I wasn't sure what to expect from this game. After playing the demo it left me very skeptical but I have to say, FF is back. The demo doesn't do this game justice. All the FF haters out there will still probably hate it because it's cool to hate FF or something but so far this is turning out to be an awesome rpg.

What's up with the gambit system, how does it play out? I never got to play the demo, and I'm not certain if I want to get this game.

I always loved Final Fantasy, I just couldn't play them more than once due to the crap replay. I haven't played any of the one's past 10, but I'll try this.

The fact that this game takes place in Ivalice is an insult to my very core. :(

everyone has this game and work and they talk about it around me while i shove fingers in my ears and go LALALLALALALALALLALALA. the last final fantasy i really played was 8 while skimming through all the others, including crystal chronicals. I want to play this one but its 50 bones and even with a discount its too much. I might just have to steal some games from friends and turn them in. I dunno.

also, i hear the story is really similar to star wars.

I know right? The name of the world is very important in the quality of the game. Yeah yeah, FFT is great and blah blah blah, we all know.

Would you say it is worth to throw down $50 for it or should I wait till it goes to the bargain bin?

It's the start of the gaming apocolypse.

But I knew FF would destroy gameplay in general.

To you fags, it works like this: Storyline > Fun.

When in reality, it is Fun > Storyline.

So why the fuck do you idiots eat this shit up?

Because for some people, storyline = fun. These are typically the same people who read these things called "books."

For example, to me, games like Guild Wars and WoW that have no story to speak of are not fun. But games like FFs 1-7 are fun because they have a story.

So shut up.

The gambit system is used to assign tactics to your other party members without having to assign individual tasks to them. It's pretty decent actually and you get different types of gambits that allow them to do different things on their own.

Of course "fun" is greater than anything but something has to make a game fun you dumbass. In the case of FFXII the story isn't really shit yet where I'm at but the game is still fun. Go figure. Wow. Amazing.

Ignore Zen444. He's trying to 'stand out', as usual.

Well, I played through the first disk of FFIX, so I naturally ignored the next two. However, the tactics system has me intrigued, because it worked so well in games like Dragon Warrior 4. I'd really like to see how Final Fantasy goes about it.

i picked this up a few days ago.

the combat is wonderful, not turn based anymore. im not for sure they should have called it final fantasy, and it might as well be a completely new game franchise.

what is your team like tim? i have vaan as a warrior type with sword and shield. baltheir or however the fuck you spell his name i give 2 handed weapons to and he manages to kill everything in his path. ashe is my white/black/green/time/arcane mage.

I'm slightly cautious over FF XII, since personaly I think that all the FFs that have been published after VII have been major disappointments. (Except IX, which was ok). And, I doupt that I'll ever buy PS2 or PS3, so I pretty much have to wait for my friend to buy one :(

Grislygus

Because it's a Japanese game franchise. They do that.

Books? Good one, especially when the typical RPG story is complete shit, and couldn't be passed off as a book.

Storyline is fine, but when you focus on it more then gameplay, that's a bad thing.

The only games that are even allowed to get away with bad gameplay, but good storyline, are Adventure games.

I think I forgot to mention Western RPG's like Fable are all right. Since they focus on the gameplay first.

Did I say it could pass off as a book, cunt?

Storyline is fine, but when you focus on it more then gameplay, that's a bad thing.

I can put up with less-than-spectacular gameplay if the story's good. If you can't, well, that's your problem, isn't it?

The only games that are even allowed to get away with bad gameplay, but good storyline, are Adventure games.

Says who? And like what?

Dude! Haven't you ever played Pitfall? That's some deep shit right there man.

Anyways, is this game accesible for people who don't really play turn-based RPG's then. From what I've read about the Gambit system it seems more action oriented rather than turn based. Then again, that's based solely on forum chat from fanboys and a review I've read.

Yes, I know. You act like a pissy manchild whenever the subject comes up.

Anyhoo, I'm curious as to how the experience and leveling system works. Any changes there?

timrpgland

Gameplay, dumbass.

You do realize we are talking about a RPG here? If anyone still loves the gameplay of an RPG after 50+ hours of the same thing something is seriously wrong with them. Play something else.

The combat is like FFXI if you've ever played that. More action oriented but still time/turn based.

The leveling system is kind of like the grid system. So you level up normally and gain stats but you also get License Points along with experience. The License Points are used to get skills, stat mods, ability to use weapons, armor and items, etc. It works well enough.

Is the combat similar to any non-FF games? I haven't played any since 7.

i was under the impression it was supposed to be similar to vagrant story, but then I'm not sure.

Mine is pretty similar but I'm keeping Balthier with ranged weapons (guns right now). Vaan uses a sword and shield as well but is also a good white mage. Ashe is pretty similar to Vaan right now except she has a little green magic mixed in. I spent a lot of points on the grid getting augments and bonuses however.

FFXI was just mentioned cause it really feels like fighting in a MMORPG and that's the closest thing to it. No seperate battles, free roaming, time/turn based attacks and etc.

Edit: Just realized I guess you could also compare it (on some levels) to KOTOR's combat.

How far is everyone (without ruining it)?

I have about 19 hours in and am levels 24 through 19.

Need to put in some hefty hours in this week.

Cool. I am still not that far. Level 29 now. I will be obsessing about marks soon enough but I've left most up to this point.

I like that this is one of those games where the more you play, the more you like it.
