Best book I've read in years. Such great storytelling, with a certain Borgesian quality and richness of ideas. If you don't know, he's a Turkish author who won the Nobel prize in literature in 2006.

I really enjoyed it. A lot of works in translation read like somebody's slow cousin, but this one stayed crisp.

I actually got to reading this because Pamuk just joined the faculty of my MFA program. So far he taught a seminar/lecture that focused (unfortunately) on Thomas Mann's "Tonio Kroger." He's a terrifyingly smart guy.

You must be at Columbia? I went there from 1998-02.

Undergrad. Though I just applied to its Masters program in philosophy, so I may go back there next fall.
