My great-great-great-grandfather (seriously) fought in the Civil War. his name was John Holliday. He lived until the 1910's, when around the age of 80 he fell off his horse and broke his leg. He died of gangrene in an odd bit of irony.

also my Grandfather kicked Nazi ass through WW2 because he wasn't at Dieppe! He (along with 2 other guys) are credited with turning a 40mm AA gun on a group of advancing krauts and killing at least 8 of them. Its not the most impressive war story but just the fact that 8 men got hit with ammo that was used to tear the wings of planes into confetti!

My grandfather was scouting behind enemylines and was able to take five soviets as a prisoner. As a reward he received 5 days long vacation.

That's the only thing he told me about war. Too bad he died when I was a little kid so I never got any great chance to talk about war with him :( Although, I'm not sure if he even would've wanted to discuss about it :/

No, not really. His grandson, my great-uncle, just died a few years ago. He had the Springfield muzzle loader used in the Civil War sitting in his living room, and for as long as he was of health to hunt he used it to shoot squirrels. My uncle was pretty amazing, he was always on the PBS show out of Indy called "Across Indiana" simply for being awesome. All this, and for the last thirty or so years of his life he had NO INTESTINES. I'm not making that up!

my dad's a huge history buff. the local papers always quote him as a source: "local historian." i know that many of my ancestors were in the revolutionary and civil wars, but i don't know exactly whom or any details about them. :(

Gangrene is necrosis and subsequent decay of body tissues caused by infection or thrombosis or lack of blood flow. It is usually the result of critically insufficient blood supply sometimes caused by injury and subsequent contamination with bacteria. This condition is most common in the extremities. The best of all possible treatments is revascularization (restoration of blood flow) of the affected organ, which can reverse some of the effects of necrosis and allow healing. Depending on the extent of tissue loss and location, treatment other than revascularization runs the gamut from allowing digits to auto-amputate (fall off), debridement and local care, to amputation, the removal of infected necrotic tissues.
