager and handed the phone to me. His manager then just listened to me repeat it again and asked to talk to the guy, who then hung up and said his manager said I'd have to call customer care or whatever. Somehow, I got him to relent and give me cash back on that and store credit on Guilty Gear Dust Strikers for DS (because it is terrible) to get Bully and some change, but he wouldn't accept my Nintendo Gamecube power adapter (unopened) because it was more than 30 days old, but hey I wasn't expected to get away with that one ;<

So then I got to conversatin' and the following is a TRUE TO LIFE account!
Do you know what stores are selling Wiis on first-come-first-serve?
'We're sold out, sorry.'
Yes, okay, but do you know what stores are?
'EBGames?'
No, any store.
'Uh, no.'
Okay.
'But, it's gon be tough to get one.'
Why's that?
'They ain't got many shipped.'
They have about 4 million coming before Christmas.
'Ha ha! Noooo they ain't! Only about 400 thousand PS3s and Wiis are shipping this year!'
Uh, I thought that was part of the whole deal; that there were a lot more Wiis being made and shipped
'Mmm MMM!'
Uh huh, so, thanks, and-
'Yeah, Europe and Germany and all that's not even GETTIN em, and they're like, right NEXT to Japan.'

He said that last part as if sharing a strange-but-true pearl of insider wisdom across which he'd stumbled in his many experienced years of domestic clerkery and studying Dragonball Z on adult swim.

The greatest guilt today is that of people who accept collectivism by moral default; the people who seek protection from the necessity of taking a stand, by refusing to admit to themselves the nature of that which they are accepting; the people who support plans specifically designed to achieve serfdom, but hide behind the empty assertion that they are lovers of freedom, with no concrete meaning attached to the word; the people who believe that the content of ideas need not be examined, that principles need not be defined, and that facts can be eliminated by keeping one's eyes shut. They expect, when they find themselves in a world of bloody ruins and concentration camps, to escape moral responsibility by wailing: "I'm a faggot that has nothing better to do"

our display xbox was busted so we put in a ps2 with FF7 Dirge of Cerberius.

I can now tell peoples judgement from how they react to that game.

if they like it, they have horrible taste.

STORY TIME...

today it was pretty slow. Ultimate alliance was in the 360 so i decided to play. I got past the first mission and was pretty far into the second one. I had unlocked Cap Americas classic costume and deadpools ultimate costume, and i had been working on a iron man and wolverine. Overall i had prolly been playing for like 2 hours.

So then this guy comes in. He looked a bit strange. His clothes were covered in paint but his arms and face were clean and he had a really bad smell about him. He comes in and asks what im playing. Eager to try out the multiplayer i gave him a controller and had him dial in. He was wolverine and i was deadpool. I had gotten stuck when he came in, and i figured two minds would be able to find it out easier than 1.

thats when he did it. after like maybe 3 minutes of running around he hits the start button to bring up the menu. I was a bit annoyed, but i figured that he wanted to check out his character. NO, he goes all the way down to quit game and exits out to the main menu.

I was shocked. At first i said, "oh, you quit our game." thinking he would hop back in. He then went so far as to start and new game and OVERWRITE THE GAME I WAS PLAYING.

FUCK SHIT FUCK GOD DAMNIT

so i put down my controller and started working on some store stuff i had to take care of. He looked around a bit and bascially acted real shady. He had to know what he did. Then when i walked over he ran off. He was trying to turn off the system from the controller for whatever reason.

i was freaking angry. we are not suppost to save games, but we can get away with it on the xbox's because of the hard drive. I really dont want to go through the couple hours again. I think this a-hole just ruined the game for me.

Okay, just bear with this story and it will get video game related eventually...

I needed to get a haircut so I went to the mall. I found the local haircut place, and figuring it might be overpriced I walked up to the counter and asked the lady there, "How much for a haircut?"

So she responds, "Sorry, we are all booked."

I turn around to leave and then she says, "Oh wait, we can get you in about 20 minutes."

So I ask again, "How much is it?"

Ignoring me she says, "So do you want to get the haircut in 20 minutes?"

Me, "Um.... maybe... I still need to know how much it costs?"

Then she just stood there not saying anything for about half a minute before she said, "$22."

So I decided to keep my hair and buy guitar hero instead. ROCK ON.

bad news gang

so i forgot to write down some stuff in the 45 minutes of paperwork i have to do everynight and i didnt rearrange all the nintendo games even tho the coworker who told me to do it could have done it himself, or at least helped me so i got written up. But my boss was cool about it and said i had a verbal warning. So i was a little mad but then i came in yesterday and my boss set me aside and said that the store looked awful the other day. Saying i didnt sweep, i didnt wipe down the counters and i didnt fill holes in the new product... even tho i remember doing it specifically. This combined with some other stuff made our boss come up with a new HORRIBLE rule...

no more video games, on the clock.

