From acclaimed directors Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Rob Zombie, Eli Roth, and Edgar Wright comes the manliest and most badass movie I have ever seen. You can even see Tom Savini for a split second and in the longer trailer and you can also see psycho Stuntman Mike smash through a cinema's "Now Playing" board with Scary Movie 4 and Wolf Creek on it.

In true grindhouse fashion, the two movies, (Planet Terror and Death Proof), are shown back to back with ads for fake movies in between them.

Planet Terror is a classic zombie movie about a bunch of thieves accidentally releasing zombie gas from a military base and Death Proof is about a car that cannot be destroyed and neither can anyone in the driver's seat.

One of the fake ads is for a movie called They Call Him Machete;

Yeah, it's awesome. Dear Jesus, I hope this doesn't suck.

Yeah, looks like it'll be a really, really entertaining movie. Robert Rodriguez is never boring and is one of my favorite directors. Tarantino too, but I didn't wanna mention him cause I know juttin, arrowx, jefftheninja, or zelda will come in here and be fanboys now.

They (Rodriguez and Tarantino) juggled around the idea that when the movie is done and is rather successful, they might make full length movies for the trailers.

I think it's slated to be 2 1/2 hours long, entireley, and I'd say 70 or less minutes per movie because of the fake trailers and such.

I was a little (and read all of this before you jump down my throat!!!) dissapointed with Terantino's movie Hostel.

when my mom (yes, this is like the first movie i ever had to get permission to watch) finally let me see it, I was like, "What is this? This isn't even really that scary..."

there were a few really good gore scenes, especially with the Jap girl and the blowtorch, but i found myself bored at about the 8th sex scene. I guess it's cause i'm a 15 year old girl... but still.

anyway, even with the effects i still didn't find it as good as From Dusk till Dawn.

but this one looks really good! Rock on Tarantino! churn out another winner!

Jeff The Ninja
Mar 7th, 2007, 08:14 PM
Actually, Eli Roth made Hostel. They just stuck Tarrantino's name on it to sell tickets.

And I (And practically everyone else here) can agree that Hostel was garbage.

No, Hostel sucked ass.

Anyway, the word on the street (and by street I mean "internet". and by internet I mean "massive conglomeration of gaywads".) is that the "Machete" trailer is actually going to be a REAL movie that might go straight to DVD:

Director Robert Rodriguez spoke at ShoWest, touching on a few topics, including sequels and spin-offs.

Rodriguez revealed that he's planning a solo movie for actor Danny Trejo's Machete character. If you've seen any of the "Grindhouse" trailers, then you've seen Trejo as the machete-wielding renegade. Rodriguez's answer was surprisingly absolute. He is doing a Machete spin-off movie and it's likely going to be direct to DVD. Rodriguez seemed pretty adamant about this, hinting that the announcement is already a done deal.

Switching topics, Rodriguez was asked whether he'll ever make sequels to "Once Upon a Time in Mexico." He replied that it is not out of the question and it is still something that he wants to do. Apparently, his plan was originally to make it the first of a trilogy of movies, following Johnny Depp's blind gunman character. He even put together fake trailers for the sequels using footage from the first movie. When he showed the trailers to Depp, Rodriguez claims that he was all in.

Robert Rodriguez has been one of my favorite directors ever since from dusk till dawn, so that is very good news :O. The guy is one of the best action directors around, and it's not that gay matrix style action.

I'm sure a few of you will disagree with that last part, but fuck you.

The matrix-style action is great... when it's in the Matrix. What's annoying as fuck is that every single action movie since then has adapted the same style and they've overkilled the hell out of it. So yes, I agree.

And Robert is easily one of the best directors out there. Total self-starter, DIY kinda guy. Check out his "Rebel Without A Crew" book if you get the chance, it's a great read.

Awesome movies, ArrowX is right on the money.

