Ok, I'm slowly getting introduced to rockin' SNES games. I never owned one, but my friends are all "well other than evo there is nothing else to play if you don't like final fantasy." And I think that's bullshit. This other thread mentioned Soul Blade, I tried it, its exactly like Crystalis but I love that game so its awesome. The website introduced me to Deamon's Quest or whatever it was. Totally rad. Now, I need more great games. I thought that the SNES had something worth playing, but never played them. Help me be educated, I've been playing NES for 18 straight years now and its time for me to upgrade to the next generation.

EVO was a great game. My teenage aunt and I played it a lot as a kid and we kept dying at the same spot. We never realized you had to upgrade your guy by hitting select, so the shark just kept murdering us.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a really, really fun multiplayer experience. Hard, too.
The mechanics in Donkey Kong Country have always been some of my favorites, so give the first and second one a try. I heard the third one sucked, though.
Earthbound is good, but picks up slow. I couldn't imagine getting through it without a fast-forward key.

I heard Gadzooks say that in the "Games that suck" thread but it's not true. As far as gameplay goes Donkey Kong Country 3 is identical to the first two except for the inclusion of the boat you use to go from one area to the next which is actually awesome, especially once you get the cannon on it. I've never spent so much time in a game looking for secret areas.

Well I'm not retarded, I mean I've played the one's we talk about all the friggen time like metroid and zelda. But don't give me "was pretty cool" games, I want "man this is fun I can play it for hours" games.

Well, my opinions are the closest thing to the truth. If you found stupid shit like that fun, King Hadas, you should try JAWS for the NES. It doesn't help that all the levels in the game are boring re-hashes from the previous two games either. And who in their right mind wants to play as a baby? Not even a 5 year old would.
Donkey Kong Country 3 sucks and so do it's fans.

Rock n' Roll Racing strangely hasn't been mentioned yet.
I dunno, there are so many good SNES games it's kind of hard to keep track and I'm not next to my collection.
Illusion of Gaia isn't tough but it isn't very good either ;)
edit: oh and I should mention The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang since I doubt anyone else will...
I'm also a sucker for Paladin's Quest but everyone else tells me it sucks... oh well.
another edit: Oh yeah and if you are emulating, pick up a translation and rom of Treasures of the Rudras. Good shiz.
I'll think of more when I'm not at work...

Yeah, go play it and find out for yourself. I just don't like it. I have a stupid story about that game too. I got it one year for Christmas during the time it came out... I made my parents take it back.. Even though I've played it since then and still don't like it, it would have been nice to have it as part of my collection/boxed.

Mar 29th, 2007, 06:02 PM
I don't know why you dislike it so much. I went to gamefaqs to check out what most people thought and the majority gave very favorable reviews. It's a fun game and part of an unofficial trilogy :O
timrpgland
Mar 29th, 2007, 06:13 PM
It just felt very generic, hard to get specify since it's been a few years or so. I'll boot it up again sometime shortly and point out what I didn't like specifically if you really want. I gave Terranigma a chance on emulator but didn't play enough to really get into it so maybe I'd like that one. I did however play a bunch of Soul Blazer back in the day and I thought it sucked balls. :(
Oh and I'm not saying it's the worst game ever or that I HATE IT SO MUCH. Just pointing out that I don't like it since everyone else wanks all over it.

Re-hash? How far did you even play into the game, did you even get past the first area or were you so disgusted at the prospect of playing as an infant that you just couldn't stomach it any longer. Donkey Kong Country 3 is just as good as the first two in fact I'd go as far to say it's better than the first two.

Yes there was a Canyon Level, an ICE LEVEL :hypno, and oh god! A Factory Level! :eek
Donkey Kong Country 3 might be fun for the littlest of children, but for an ADULT like Supafly, it's not going to cut shit. You play the first two and it might be fun, but the lack of changes in 3 just makes it repetitive and boring to play. It's the exact same game but with a baby. BUT THE BOAT, OH GOD THE BOAT! IT'S SO FUCKING FUNNNNNN!