WTF, thats like telling someone they can look at the car but they cant drive it. So all they have to tell them is how cool it looks. He said that i can play games on my 10 minute breaks (which i never get anyways) or my 30 minute lunch (where my brain is concentrated on food anyways). He then went on to say my friend couldnt visit me while i was working, Which is also riduculious because they are my friends, but they are also my customers, and by not letting them coming in while i work he is taking money outta our hands. (RUN ON)

Buhhda brought me a taco the other day and my boss took her outside and yelled at her about it. I think he said that shes not allowed to come over while im on the clock or something like that. SHE WORKS IN THE SAME FUCKING BUILDING.

Im going to give him sometime. He is going through a divorce. He just got his own place. So he isnt going to be spending so much time at work. Also the higherups are putting a lot of pressure on him so as a result he is putting pressure on me. Ill let it go for a little while because honestly i like this job, and i really want to stay here. But if this shit continues i can find another job easily.

TL;DR- Boss makes shitty rules.

My Gameboy SP is in fairly good condition, I got it in the summer of '05 and I probably got about 100 hours of gameplay on it, if that. I don't know of any independent game stores. Everyone around here is all BIG BUSINESS. >:

Amazon.com Marketplace is selling for as low as 52 bucks, but no one would ever buy from me there is the problem. >:

Fuck man I just want a DS :(

Comrade Rocket
Nov 1st, 2006, 12:37 AM
considering we were selling the SPs for like 30 bucks, i think that 15 bucks is a rip off on both ends.

i just found out that used DS bricks dropped down to 70 bucks and used DS lites (we got a used one in, i really want it) were 109.

i hate not having any money for games.

also, the unfinished paperwork and other stuff had nothing to do with me playing games. 30 mins before we close i have to clean up the shop. If im playing a game i stop right where i am and start cleaning.

It was awful today, i had like 5 customers between 6 and 9 and not being able to play games made it DRAG. But we got in a book about getting a job in the video game industry with illustrations by the penny-arcade guy. It was really informative but there is really no point in buying it because it has something like 50 jobs but really you only quallify for one or two.

Game retail is in it, and it got it dead on. Also Quality Assurance (ie game testers) is a really sucky job that pays barely the same wage as me or a guy who works at nationwide burgers.

im thinking about trying to be a designer tho. Then you can all play my games.

Dr. Boogie
Nov 1st, 2006, 01:03 AM
Don't you have to work your way up to designer after years of QA and such?

Comrade Rocket
Nov 1st, 2006, 02:30 AM
possibly, the book said that normally they hire you on as a designer, they never said how you can go about getting that job. One could be going through QA another one was trying to work at a game shop where local designers come through.

They also said, that while its rare, you can be hired as a designer with a high school education. But you better have some Good freaking ideas if you plan to stay on with the company. They say that a Degree in english and film studies will better your chances.

It sounds like a great job, im thinking about pursuing it.

Due to a unanimous vote by Oklahoma legislature, mature rated games must have their 2/3rds of their cover covered by black tape, must not be sold to minors, must not be sold to adults for minors, and must not be found in the possession of minors, or else legal action will be taken. I was informed of this by an Azn dude at my Game King. Basically, Mature games, (rated for 17+ year olds), are being labeled as porn. Fuck. Once again, the rights of the majority are taken away by those sick kids with too much imagination. I hate those bastards. I'm going to run for governer one day. I swear it.

On a side note, a wierd old man walked in shortly after I did last night. He said he was friends with a millionaire who donates his Escalades to charity and has a $195,000 computer monitor about the size of a wall in his basement that he plays his games on. "Computer Monitor" was especially important, as it was said many times. The Azn guy, (and I) was frustrated because he tried, futilely, to tell the wierd dude that no matter how good the screen is, it's not going to make the system pump out better graphics.

Then a crackhead walked in, shaking his head back and forth in his hoodie and talking to himself. I decided to high-tail it outta there, but not before buying another copy of the Getaway and MDK2: Armageddon for $10. I'm still looking for a copy of Twisted Metal: Black because I refuse to go on eBay or Amazon to get a $5 game.

So yeah, you get a lot of strange characters out in Lawton at night and you learn something new every day. I'd love to work there, though. Maybe in a few years, if I'm still here, I'll see about getting work there. I guess I'll keep aiming for Carmike Cinemas for now.

I almost got Twisted Metal: Black today. This kid came in and was gonna sell it, but he was only gonna get a buck so he decided to keep it.

more chronicals of the game store.