Rodriguez' movie is the better of the two, the trailers were awesome, and as soon as Death Proof started, you knew it did; you could tell because of the trademark Tarantino dialogue. Kurt Russel was a badass, as was Freddy Rodriguez. Death Proof truly scared me when the girls borrowed the car and Stuntman Mike showed up. Really, the movie was all sorts of awesome, through and through. Definitely the best movie I've seen in months.

The best part though was seeing the people that didn't "get it" walk out of the theatre and complain to the management about the grainy-ness and missing reels. Laughs were had at the expense of these dumb, middle-aged, white women.

I would like to back up his argument that fat middle-aged white women are amusing theatre-goers. We get more than enough of them in Coos Bay's theatre.

Sample Quotes:

Pan's Labyrinth

War of the Worlds
"WHAT?"
"I DON'T UNDERSTAND."
"WHAT'S SHE DOING?"
"WHO'S THAT PERSON?"
"WHAT?"
(character has blood forcibly removed) "DID THEY KILL HIM?"

"I can't bah-lieve they killed the cute one."

The Illusionist
"God...."
"God...."
"God...."
"God...."

Note: It was confirmed that she and her date were indeed watching the movie. Retardation is suspected.

It didn't even go with the time period that all the other trailers were spoofing. In fact, it looked like everything else Rob has already done before. Plus he had to stick his wife in there (again) and have her performing on stage in a dress JUST like she did in House of 1000 Corpses. Fucking boring.

Eli Roth should also call it quits now because, sadly, this trailer is the best thing he's ever done in his career. The guy can't direct a decent new movie (take a look at that piece of shit "Hostel" for example), but he clearly does have talent when you see something like Thanksgiving. He really should make that into a full-length movie and then call it quits.

As for the main movies themselves, I'm not sure which I liked more and will have to watch them again, but I'm probably leaning towards Death Proof.

I read somewhere that Machete was getting his own movie or something of the sort. about 2 months back.

Roth originaly intended to make Thanksgiving, but due to his commitment to Hostel 2 and the upcoming Stephen King movie "cell" (super cellphone zombies) he said it wouldn't happen for at least the next decade. When he was approached to make a trailer he jumped at it stating "all I have to do is shoot the best parts and none of the boring stuff"

Does anyone remember the new Stephen King movie starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, 1408?

The trailer before Grindhouse started scared the shit out of me. This is gonna be a good one.

It was awesome when 8 fat middle aged people waddled out of the theater when planet terror ended saying "what a waste of money, they said it was 3 hours" Then about 20 minutes later most come back in presumably after arguing with the staff about the running time of the film, one of them grumbling about "now we have to watch another one", and about an hour in one girl asks her chubby hubby "what does this one have to do with the first part?"

Funny, but I still can't understand how this is happening so much. Are people really going in not knowing the "gimmick"? Who walks into the theater and randomly picks a movie that they know nothing about... especially now.

Anyway, I rate the concept and the total experience higher than the two movies themselves. Case of the sum being greater than the parts I guess. The trailers were great and I liked the restricted placards/cartoons (or whatever you call them). Those little touches added a lot because the movies were decent but not mind blowing. DP was uneven, but I think the problem was that the bar and diner dialogue was not up to par with the diner dialogue from Reservoir Dogs. If it had been, I don't think people would have minded as much.

Funniest moment: DP's missing reel... the whole theater groans in unison.

Newsflash - people are fucking stupid. People in groups, usually more so.
There is actually talk of splitting Grindhouse, adding the 'lost reels', and re-releasing the film as single features. The gimmick is being blamed for the poor box office. Personally, I think it has more to do with Easter weekend.

As for the films themselves, Planet Terror was perfect - a great film in the context and spirit of the project. The second half I honestly thought was the worst film I've ever watched. I came very close to walking out, and that's saying something - I'm a cheap bastard. Yeah, I get it - I get he was more or less making fun of himself and his habit heavy dialog but really, it was beyond masturbatory. I was beyond bored - he was entertaining himself and not his audience. It was akin to slamming on the breaks after a great one hour ride.

