View Full Version : AN HUMBLE APPRECIATION THREAD

It has occured to me that anyone reading my posts in this forum might come to the conclusion I am arrogant.
This is almost certainly because I am.
But first and foremost I concider myself a comedy writer. You may or may not find me funny, humor being subjective, but while I have strong opinions I generally communicate through comedy.
My point?
The Apportioner recently posted a thread asking if anyone had ever had their opinion changed as a result of this board. I didn't respond for two reasons. I'm stubborn by nature (almost as stubborn as, say, Naldo) and I didn't want to admit that my mind has not been significantly changed by anything here. That seemed, well, arrogant.
However. I have learned a great deal. In reading my posts, that may not be evident, and because of my writing style I may come across as thinking I am the best informed, most intelligent member here.
Let this thread serve as a diclaimer (and I made it this long already so you wouldn't get this far.) There are several people on this board who are better informed, smarter than I or both and consequently their opinions should carry more weight. This is hrdly to say I always agree with them or that you should, only that they should be taken at very least as seriously as you take me. This field widens when you include people better versed than I in speciffic fields, and people less given to hyperbole.
The Aportioner is smarter and better informed, and tends to employ reason to a degree I often sacrafice in favor of rhetorical goals or laughs.
Kev and Rorshach are both better informed than I am, and Rorshach is FAR better read than I.
Punkgirlies knowledge of law and precedent leave mine in the dust, Abbcdxs historical/political knowledge of Zionism and the Middle east supasses mine by miles and GA, Kelly and any other former or current servicemen have far more right to weigh in on the military then I ever will.
I also think Eye-tie deserves a great deal of credit for shouldering what is here a minority point of view and generally doing so with grace and good humor.
Proto, Sspad, Chojin and Chimp provide an unparraled level of gayness without which our board would be far less gay.
Very special thanks to Naldo and Vince, because honestly this forum wouldn't be that funny without you. Seriously. Without Ed Mcmann, no Johnny.
Anyone I've snubbed by not mentioning please know that it's because my typing fingers are tired and I couldn't remember you.

You know I've tried to write something here without sounding like I wanted to suck you off, but it's not all that easy. I'll just shoot from the hip.
Personally, I would say cut yourself some slack. Whatever arrogance you have, I think, is well deserved. You've shown yourself to be a pillar in the forum in as much as your replies are always concise, informed, interesting, and delivered in a manner which keeps the tone of the conversation light without detracting at all from the depth of the discussion itself. You're open to hearing other people's side of an argument, but more than willing to slap down bullshit when and where you hear it. All of which, are admirable characteristics lacking in most of the posters who have had transitory histories on this board.
If you haven't been overly influenced by the posts on this board, well, the burden of proof lies with the prosecution. It's a failing of those whom have gone head to head with your ideals and been found too weak to meet the challenge.
While I'm down on my knees over here, I'd like to put in a good word for Italian who I only gave an honourable mention to previously. Spoke to him off the board for the first time the other day, and I found myself a little shaken. I have a feeling he's a hell of alot smarter than I am, and in all probability, even better informed. You better start showing that from now, you wop bastard, or else I'm going to look like an asshole. ;)

Oh, and FartinMowler- Get the fuck out of here. Now. You are not, and never were, funny. Get out now, and never again darken these boards with your foul, putrid presence.

When you guys are done patting yourselfs on the back can you walk the dog and take out the garbage?
I'm fine with my non-existant status thank you.

Apparently that's not the case, because if you were content with being "non-existent," you wouldn't be fucking posting.

"Status"
I guess that's why you are considered a fag and not one of the intelligent.

Actually, Sppad is my friend. The gay gayness comment was because I couldn't leave out those guys. I include myself happily among those who keep this board gayest gayfest to ever queer up a fag strokefest.
Fartin. I keep trying to like you because you're tenacious. And because since a fellow called A Chimp in Walmart left I don't have anyone to like that everybody else hates. Try not to screw it up.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Does quoting the word "status" somehow shoot down Spadowsky's valid point?

Didn't see the thread by CLAsp, but I have to say I've changed my mind about a few things because of the philosophy board, I just cannot remember which those things were.

. You're open to hearing other people's side of an argument,
LOL Ror, sometimes it's the stupidity of THEIR argument that makes Max's ... the old "give them enough rope" thing ... Naldo should know 'cause he's had his neck in the noose so often he has rope burn scars :)
.
but more than willing to slap down bullshit when and where you hear it. All of which, are admirable characteristics lacking in most of the posters who have had transitory histories on this board.
Sometimes, you don't need an in depth knowledge of a specific topic so much as a general sense of logic in rooting the BS out ... and a bit of rhetorical skill ... and a dash of humor ... the moment in humor when you can really silence someone is pretty sweet ... my apologies to Mr. Lenny Bruce. :)
LOL.

I'm very selective. I don't think I've ever pciked on someone here who didn't say something REALLY awful first.

Yeah so I'm a little late here and all but god damn having a job. Sometimes work really puts a cramp on my internet style.
Anyway, this is genuinely the only message board I really post on, or read for that matter. In fact, this is really the only forum I post in, although I like looking at the Post Your Picture thread because it makes me LOL a lot. But anyway, for me, this forum fills a void that I don't get in day to day life. Like you guys, I suppose I sort of have a bit of a passion for a lot of the subjects discussed here. I don't have the kind of friends that sit around and have these sorts of conversations so this sort of gives me the opportunity to do that.
As for no thread ever changing a person's position, in my case that may be true, but I don't think I need my opinion changed for this to have an impact on me. The simple act of dialogue on a subject as a minimum forces me to challenge my positions and that's healthy to me. I would consider myself a relative moderate so I usually end up not really completely agreeing with either side of the polarized debates often had here.
But a lot of the discussions had here cause me to really rethink and defend my own personal opinions. While I don't often agree with some of the things said here, I appreciate the level of thought that has gone into your opinions. Nothing disappoints me more than hearing shallow rhetoric from both sides of the argument at hand. Agree or disagree, I appreciate the fact that most here are pretty well informed on the subjects discussed and it makes me feel a little better about the state of the world knowing that there are at least people thinking about these things.
Having said that, I think we should all make out now and have a huge love fest.

As far as opinions on actual issues go, I've not really changed my mind about anything. However, I my reasonings behind those issues certainly has been made more sound and concise, and I have a better idea for why I feel the way I do. Three years ago I would have considered the Republican party the lesser of two evils, but the philosophy board here is one of a handful of factors that have made me more liberal on a larger scale.