So i was playing Need for Speed Carbon (yeah, that "no game" rule lasted for about 16 hours before my boss broke down) when this kid who had to be like 8 came in. He walked up to me and offered his SP to me saying only, "fix it" I turned it on and across the screen was a huge crack with that weird black splotch that comes when you break LCDs. I told him that there was no way i could fix it and that he was gonna have to buy a new one. He took it and without a word left.

The next day he returned with his mom in tow. She began yelling saying that i was trying to rip off her son and that i didnt treat him with respect the other day. Aparently she bought a service contract with the system. I explained that the son said 2 words the entire time he was in the store and she started to lighten up. I told her that i needed the original recipt and all that jazz that comes with a return. It wasnt till after they left that i realized that kind of damage isnt covered in our warranty.

I was expecting her to have a fit when she came back. But before i could tell her what happened she told me that the kid had actually stepped on the SP and lied to his mom about it. She apologized about how she yelled at me and made her son apologize as well. So it ended pretty well.

also a kid traded in like 100 bucks in games towards a 360 and his dad called me up and yelled at me about it. He was really mad. and now we have to return all the games for cash. and now we have to get parent concent on all trade ins. OH BOY

for a time, it was good.

sony dropped the bomb. 120,000 ps3 in america for 2006. which means we are getting 2. i easily get 30 times in a day where i have to tell people, no, they cant have one and good luck finding one. So some people are actually angry at us for not having them. Those people are forgetible, whatever, they can be mad that they cant blow 1000 bucks for there bratty kids. The real people who should be mad are the ones who pre-ordered it. Aparently the old manager decided that he didnt like to write things down and as a result we have about 30 ps3 reserves written down but in actuallty we have amost 100 in the system. People have been pre-ordering since before the ps3 was orignally announced and because of the shoddy paper work someone who preordered 4 months ago is gtting the first one. Many times people have come in asking about there preorder. I cant find them on the list, but they have down 50 bucks saying they are gonna get one. No fun

The wii is being handled the same way. first i was told we are gonna get 20 because nintedo loved us. Then we actually got our release and we were getting 9. now im finding out we are getting 4... i think. It doesnt matter anyways because according to a new company rule, i cant buy a wii or a ps3 on release from our store. Frustrating. the game store was wii plan 1, wii plan 2 was ruined as well by my current manager.

Wii plan 1 was the idea that on launch we were getting 9 wiis. 4 were going out for preorder and the 5 remaning were first come first serve. i was then informed if i wanted to get the wii tho i had to drop like an extra 200 bucks on accesories and games. If we sell the wiis for more, more will come our way on the next shipment. I have 300 bucks set aside for the wii. thats one game and the system. I dont want to spend 500 bucks, i would just buy a 360.

wii plan 2 was a bit more devious. Customers would come in asking about getting one and i would inform them that we are not gonna have enough. So i would tell them to check wal-mart, best buy, costco. I would tell them every store but k-mart. k-mart is gonna have them and if i didnt tell anyone i figured i was eleminating competers. No luck, my manager has been telling people to got o k-mart ONLY. so him, combined with me telling everyone else to go to the other stores pretty much screws me.

I want a Wii so bad. im gonna freeze my ass to a time where the wii isnt in such high demand and all the games are like 10 bucks.

My friend tells me that in Alberta alone theres gonna be something like 100 Wii's and at most 30-50PS3's

This rotation is playing out to be one huge stomach punch for Sony. They pretty much have to release this year or no one will bite. With two cheaper and frankly more fun and more friendly looking consoles on the market, the PS3 will die quickly this rotation, Just as the 3DO did before it.

MetalMilitia

Everyone is always bitching at sony saying they're going to fail etc.
But I'll bet that in 1 years time the PS3 will be selling in huge numbers and Sony will be laughing their stinking rich arses off at all the nay-sayers.

Dr. Boogie
Nov 16th, 2006, 06:52 PM
The reason people are speculating about a big failure for Sony is because it seems like everything that could go wrong for them is. The Blu-Ray fiasco, the systems breaking down quickly, the reduced shipments of the PS3s, and the overall cost of the system.

I'm not saying they couldn't turn things around for Sony, but it seems like they might have some trouble what with all that's happened.

But I'll bet that in 1 years time the PS3 will be selling in huge numbers and Sony will be laughing their stinking rich arses off at all the nay-sayers.
Sony is having financial troubles. As in, if the PS3 doesn't sell, their gaming department goes under. Couple that with the fact that the system costs twice as much as they are selling it for per unit, and you don't have a very good future in store.

