I wouldn't think so, cuz I play Tetris DS online all the time and hardly ever play against friends. I'm always playing random Asians who often remind me that I'm not as good as I think I am. I can't imagine they'd make it a "friends-only" online system, because if they did that, yeah, I wouldn't even bother playing online.