The only things I got out of this movie is that either Quentin Tarentino lost his touch with dialog or I have outgrown it and that Robert Rodriguez should only make children's movies from now on.

I mean all his movie need was that song that goes "CLICK CLICK BOOM"

I like how a movie that supposedly takes place in the Grindhouse era has SUV's in their car chases.

Well that was certainly the most retarded fun I've had in a while. My friends and I completely took over the front rows, with only five other people in the theatre.

Tarantino was pretty damned dedicated to the revenge flick formula. Unfortunately, revenge flicks like "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" were pretty damned dull. Awesome stuntwork, though.

The movies weren't supposed to represent the grindhouse era, the actual presentation of the film was not the content itself.

Yup, the style was grind house. The setting was contemporary. (Remember in DP, they crashed through a Scary Movie 4/Wolf Creek double feature movie sign.)

Which is why I enjoyed the Rob Zombie's trailer so much.

They are all both homages and contemporary takes on a wicked awesome genre.

Well, as far as humor goes, Thanksgiving all the way, but I got a real kick how "Don't" was exactly like all the schlock I saw as a kid. Especially the terrible, bloodless effects when the guy yanked out his eyes.

That's what I'm saying too. I guess I just saw more slasher movies than kinda supernatural horror movies as a kid.

Are you effen CRAZY?? Who else can make 3 hour films and have to split them or double feature them?? Point is...3 hours of MINDLESS fun and cinematic bliss! Go see your Oscar nominated flicks, which can be very good, or be freakin entertained with crazy shit for a whole afternoon for the same price!! If you want to think, go to school or work. Just my opinion.

Confirmation from the local Sam Goody: Planet Terror and Death Proof are being released separately. They're actually being released two days apart at my store on the 16th for Planet Terror and the 18th for Death Proof.

So it's good news if you're one of the folks that only liked Planet Terror.

I'm sure they will eventually, but right now I suspect they are going for profitability as the theatrical release more or less tanked. Also, I think there was a lot of demand to split the two films up.

I for one, don't want to be within 100 yard of Death Proof ever again.

The problem was that it wasn't as cheesy as Planet Terror. It was a serious movie. It wasn't Grindhouse at all. But I liked it for what it was, a kick ass car chase film. Having Kurt Russel cry towards the end was such a boneheaded move, though. I thought Stuntman Mike was supposed to be a total badass.

I thought both movies were excellent. Did you notice Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (of Shaun of the Dead fame) as zombies? I think Simon was in the phone booth.

Death Proof was good because Tarantino had a chance to make fun of himself. The believeable dialogue, the spinning-around-the-table-a-la-Reservoir-Dogs, violence juxtaposed with humor very quickly, all of his trademarks. Also, if I ever own a store, I will have a Johnny Cash picture with "Cash Only" written on it.

Death Proof wasn't that bad, it's just that (like a lot of grindhouse flicks) it too way too long to get to the point and paid off at the end with one heck of a car chase. Plus the whole movie stank of being sliced and diced: the beginning title sequence was badly edited on and possibly the first half of the movie was new footage inserted to make the whole 'Death Proof' title accurate. If anything, the real movie itself is 'Thunder Bolt' in which Stuntman Mike terrorizes three stuntwomen in a car. The DJ girls and the bar sequence was nothing but a joke to be slapped onto the beginning of the movie ala Dr. Butcher M.D.

So in a sense, the movie works, but it wasn't well thought out. Rodriegez made his movie fun. Tarantino made a Grindhouse movie without really thinking how it would play to everybody not in on the joke. And the Weinsteins forgot that the whole movie as it ran in theaters is what everybody wanted on the DVD, and that separating them takes the joke way out of context and makes it completely pointless.

That said, if I came across either steelbook of both movies for really cheap, I'd get them. But my heart is still in a mega DVD release of this fine film that was one of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had but wasn't given enough credit.