Also, Blue Ray may be nice, but nobody needs it yet, and most people can't use it yet, anyway. It will be at least 5 years before Blue Ray becomes the standard , because you need more than just the player to experience it. You also need a friggin' expensive TV for it to make any real difference. 5 years is the basic life span of a gaming console. By the time Blue Ray is standard, people will be leaving PS3 for newer, greener pastures, and Sony will not have a backup plan, because they are banking on this machine to double the current console life (a rediculous idea to begin with).

So, you can have your PS3. While you're waiting for games and movies to come down from their initial 70-80 dollar price tag, the rest of us will be playing our games on the TV's we already have, and having a damn good time doing it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not buying a PS3 OR a 360 OR a Wii. I've got £1700 worth of PC sitting under my desk for all the gaming I could ever want.

The thing is, there is so much speculation on the net that it's easy to start believing it - but at the end of the day Sony arn't stupid. It's hard to maintain that point of view in light of recent shinanigans but I fully believe there are too many extremely clever people over at sony for this product to be a failure.

Think about all the average non-technical people out there. As far as they're concerned blue ray IS the next big thing and the PS3 IS the most powerful gaming system on the planet. They're going to lap it up.

And let's not forget that although Sony may be loosing money on the consoles, they are likely to be making a large amount of money on games, peripherals and I would think licencing.

This is also what happened to Sega and the Dreamcast.

I'm basing my reasons for sony's failure this rotation based on the fact that not many people are willing to shell out $600 for a game machine. Sony hasn't publicly announce its a "HOME ENTERTAINMENT CENTER" to the masses, they just run commercials with Playstation 3 smeared everywhere in that Spiderman font. The average person's gonna think "$600 to play games!?" fuck that I'll buy the one thats 400 or 250.

If I recall isn't this the exact opposite conversation everyone had with the N64?

The manager at an ebgames i know likes MLE and told her that they're getting a huge Wii surplus and that as long as we show up by noon on launch day that we can get one.

I'm thinking we'll each buy 2 if possible and scalp 3 on the internets. :3

i got yelled at yesterday by a woman asking why she couldnt preorder a wii. i told her that we stop taking preorders a week before launch and that we will prolly have some extras 2 weeks after launch. she got mad and asked why she couldnt preorder one after launch.... seriously. then she tried to pull some crap about how she has a kid and he is gonna be really sad if he doesnt get a wii.

I was mad at her so i made up a huge bullshit story about how i was in the same boat because me and my kid wanted a wii but i cant get her one because my store isnt letting us buy one. so she hung up and me and another co worker played some excite truck.

At least she was just on the phone... :/

I just don't get some people. A store is not going to have exactly who you want all the time, especially if what you want is one the hottest christmas items of the year. Get used to it. You should have told her that now would be good time for her little brat learn the value of some fucking patience.

Sadly our culture has devolved into a state of perpetual demanded instant gratification. George Carlin summed up our culture very succintly:

"Give me it. IT"S MINE!!!!!!!!"

oh boy. manager is a dick.

after all this crap about not being able to buy a wii at our store, he decides saturday night to have a midnight sale. and he sold one to himself, my other co-worker and another kid who used to work there. I didnt even get a call, hell, he's not even gonna tell me. i found out through another customer that got screwed. He was going off on some other people at the shop about how we cant buy them here and how the first shipment of systems have to go to pre-orders.

hes a fucking lying blowhard. this combined with some other stuff he has been doing has got me boiled.

Yeah the common consensus of games tores is that there not as fun to work at as you'd think >:

I remember my interview with the manager at EB, I botched the interview because the stupid bitch didn't have a sense of humor.
she asked me why I would want to work at EB Games, I respond with "well I like playing games and their development, so it seemed natural to want to have a job centered around selling them. " She then went on to question me about what kind of employee I'd make I responded by saying something along the lines (I forget my exact wording because at this point I'm fixated on the immense hairs growing from her nose) so I say "I'll be there as much as humanly possible unless I do something stupid and get fired-" I'm interrupted at this point by "Well, what would you do to get fired. I said I don't know I suppose break something or not show up for more than one consecutive day" then in the bitchiest assuming tone I've ever heard. "Like Stealing!" "you can get out right now if you think you can take get away with that right now, we need serious employees not dip shit thieves!" I told her I had no intention of stealing or anything like that. I receive this snappy little comment "then why did you say you were going to?" At this point I was instantly fed up with her bullshit so I told her its a miracle anyone wants to work here, what with her "humorless desert of a cunt." then I calmly walked away, slamming the office door as hard as I could (rewarded by the familiar sound of DVD cases hitting the floor.

Damn I'm an abrasive person :(
