View Full Version : Menu foods probably killed my cat

So, here's what I know. My cat ate food that was on the recall list in January.
She'd been healthy, she was only nine years old, she got really sick very suddenly and died.
I'll never know if she was poisoned, because while the vet could tell me for only $400.00 dollars that she was very anemic and had a slightly enlarged liver, a diagnosis of why those things were happening would run me into potentially thousands of dollars and would only tell me why dhe was dying, not cure her.
It's not like I'm looking to sue anyone, though I'd like my $400.00 back. It's just that she was a great cat, and she may well have had a lot of years left to live, and it sucks. And I'd like the whole truth to come out, so that if this was a case of negligence instead of just a tragedy (and I think it is a tragedy, as we are now talking about potentially thousands of pets) regulations or enforcement can be tightened to avoid stuff like this happening again.
The numbers are not going to be known. Most pet owners could not afford any more than I could to find out what killed their pets, and at the time it happened had no real reason to look into it.
It's just sad, and it makes me angry.

Definitely something that people SHOULD be compensated for in some way, but like ya said, everything costs money so you'd have to pay just to get paid back :(

I'm very sorry to hear about your cat Max. I know what its like to lose a pet, my dog Bunnie died very suddenly last year, and we had only had him for 9 months.
I'm sure that she had a very good life with you and your family, and I hope that they can find out what happened to the damn pet food and prevent it from ever happening again.

I've actually had two dogs die within the last few weeks but they were both very old (like really old, my lab was 12 and our keeshond mix was almost 15) so I don't know if the food thing would really even be a factor
so what i'm saying is pets dying sure does suck max you're right

My buddys dad is gonna start up a class action lawsuit and get a whole bunch of names from ppl whos cats have died, he was spurred when all 4 of his cats died in the same span of 43 hours.

You could upgrade to a kitten. They lose their value faster than a car though.

It sucks that your cat died, Max. I think it's eventually going to end up being that this was just an accident rather than anything criminal or negligent. And even if there was negligence involved, it likely occurred in the country where the grain was imported from and there probably isn't a whole lot that will amount from it.
Rather than organizing a class action lawsuit against the pet food manufacturer (getting some money back will make up for your dead pets am I right????), people should be questioning the companies behind the brand names as to why all those dozens of brands are essentially the same product.
Not to mention the fact that everyone in the lawsuit would have to prove that their cat died from poisoning, which as Max already stated, is pretty expensive.

Yeah, I agree with you totally. I don't feel the need to be compensated for my pain over an accident, and I don't think it would compensate anyway (although I would enjoy the boozeing)
I also really agree with you about the same product aspect. I fed the cat Iams which is supposed to be a health concious brand, and it cost more than a lot of the other brands on the list because of that fact. I don't know at this point though, if the total contents of the can was the same as all the other brands, or they just bought glutten from the same manufacturer.
But in the end, it's just a sad accident, same as if she'd been hit by a car or any other way she might have died barring old age. It bothers me more, but not in a rational way.

i'm so sorry, max. i have a cat and probably due to my enormous medical expenses i tend to cut back on name brand things and this includes cat food, litter and tons of items. i think now it's the only reason this cat is alive is because of my weakend budget. louie just broke his tail over the weekend and as i look over at him on the couch, with his awkward tail, i just simply can't imagine my life without him. my heart just pours out for you. as a rule poverty sucks, but i think that, in this case, it worked out for me. i just hate to see ANY animal suffer simply from our very best intentions and as such, i do believe that there could be some form of restitution or compensation for your loss.
god bless, max

You're only saying that because you're poor and would trade a bucket of cash for your kitty.

Hey, sorry about your cat. I've been keeping a close eye on mine (she's only about three), but luckily, no signs of sickness yet. All she's in danger of is getting throttled the next time she sits on my face at 3AM and just about suffocates me.
The manufacturer should be held responsible in some way, but I don't feel that individual compensation for each pet owner is really possible. Like you said, it costs thousands of dollars to even determine if that's the true cause, not to mention a bunch of people would jump on the bandwagon wanting freebies. What a great country we live in.
Also, is this pet food recall worldwide, or does it only apply to the US?