If you don't mind the obviously blunt grind you are about to face, the further you get, the better it feels. Plenty of options for each race you evolve into as well.
EDIT: Also, to go against my better nature of not meddling with the past, I'm going to visit Jurassic Park again and see why I kept getting my ass handed to me.
EDITAGAIN: After looking for the attroscity which scarred my dreams with electric fences and tear gas grenades in Doom-like FPS sequences, I heard that the second one actually wasn't that bad. Scores well with the SNES crowd.

I'd better recommend Supa an Snes game before I get back to arguing with Gadzooks. U.N. Squadron is an excellant shoot-em-up game that you probably haven't heard of.
Yes there was a Canyon Level, an ICE LEVEL :hypno, and oh god! A Factory Level! :eek

The Boat IS pretty awesome, not only does it add a very small level of non-linearity but it also gives you something to do outside of platfoming, finding bannana bird caves and collecting items for the Bazooka Bear brothers is fun.
As for the re-hash bit, who gives a fuck if some of the level backgrounds are similar to past games, the level designs themselves ARE original and that's what's important and I don't just mean they decided to have a barrel shooting area with yellow hornets rather then red ones. Anyone whose played Donkey Kong Country knows that the majority of the levels have some goofy function that's mostly exclusive to that level (racing up a tree that being cut down by a giant buzzsaw, riding minecarts, swimming backwards in poisionous sewage water). That's mostly why I've liked the series and DKC3 fully delivers in that department.

Really, King Hadas, quit gaying up the thread with your I HEART DONKEY KONG banter. All this should be deleted or moved to KING HADAS IS A FAG FOR KONG thread. But to answer your question:
I give a fuck! I think level design is like the 2nd important thing to any game (the first being good controls). I don't just mean how pretty it looks. I mean everything from the structure, the introduction of new elements, and a sense that it isn't a chore to go through. I don't think it's worth going through 7 levels of the same area for 1 kinda cool gimmick level (like the buzz saw).
Well it's nice you can play the same damn game for 3 straight games with barely 2% of new material as it progresses. Hell, if I could be entertained by the same shiny object all the time I would probably not complain either. If boring games do that for you, I applaud you. But to me, it's nothing but the same monkey business.

For those of us who think we have played every worthwhile Zelda title, think again! After four years of work by dozens of contributors, The Legend of Zelda™: Parallel Worlds is a massive hack of the SNES' Link to the Past. :rock It's a completely new story, new over world and dungeon maps, new items, new characters and a new interface which make this more like a full-on sequel than a simple sprite hack. The result is a brand new Zelda adventure that you can play right now! Download it now before the Nintendo® lawyers inevitably force it into the underground.:domo

It's got something of a cult following and is pretty great for a grind JRPG. My favorite part is probably how all the characters you don't choose to play as during the start of the game become NPCs who wander around between towns like you do and are friendly, neutral, or assholes, depending on their personality descriptions. Party with them! Fight them! Kill them off! Whatever you want, baby!
It's hard as shit, though. Someone who did a Let's Play of it described it as "The Battletoads of RPGs." I recommend emulating it and abusing savestates.
The ending is also an astoundingly offensive middle finger, by a game that's pretty much built around giving the player the finger.

You say all that, but you fail to mention "Looking at the fountain makes you feel better"

I am very fond of Addam's Family Values. It's an Addams Family game, that, while flawed, doesn't suck. I also quite like Brainlord. Brainlord is a HARD puzzle-based RPG. It has AWESOME music, a gladiatorial arena where you can bet or compete, and a variety of weapons. The story is about as barebones as it gets, and the graphics leave a bit to be desired, but this game warrants a look. Also, check out Lufia and Lufia 2. Wait, those were mentioned already.

I love/hate Lufia 1 and 2. Anyway, I was thinking of moving to Utah. How is it there?

Utah is hot in Summer, Cold in winter, and the people are...generally jerks. Salt Lake City has a big variety of folks though. Lots of alternative lifestyles represented. Outside of SLC, well, whitebread is the order of the day.

I've never played Gaia. I kinda want to replay some games before my Doom counter ends in January.

It's not the worst ever but isn't that good either. I own it. Has some cool ideas like paired attacks. It really tried being like Dragon Warrior but wasn't quite good enough. Even had a registration for extra party members and a build your town concept.

I really like the concept of paired attacks. Its what sold me on the Suikoden franchise.

Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. Lenor figures Illusion of Gaia is too hard and it sucks, so you'll enjoy it.
